That is very.sweet of you, my dear. It is really flattering to know that you loved those old posts, and still remember them. Thank you!

Also that you like what little I have been able to do here. I am struggling with rheumatoid arthritis since the last three years plus, which makes it very difficult to do extensive posts of the kind I used to do earlier, but I will try my best

I used to love reading your insights then and I'm thrilled to see you doing the same here now. 😳

Oh Wow Shyamala Aunty! 😲 How awesome to see you here!! Was totally in love with all your posts in the JA forum. Looking forward to seeing as much commentary from you as possible 😊

Also, I'm glad somebody here resonates with my thoughts about the male lead as well -dying duck indeed! 😆; apologies to all his fans; but he really needs to improve by leaps and bounds to match Tejasswi's expressions and body language. He has screen presence and good looks though..(Peace offering);

I felt that the actor portraying Arjun is doing really well, something pleasant about him - could be because he has been a child actor, more experience maybe - I mean if you just observed the way in which the two male leads handled their bow and arrow scenes; that would in itself give you a great comparison - with Karn being too stiff, poor neck and body posture, seems to be having just one expression for any scene...oh dear I will stop now; don't want to be thrown out of the forum 🤢

Sigh! if only someone like Rajat Tokas had been given Karn ..

On the other hand; really loving Tejaswi's portrayal - have never seen her previous work - but she captivates from Scene 1! Gorgeous to look at, expressive mobile face and eyes, has got the natural regal body language absolutely spot on, anybody would fall in love with her at first sight - 👏

Looking forward to the serial and Shyamala Aunty's posts...Cheers!!

Yes, it reminded me of the scene from the film Jodhaa Akbar, where Jodhaa secretly watches Jalal"s sculpted, sinewy perfection as he is doing his sword fighting practice.

More than that, I was struck by Uruvi's unnecessary arrogance when she expresses surprise at Karn not knowing her name, as "humein sab jaante hain!". And again when she accuses him of not having the right to damage the jewel, which is nonsense.

It is an instinctively defensive reaction. She senses the attraction subconciously, and is fighting it. Otherwise, it would be uncharacteristic of the normally pleasant Uruvi to be so abrupt and aggressive.

Dear Fairy,

This may sound like quibbling, and it doesn't really affect the merits of the excellent analysis, but it is worth noting.

The gemstone was not supposed to be indestructible by just anybody. If my memory doesn't fail me, it was supposed to be indestructible even by the pancha bhutas, ie by fire, water, air, earth, or the ether. That is to say, by anything terrestrial, for there would be no earthly object that was independent of these five primal elements.

So, since Karna has been able to damage the gemstone, it means that he is superior to the pancha bhutas. That is to say , he is not just "not anybody", but he is clearly someone more than extraordinary, in fact unique.

No wonder that Uruvi is plainly besotted with him!

But I wish they would avoid Karan Johar style cliches like the kumkum from Uruvi's thali falling all over Karna, and her staring at him for a long moment and then dropping the thali, in the standard manner, with a loud clang. 😉 Also that Karna would not stare back at her looking for all the world like a dying duck (with profound apologies to his admirers here 😉)

Yes, this is an excellent point! I think Uruvi has been mildly besotted from the minute she laid her eyes on him. I understand her growing crush...she has never quite met a man like him! That said, before he damaged the gemstone, she was only somewhat dazzled by him, quite literally...remember the sparkling earrings! 😆 But after he damaged the jewel, she began to realize how extraordinary he must be!
This trope reminds me of the famous line from Lolita, "It was love at first sight, at last sight, at ever and ever sight."

I agree about the thaali dropping situation that is to come! 😆 Indian shows simply cannot stop being filmy and dramatic! About Karna...I am probably one of the few members here who has actually seen Aashim act before. His strength lies in boy-next-door characters, he is quite charming in them! I do feel that he is struggling with an overwhelming character like Karna! I genuinely like the characterization of Karna in this show but Aashim is taking this stoicism a touch too far! It's only been a week or so...hence, I am hoping he'd do better as he gets more into the character. I do remember that Aham was quite criticized for his portrayal initially but he turned the situation around very fast...he is pretty much the face of Karna for most people today.

