😆
The irony! She whitewashed a casteist sex trafficker who tried to kill children and tried to sell his own wives and sons to achieve glory. She got Star Plus to make a show glorifying the criminal. Read Kavita Kane on Twitter.

Don't we have role models in this country that we get to have a biopic on #Sanju baba? Next Sallu and his sob story #justasking

For me there is only one Hero of Mahabharata which is Karna.
All the rest of the characters are grey for me.
Only character I dislike is Kunti...she is the most heartless mother who valued her honor over her child's...I can never forget how she disclosed Karnas birth secret only to karna just before war so that she can distract him and make him weak..she asked him to not harm any of her 5 pandavas during the war and also took promise from karna to not use any of the divine astras more than once in the war...She has to be the most partial mother I have ever heard of.

As I mentioned earlier every character of Mahabharata is grey..there is no full white character including Krishna..Karna has so many admirable qualities hence he stands out for me and also the way he was always wronged all his life evokes sympathy in everyone...I don't find any praiseworthy qualities in Arjuna other than he was a great Archer which many are,be it Karna,Parashuram,Bhishma or Dronacharya and Duryodhana and Bhim were so good in their respective field which is gada yudh where these both were unbeatable..Other than being great warriors, what admirable qualities do the Pandavas possess,i haven't heard of anything except for Yudhishtara being a honest man for which I respect him.
Karna sold his wife??what is the source of your info..as far as I know in the original Mahabharata there is no mention of Karnas wife let alone him selling them.
It will be better if don't get into a talk about Pandavas treatment of woman..shame on Kunti for asking the brothers to share panchali so that the unity between them will always be intact..shame on Arjun for not taking a stand for his wife when his mom ordered him to share her with his brothers...shame on Pandavas to sell panchali for a game and not battling an eye when she was getting stripped in public,Shame on Kunti for offering Panchali to karna in order to make him change sides..and the list goes on.

@Ardhanariswara

First off, I'm not a Pandava fan. For the record, I loathe a number of the so-called protags, including Yudhishtira and Bheeshma and Drona. I actually don't dislike Suyodhana all that much. If anything, I'm a fan of the author Vyasa (as opposed to the character Vyasa) and the plot itself.

Secondly, if you're already aware of the following, I apologize.

I can give you citations from KMG translation which is freely available online. The Critical Editon, which is the one with the least number of interpolations, is also available online, but only in Sanskrit. The Debroy translation costs a lot, but over the years, I have managed to get all the volumes.

I can give you citations from KMG (which you will be able to verify) on:

1. How Kunti was raped
2. How she went to Surya to ask what to do about the child.
3. How Surya told her to throw it away; he didn't care.
4. How she sent spies after the child to make sure he was safe.
5. How Karna was adopted by the ROYAL couple of Anga. Yes, Athirath and wife were royals and Dhrithrashtra's friends.
6. How, after the fall of Anga to either Jarasandh or Pandu, Athirath and family went to live in Hastinapur.
7. (Extrapolation) Kunti probably agreed to marry Pandu because Karna was in Hastinapur
8. How Karna joined Suyodhan in attacking the child Pandavas. Reminder: Karna had to be in his late teens or twenties when he helped Suyodhan poison another child.
9. How Karna was educated by Drona
10. How Karna went to Drona and coolly asked for Brahmashirastra to KILL Arjuna. Yes, kill a prince of the realm.
11. How Drona, instead of marching Karna to the court, lets him off by merely refusing.
12. How when Karna went to Parasu Rama, he was already almost completely educated by Drona except for Brahmashira.
13. How years later, in the swayamvara of the Panchal princess, Karna's name is only mentioned as a baraati, not an invitee.
14. How Karna either didn't participate or FAILED (acc to South Indian versions, he failed).
15. How Panchali's infamous rejection appears only in 4 out of 1400+ manuscripts even just in the northern versions.
16. How the Critical Edition clearly states it as a later interpolation.
17. How Karna was a part of the group that tried to burn Panchali to death
18. How Karna wanted to immediately attack the Pandavas. At that point, they'd done nothing to Karna except be alive.
19. How Karna was part and parcel of the dice hall planning.
20. How Karna was the one who told Dusshassan to sexually assault Panchali.
21. How Karna was the one who asked Dusshassan to take Panchali to the house for female slaves (sex slaves. You only have to read Yuyutsu chapter to figure this out. Also, see #22).
22. How Karna asked Panchali to choose one man to sleep with from the men there.
23. How when Suyodhan had a bit of regret, Karna was the one who inflamed the anger.
24. How Panchali called Karna and the rest small men.
25. How Krishna promised to Panchali 2 times he would kill all her enemies. The 2nd time was just before he met Karna to make the offer.
26. How Krishna tells Arjuna it is okay to lie to an enemy.
27. (Extrapolation). Between #25 and #26, Krishna's offer to Karna has to be read as a deliberate lie meant to weaken Karna along with knowledge of his parentage.
28. How, till then, Kunti chose to do absolutely nothing to Karna, in spite of knowing what he'd done to her daughter-in-law and other sons.
29. How, finally, she vents to Krishna and calls Karna a wretch that wanted to eat her children.
30. How Karna shot and broke Abhimanyu's bow from behind.
31. How Karna KNEW Abhimanyu and Ghatotkatch were his nephews when he killed them. No one from the Pandava side knew who Vrishasen was when he was killed.
32. How Karna OFFERED his wives and sons as slaves to who ever would help him kill Krishna and Arjuna.
33. How Anga was the hub of sex trafficking of women and children.
34. How Karna insulted every caste and every region in the subcontinent.
35. How Karna mocked Shalya for giving women freedom.
36. How Krishna mocked Karna as a criminal at the time of the killing.
37. Finally, how Sutha was NOT low-caste. It was a Kshatriya sub-caste, when the mother was Brahmin. Sutha is not the same as Shudra. Suthas were not limited to being charioteer. The lowest caste in all of the plot was probably Vidura as a Kshattri, and he was practically worshipped by Pandavas and Panchali and Krishna.

