Chopras WOULD do that - in the 90's the press wrote a lot about their lame attempts at shortchanging Madhuri. And it's not about "suiting the role more", but the contrast between what's down to earth and available and what is from a different world, so to speak - an unattainable, indescribable (nice way of justifying the deficiencies of the script) ideal woman. The dance-off only emphasizes how desperate Karishma's character is, but even though "some viewers" - understandably - rooted for the underdog, Rahul would have never fallen for the girl. Needless to add, Madhuri showed stunning non-classical moves in many films, so the idea that the dance-off somehow proves Karishma is a better dancer is ridiculous.
Of course suiting the role is important as half the battle is won. Karishma suited her role perfectly and hence got awards and public acclaim.
DTPH s remembered most for its songs+ contemporary dance and Rahul's dialogues + Nisha's breakdown.
Madhuri is good on classical dance like that in Devdas. Karishma is good in western dance forms.
I disagree that Chopra's would do that. Karishma wasn't that big heroine for them to bother & it was a supporting role.
Madhuri has better films to her credit Beta, HAHK, Devdas.
Madhuri stole the limelight in Devdas from Aish & Karishma stole from Madhuri in DTPH.
It all depends all public reacts to the performance as. Despite playing envy Karishma won audience hearts. Credit that to her efforts.
