Did Ranveer deliberately underplay?

Watched Gullyboy again and noticed something. It seemed to me that Ranveer was underplaying his character deliberately at times. Kudos to him, especially as he is labelled as an OTT actor at times.
Lots of people said even during the screening that Siddhanth Chaturvedi overshadowed him.And for all those people who is saying he overshadowed Ranveer, yes that was the point. and credit partially goes to Ranveer too for not being like other Bollywood heroes and for being secure & true to his character. It is not about one-upmanship if the roles were reversed Ranveer can still pull off Sher.

Imagine Ranveer as Khilji and now as Murad. He knows when to use his presence and hide his presence.

Even Rajeev masand says Ranveer resisted the temptation to give a heroic swag to his character.

Thoughts????

He was honest. He neither underplayed murad nor overplayed khilji or his other characters. He just bought them to life n got them their distinct identities n given their stories n journeys a meaning. He was phenomenal as Murad. The nuances he displayed were... inspirational to be honest. his lopsided smile while flirting with Safina or his grim expression during his family situations everything..everything was well thought out by him n executed. He us definitely one of the finest actors we have currently. Hope he keeps taking risks n improves further.

I wonder why such shitty posts are being made! Noone overshadowed anyone. Read the reviews first and then lament over instead of making up lame stuff just to grab attention.

He played it just right! I don't know what you mean by underplaying, but if he did that, then he wasn't being honest to his character...
And no, with all due respect to Sidhaant's stellar performance, Ranveer didn't get overshadowed by him...Despite the camera focus not being on him in a lot of scenes, he still stood out..The Director intended for him to be noticed even in the crowd and I think she is able to deliver her vision...

Because Murad is not your cinematic larger than life heroic character but he is one amongst us..He is me, he is you, he could be anybody in that crowd! And I thought Ranveer played it absolutely convincingly...

The first time he does something on his own is when he bunks the office and chooses to go the competition instead...It was a long way for him to reach that point! Until then it was either his dad, his friends or his Girl friend etc who were making decisions for him...And how convincingly he takes us through that journey?!

I agree with the reviewer who called Ranveer's performance the crowning glory, the soul, the core of an ensemble of Brilliant performances!

I am stating my own opinion and what I heard when I watched the movie. Please refrain from personal attacks like some immature wannabe. Geez. talk about over-reacting.

I meant that he was refraining from making the character larger-than-life.

I agree with your post. Thanks for explaining.

Oh wow...What is wrong with the post that you had to be so rude? We have to be actually glad that someone finally made a thread on someone's performance in a movie, rather than the usual bashing threads...This is a great topic and lot of potential for discussion and healthy debate!👏

Well, I was just asking whether Ranveer deliberately changed his technique to make the character more earthy and appealing.

Sort of the opposite of what Hrithik and Kareena did in MPKDH...they both overacted to make the charachters larger-than-life

its not a shitty post, mintyblue is just making an observation about ranveer's performance and asking us to share our views, she didnt say anything negative about his performance, she is praising him that he didn't overplay the character to get all the attention

you can agree or disagree with wat she said but there is no need to be rude about it
