Katrina Kaif: I don’t view my songs as item numbers because dance is an art form, it’s an expression

Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif has her dancing game on point along with her acting. She is famous for performing on dance songs like Sheila Ki Jawaani, Chikni Chameli, Kamli, Zara Zara Touch Me and Kala Chashma. Fans went crazy after the release of these songs. However, for the last few years, there has been a conception in the industry that these ‘item numbers' objectify women. On Arbaaz Khan's talk show Pinch, he asked Katrina Kaif to throw her views on the statement ‘everytime an actress does an item number, we set women back a decade.’

Katrina said, “Actually, I am really glad that you asked that. I have a slightly different viewpoint on this, being someone for whom dance is a big part of life. I don’t view my songs as item numbers. They are not. Because dance is an art form, it’s an expression.” She further added, “In this world of social commentary that now everyone has a platform to say anything, sometimes we don’t stop and question what is being said. We don’t stop and analyse whether there is any truth to it. In some of these waves that became popular in the media, we see women dancing in films as them being objectified. If you, as a woman, or the actress feels for one second that you are being objectified in the song, you should not be doing it."

On the professional front, Katrina's last two films 'Thugs of Hindostan' and 'Zero' didn't work well on the box office, despite the mega star cast in both the movies. However, the actress is all set for her next release 'Bharat' alongside Salman Khan. Helmed by Ali Abbas Zafar, the film scheduled to hit the theatres on June 5. It also features Disha Patani, Jackie Shroff, Sunil Grover and Tabu in vital roles.

First off, I want to add Pinkvilla is trolling with the line about her having her dance game on point along with her acting. 😆

No issue with dancing Kattiko leken your dancing is always same to same so what can you say that makes what you've done an art or any type of expression?

To comment on the songs whether they are item numbers or not is just silly. Clearly, I am sure she is smart enough to understand what the portrayal of them are and, that she has been indeed used as a prop in a majority of the songs she dances in.

Just because you are having fun and getting paid crores doesn't give it less credit to whether it's objectifying or not.

This is a problem. These actresses of course won't say they feel like a piece of meat because they are secured and protected way better than the average citizen. These actresses do not have to ride the metro after work and watch what they wear because men pry on them and follow them. *yeah people stalk and what not to celebs but it's easier for them to be safer*

And maybe these actresses do not see the issue but, there are men who are very stupid, who think because they watch these films with suggestive dances, that any woman who dances like this or anything wants to be seen as an object too. It's hard when people don't understand reel life doesn't translate to real life.

Another stupid woman who pretends to be blind. I remember kriti sanon also said something like that.
