Is there a typo here?! .. Sorry couldn't get what you're trying to say! ... Sonia Gandhi was to be the PM but she was held back becoz of some opposition? ... Also Manmohan singh may have been the puppet .. but I think he went out of that zone and did certain things his own way ... No? ... sorry I am not very well aware of the decade when MMS was the PM! ..
Congress coalition won more seats that election and it was widely expected she will be the next PM. "First Italian to become PM of India " was the headlines in many foreign newspapers ( I heard many westerners were later disappointed)
In a country of over a billion and a grand old party like congress which fought against British Raj, chose her
Some people were in shock that it could come to this... But most I felt were indifferent or even supportive...
She was about to be nominated for the post, then came some last minute opposition from some of her party members bcz of her foreign origin
But there was no hurdle in her becoming PM, the constitution allowed it and most of her party was behind her
Still she declined the post and saved us... Why, what transpired behind the scenes is not clear, my memory is a little hazy and details were murky even then.
The narration they sold to the press and public was that she was following her heart and doing what's best for the country. She was hailed as a hero at that time
Maybe it's partly true... She might not be a Mother Teresa, Annie Besant or a Ida S. Scudder
(she didn't even became Indian citizen until 1982, only after Rajiv became MP and only after a petition was filed in court asking that all "foreigners" be removed from the prime minister's home)
But she he did create history by declining the post :-)