Edit: Saw the post above...while I completely agree with the observation re. Aashim's difficulty with this character...I have to categorically disagree about Tokas.

My dear Jenny,

How wonderful to come upon you here, out of the blue, after 5 years plus!🤗 I am no end pleased. I remember that once I wrote an ultra long explanation for some points you had wanted cleared in one of my Jodha Akbar posts, though I can no longer pin down what it was about. I am getting older, my dear, I am 70 now, and I think the medication for my rheumatoid arthritis is affecting my memory.

Thank you for saying such very kind things about my posts. I can no longer do that kind of extensive writing, thanks to my RA, but I shall try my best, now that I know you, and some of my other young friends from the old days are here with me. You can have no idea how much that peps me up, and Heaven knows I need pepping up these days. Constant pain has a way of wearing one down.

This said, do take a look at my detailed response to Gargi (Carmilla)"s thread on Episode 1. My take on Arjun will amuse you, and perhaps some other parts as well.

I agree with you about Uruvi, with a few minor reservations. I had never seen her before, or the other two either, but then I do not watch much TV. She is really very beautiful and peppy.

As for this Karna, I agree with you completely, and I had my own candidate for the role. But now we are stuck with this one, and we can only hope that he gets better with time. Otherwise, his being the central role, it will be difficult for us. Fairy has explained the most likely reasons for his being so stiff, and I feel sorry for the poor chap.

I am very fond of Rajat, my dear, as you know, but he would not do for Karna. This role needs a kind of melancholic, subdued, tragic aura, of someone whose fate is always at his elbow, ready to cripple him, like the Betaal in the old tales, and Rajat is too full of life and overtly dominating. But he would have given it a good try.

See you again soon!

Dear Fairy,

You are really something else again! I was struck by your digging up that Nabokov quote, which is such a perfect fit for this situation. I have added it to my list of Memorable Quotations. I never read Lolita - and I do not regret that - but Nabokov was a great writer, and no wonder this line sounds so good. Who says it, Humbert Humbert?

There was a sort of Indian version that preserved the core of Lolita, of a much older man falling in love with his daughter's friend. It was Nishabd, and Amitabh Bachchan did very well in the lead role, but the film crashed, as the audience could not accept the character at all, especially when played by one of their beloved stars, even though the relationship was quite sanitised.

I am glad you share my exasperation at the thali dropping scene. I am afraid this is going to be the precursor of more such cliches, including the RK Films logo stunt. I always used to wonder what the actors were thinking when such shots were being canned.

He: Oh Lord, I had no idea she weighed so much!

She: I hope the chap does not let me fall! My spine is going to crack, and I am expected to gaze lovingly into his eyes?😡

And as for this spraying of the kumkum into the air, I doubt if the director has any idea of what would happen if Karna got some of it in his eyes. He would not be able to act for a week at least.

I am also pleased that you agree with my take on the gemstone being damaged by Karna, and its impact on Uruvi.

Your explanation about the reason for Aashim's stiffness and the excessive stoicism is convincing. I don't watch much TV, and I had not seen any of our three leads earlier. I very much hope he loosens up as the show proceeds. I am too old to gush over a handsome young man, but I would at least like to find his portrayal a pleasant watch.

If you have the time and the inclination, do take a look at my detailed response on Gargi (Carmilla)"s thread on Episode ! My take on Arjun will amuse you, and perhaps some other parts as well, especially the one on the Arjun-Uruvi relationship, which is not the standard one held here.

This scene reminded me more of one of the initial scenes of Diya Aur Baati Hum, in which Suraj bathes in a towel and Sandhya goes to fetch water as it gets over. Both are very similar.

I have followed Aashim from beginning. His stiffness here seems due to that kavach stuck to his body. His movements are restricted by it, especially in fighting scenes lest it should break. Otherwise this Karna is fine, especially around Urvi - his kavach has no issues at all.😆