Karna was clearly rich (even his birth name was given because he was wealthy), upper-caste, and educated. He acted entitled and sulked when things didn't go his way. He tried to kill a child. He ordered sexual assault on a woman. He profited from sex trafficking. He was also a misogynist of the first order. He mocked lower castes. He killed his nephews knowingly.

If you're willing to hear, I can provide you all the citations. Then, you'll decide if Karna was hero or villain.

Again, I'm well aware of Pandava crimes. I repeat, I'm not a fan of that side, either.

You can either DM me for citations (2 or 3 at a time, please. It takes a lot of effort) or ask me to post.

--------

Also, you don't have to take my word for it.

NPB is one of the biggest experts on MBh in the country. I'm super excited for his MBh encyclopedia. Also, super worried I won't be able to afford it.

Authors like Kavita Kane, Chitra Banerjee, and Anand Neelakantan have done fictionalized retellings. A sort of "what if." They admit it in their foreword. But few people read the foreword. Devdutta Pattnaik also admits he has borrowed from folktales, but he labels his work as non-fiction, thereby fooling people. If you watch his interviews, it's fairly clear he has an agenda.

I was especially tickled by Kane's tweets because... well, you can see the hypocrisy.

If you can, please get the Critical Edition. If not, there is KMG, with all its interpolations.

@MahanalayakKarn
My takes are not based on any particular version of Mahabharata...I have formed these opinion from the stories I heard from my parents, grandparents and teachers, the multiple books I read, the stories I learned from my text books etc..
I have never heard a version were Karn was a pure black character like you depicted..so it's difficult for me to believe it..
I disagree with your comment on south Indian version mentioning Karna failing in swayamvara challenge or other heinous crimes you accused him of doing.. because I am a south Indian myself and all the versions I have read are in favour of Karna.
There was a time I used to hate Pandavas for being overhyped but now I am neutral towards all the characters because I understood every character in Mahabharata is grey and everyone has their positive and negative points. The injustice happened with Karna and Ekalavya still boils my blood..only character I disliked is Kunti for the multiple injustice she did to Karna but after reading your comments on Kunti like her reason for marrying Pandu was karna being in Hastinapur gives me some relief..I dnt know whether it's true or not but I am choosing to believe it because that thought is giving me some mental piece..so thanks for this info.
Thanks for providing information about the authentic versions of Mahabharata, but sorry I am not interested because I am not into mythology much.

You dont have to believe me. All you have to do is read at least KMG which is freely available online. I can give you the links to the relevant passages. Every point I gave you has textual evidence behind it. When I have extrapolated, I have mentioned

Also, if you go to Mahabharata Resources webpage, it will have southern versions which should clarify for you Karna's failure at the swayamvara.

Like you, I too used to believe tales I heard from grandparents, forgetting that they had not read the text, either. I urge you to be curious.

If that does not satisfy the person that discovers Arjuna to me, I will make him a more valuable gift, that, indeed, which he himself will solicit. Sons, wives and articles of pleasure and enjoyment that I have, these all I shall give him if he desires them.

Yudhishtira at least had the excuse of being desperate at the time. Karna was donating his wives and sons as slaves so he could have the glory of killing Arjuna.

Do you realize by name calling and using such words you're only degrading your own self and proving that you are indeed a troll. You make claims of reading CE yet you haven't posted any satisfactory translations . And these multiple accounts don't fool anyone.

By South Indian editions they mean the Kumbhakonam Dakshinatya edition which is available online in sanskrit. I don't know if it's translation is available.
You've clearly stated that you don't care what's in the Original and want to believe stories, novels, etc. Well that's your choice. But you cannot go on making claims based on flimsy stories and novels which are obviously biased. That's like making claims on the Harry Potter series by just reading fanfiction and saying I'm not interested in the original.
I'm a medical student. What if someday you come to me and I tell you that I'll treat you on the basis of what my parents, grandparents etc. Taught me and not what's given in actual books since I can't be bothered to read actual books on medicine? Will you be okay in taking treatment from me?
