Bharat starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif is the big Eid 2019 release

Movie Name:Bharat

Cast:Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif

Director:Ali Abbas Zafar

Why do people go to see a Salman Khan film? You will not find the answer to that question in the reviews of his films. You will find the answer to that question in a single screen theatre, on Eid morning, as boy after boy hoots, cheers and screams his lungs out for this one man. Upar Allah, neeche dharti, beech mein tera junoon. It is that junoon that makes a Salman fan get out of her or his home on Eid day and watch their superstar on the big screen. One more time. Year after year.

And Salman Khan, true to his self and this love, delivers. In Bharat, Khan laughs, cries, dances, sings, fights, loves... and gives his fans just the perfect Eidi after 2018's disaster Race 3.

In 2019, Salman Khan is Bharat. A 70-something man who is celebrating his 70-something birthday. 60 ke baad 70 ya 75, kya fark padta hai! Our hero is in his special suit, has his Madam-Sir by his side. She calls him 'Sexy', he blushes. His family takes off to the Wagah-Attari border to cut his cake. This 'sathiya-gaya-hua buddha' wants to cut the cake as the train from Pakistan crosses into India.

On August 15, 1947, when Bharat stepped into the newly-formed Hindustan from Mirpur, Pakistan, on board a train full of refugees, he decided to make it his birthday. Bharat the film and the man are both driven by a strong story of separation. And director Ali Abbas Zafar makes complete use of the Partition as a subject to bring tears to your eyes. Special mention to guest star Tabu here. In her one scene, she makes you break down. Salman, on his part, has to do a lot of weeping to get you to shed a tear for him.

As his family members gather around him, waiting for the train that is four hours late, Bharat tells his story. We learn of his promise to his Bauji (Jackie Shroff in a memorable role). Through the years since 1947, that is the albatross around Bharat's neck. That is both his burden and his hope. Ummeed. Hope. The one thing that keeps people alive.

Through the eyes of Bharat, we see the journey of Bharat, our country, through some of its best and worst phases. Director Ali Abbas Zafar manages to capture in 2 hours and 47 minutes the ups and downs that this man and his country wade across. The best part of Bharat the film is that it has something for everyone. It is the quintessential Big Salman Khan Film with all its trappings. Romance, comedy (and a lot of it, thanks to Sunil Grover), drama, action, emotion.

Salman plays to the gallery in every frame from beginning to end. He, off screen as on it, makes no bones about what he promises. He makes films so people go in and feel happy. With Bharat, Salman Khan gifts his fans the perfect Eidi. Whenever life gets tough, you should have some sweets, Bharat's father tells him. Salman Khan the superstar too, seems to have imbibed that lesson before signing Bharat. His last two Eid releases were damp squibs. In 2017's Tubelight, people could not accept him as a simpleton. In Race 3, people could not accept anything. With Bharat, Salman corrects his mistakes. Ali Abbas Zafar, credited with writing, story and direction, does not let Salman down. But the film tries to pack in so much that you start fidgeting after a point.

Salman Khan tries his best to play his various avatars. At 20, he brings the circus and its Maut Ka Kuwa to you. At 30, he is in the Middle East, rescuing people from near-certain death and romancing his Madam-Sir. He is then winning over Somali sea pirates with Amitabh Bachchan songs when not dancing in Punjabi in the streets of Malta. And he is also sitting in front of a television set and breaking down. If with Sultan, Ali Abbas Zafar put Salman through a rigorous physical test, in Bharat it is a test for Salman's expressions. Khan doesn't disappoint. Not his fans, any way.

Katrina Kaif gets the meatiest role of her Salman-Khan-film-career. That crown of perm in place, Katrina's hard work is visible in Bharat. As the strongheaded and strong-willed Kumud/Madam-Sir, Katrina sinks her teeth into her role. But the star of this show is Sunil Grover. The Vilayti to Bharteya, Grover brings his impeccable comic timing to Bharat, making the film palatable. You will take some time to digest Sonali Kulkarni in the role of Salman Khan's mother. Disha Patani doesn't really get a role to write home about.

Bharat has its own share of problems, beginning with the near-three-hour runtime. But when people wait a year for a Salman Khan Eid release, can you really blame the superstar for giving his fans their larger-than-life hero in an out-and-out entertainer, replete with song and dance?

Don't go looking for logic in a Salman Khan film. Upar Allah, neeche dharti, beech mein... tera junoon.

Bharat movie review: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif deliver an Eid entertainer

Bharat movie review: This Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif Eid release is epic in its scale - starting from Partition, touching on Pandit Nehru’s era, it fast forwards us to 2010 with Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Manmohan Singh as reference points. Rating: 3/5.

