•>Sanjivani 2’s Dr Vardhan will be a landmark character in my 25 year old TV career: Rohit Roy

Talented and good looking actor Rohit Roy is on seventh heaven with the early reactions to his greyish Dr Vardhan character in the much-awaited Star Plus show Sanjivani 2 (Alchemy Films). There was a preview of the first episode a couple of days ago where iwmbuzz.com was also invited. Read our review here.

“It has been superb. I have got lots of love and praise for my efforts. Even lead actor Surbhi Chandna messaged me, calling Vardhan as her favourite Sanjivani 2 character. Having said that, I am keeping my cool and waiting for the main telecast from 12th August, and hoping that the janta shows me the same love.”

Talking about Vardhan’s ideology, he says, “The man is crystal clear and ruthlessly sees the hospital only as a place of commerce.”

“Unfortunately, that is how the medical profession has become these days. Have we not seen doctors prescribe unnecessary tests and medicines? Vardhan will not do that, but yes, he ensures that any operation/treatment is paid for. There are no free lunches given.”

“It is on this very subject that he has lots of debate with Head of Surgery, Dr Shashank (Mohnish Behl), whom he respects as a doctor. Yet he feels that had he devoted those pro bono hours to cash services, the hospital would have benefited much more.”

“Vardhan is very arrogant and sure of himself, but yes, he will not get into useless arguments with anyone,” added he.

“The character graph was good when Siddhu (producer Siddharth P Malhotra) first approached me for the same. I just hopped on. I have always played the sweet lover boy or someone who has come from Oxford and nothing like this. Also, in my personal life, I am very chilled out; so to essay someone with a big chip on his shoulder is interesting.”

Rohit further felt glad about the concept of sequels catching on in India. “Till now, shows would run for a few years at a stretch, then got over. But we have the opportunity to revisit old classics and take it a notch higher. Siddhu has really worked on the shooting, sets and medical expertise as compared to Sanjivani 1. Even now, I get calls for a sequel to Swabhimaan (Doordarshan), which had released a quarter of a century ago. I regard Rishabh Malhotra as my best TV work till date. Vardhan will be another landmark on the same page.”

In closing, Rohit says, “This time around, unlike the original Sanjivani, we will stick more to the medical action rather than just the personal lives of the doctors. Siddhu’s clear peg was lives vs. moolah.”

•> IWMBuzz Exclusive Interview with Sayantani Ghosh

~Sanjivani might change the face of desi telly- Sayantani Ghosh

Image

Dependable TV hand Sayantani Ghosh is hoping that her latest Star Plus medical drama, Sanjivani, will change the face of Indian TV. “You only need one big property to replace existing templates. E.g. Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasautii Zindagii Kay heralded the K series era.”

“What gives us the edge is that our costumes, like season 1, are very functional (the hospital backdrop). This is a far cry from loud, over the top stuff currently ruling the roost on desi tube, where the emphasis is only on looking good.”

“Same goes with the script, which has certain sensibilities and flavour, given that we are dealing with serious professionals like surgeons and doctors.”

“Last but not the least, the shot-taking is very normal and relatable. All the above elements put a spring in our step when we shoot.”

Here, Sayantani, who has been around TV for over 14 years, does some straight talking. “Even the audiences need to start accepting content beyond the tried and tested, which sadly is not happening. E.g., the fate of our recent different take on the Mahabharata, Karn Sangini. Once numbers don’t come, sooner or later, shows have to go off as it begins to affect the bottom line.”

“Although my other offbeat show Naamkarann rated well, yet it did not become a chartbuster.”

“TRP is a different creature, for it seems to be more North region heavy. Bengal and Mumbai don’t seem to matter on BARC or TAM (before). The audiences there seem to lap up more digital content; no wonder, Netflix is big.” Sayantani’s other bigger known shows have been Kumkum – Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan, Naaginn, Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyaar, Mahabharat, etc.

“Having said that, we have got a very positive reaction to the first episode preview of Sanjivani and this was expected, as we are returning with a cult franchise, boasting of big names (Rohit Roy and Gurdeep Kohli).”

Talking about her character, she says, “Dr Anjali is a layered woman, going beyond the currently known father (Mohnish Behl)-daughter friction track. All characters have a lot to do. Kudos to our producer, Siddharth P Malhotra, for retaining the flavour of the past, yet making the show very today.”

In closing, when asked about the main female lead, Sayantani says, “Although Surbhi Chandna has come on the back of the huge hit show, Ishqbaaaz, yet she does not have any airs. Even now she is hungry for more good and is a very much a team player who we love.”
