Acting on the Uttar Pradesh government’s zero tolerance policy on issues affecting social harmony, Lucknow Police have registered an FIR against the director and team of the upcoming film Ghooskhor Pandat. The film is slated for release on Netflix and has drawn criticism following the circulation of its teaser and promotional material online.
The case has been lodged at Hazratganj police station. The FIR cites allegations of hurting caste based sentiments, promoting social animosity, and attempting to disturb public peace. Police officials said the action followed cognisance of the film’s title and content, which were found objectionable at first glance.
According to the police, the title allegedly targets and demeans a particular caste, specifically the Brahmin community. Officials stated that the wording used in the film’s promotions and dialogues triggered strong reactions across social media platforms. The backlash, they said, created a situation that could potentially escalate into wider social unrest.
Lucknow Police said the matter was taken seriously in view of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s clear instructions against any attempt to disrupt communal or social balance. Officers added that content capable of inflaming caste sentiments would invite strict legal action, irrespective of the medium involved.
The controversy soon entered the political space, with several leaders commenting on the issue. Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati criticised the film’s title, stating that creative works should not insult any community or deepen existing social divisions. She warned that such content risks damaging long standing social harmony.
Several social and community organisations have also raised objections to the film. Some groups have reportedly warned of protests if corrective steps are not taken. Police officials said the growing outrage raised concerns related to law and order, prompting intervention.
Hazratganj station house officer Vikram Singh said that, prima facie, the film’s promotion appeared to encourage animosity within society. He said such acts threaten the social fabric and cannot be ignored. “Strict action will be taken against those responsible,” he added.
The Lucknow Police Commissionerate reiterated that investigations are ongoing. Officials said further legal action will depend on evidence collected, digital content circulated, and applicable provisions.