Bharat movie review: Salman Khan is at his best when Katrina Kaif is in the frame.

Bharat
Director - Ali Abbas Zafar
Cast - Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Jackie Shroff, Disha Patani, Sunil Grover
Rating - 3/5

Salman Khan has often explained the rejection of his earlier Eid release, Tubelight, as thus -- the film came out on a festival and people expected to be entertained; instead they left the theatre crying, and the film flopped. As much as a Salman Khan film can flop. That is why Bharat -- despite finding its origins in the heart-wrenching Partition of India, and being linked to it till its climax -- is primarily an entertainer. Some jokes land lightly and dance around you; others hit you in the small of your back with all the subtlety of an express train -- but they are aplenty.

Watch the Bharat trailer here.

Bharat -- Salman and director Ali Abbas Zafar tell you from the very first scene -- will make you cry. But it will also give you action, romance, drama and definitely, comedy. Ergo, an Eid blockbuster – ask Salman’s fans. Bharat seems to be designed for them. In case you were expecting Salman and Ali to give you a reprisal of that brutally honest scene from Sultan in which the actor – shown overweight and past his prime – faced his reality and teared up, Bharat is not that film. Instead, as a bearded sexagenarian here, he beats up a group of much younger men without breaking a sweat. Bhai:1 - brutal honesty:0.

Katrina Kaif plays Kumud in the film, ‘Madam Sir’ to Salman Khan’s Bharat.

Bharat begins with a train full of corpses entering a sleepy station somewhere in Pakistan. Caught in the middle of post-Partition riots, Salman’s character - Bharat - gets separated from his father (Jackie Shroff) and sister. He spends the rest of the film, spread across 60 years, honouring his promise to his father – to keep their family together. Earnest and sure-footed, these are some of the best scenes of the film, and you can’t help but tear up.

As Bharat’s story runs parallel to that of independent India’s, momentous events in history get referenced -- Nehru’s death, Amitabh Bachchan’s rise, India winning its first cricket World Cup, Sachin Tendulkar and Shah Rukh Khan emerging as superstars the nation looked up to. Even India’s liberalisation and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh get a postscript.

Salman Khan’s journey runs parallel to that of India in Bharat.

To take care of his mother (Sonali Kulkarni) and two siblings, Bharat becomes a circus artiste, ably supported by his childhood friend Vilayati (Sunil Grover). Bharat’s first girlfriend, Radha (Disha Patani), is there perhaps only for the Slow Motion song. Once she matches steps with a de-aged Salman, her track is unceremoniously discarded.

This is perhaps Bharat’s single biggest failing. Other than Salman, Katrina and perhaps Sunil, everyone gets half-baked roles and are expected to sleep-walk through the film. Actors as talented as Tabu, Sonali and Kumud Mishra are on the periphery with nothing much to do.

The film is at its most agile when its two leads are together. Salman as a coy Bharat and Katrina Kaif as the plain spoken Kumud -- she of the foxy curls and Parveen Babi swag. The actor is feisty and charming and Salman is also at his best when he’s with her -- whether as a young couple flirting on oil fields somewhere in the Middle East, or as an elderly couple looking back on a life well lived. In a refreshing moment, she even tells Bharat, “Tum thode self-obessed nahi ho?” Another zinger from her is “You are a human being, don’t try to play God.” It is hard not to cheer for Kumud.

Disha Patani’s track in Bharat is limited to Slow Motion Mei.

A lot like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Salman emerges as an advocate for peace between India and Pakistan. A long drawn out sequence underlines how both the countries lost their own identities during the Partition, and how wounds are far from healed may feel manipulative, but it works – I witnessed more than one person wiping away a tear.

That is where Bharat and Zafar score. Despite knowing what the film is trying to do, in some cases easily guessing plot turns in advance, you cannot help but enjoy it. This one is an Eid winner. Bhai just got his mojo back.

I try to avoid Salman Khan’s movies. I don’t remember the last movie of his I watched. I haven’t even watched Bajrangi Bhaijaan (which is supposedly good).

Having said that, is this movie worth it? Should I watch it? 😆

Bharat is an average film that works in patches .There are several highs but several lows too.The basic story has been divided into several segments with first two segments registering the maximum impact .The main conflict is established in the first 15 minutes itself and not much happens there after .The pacing is really slow with several scenes testing your patience especially the entire part in Middle East is a slog .The pre climax somewhat salvges the show when a lost character reappears with emotions working rather well.Salman is decent here ditto for Katrina .Strictly one time watch..
