The actor and avid reader talks books, movies and how they come together for her
While Sonam K Ahuja is known for her diverse fashion choices and film roles, most remain unaware of her love for readingdespite the number of times her InstagramStories feature her current read while she's at the airport, on a flight or even on set. In case you didn't know this already, the actor has been associated with the MAMI Word To Screen Market since 2016, and incidentally, has just started work on The Zoya Factor, a movie based on a book. We got her to sit down with us to talk about booksfrom her dream paper-to-film projects to the one book that gave her a new perspective when she re-read it. Following are some edited excerpts.
You've been associated with the MAMI Word To Screen Market for two years now. Is there something new you've discovered about storytelling for the two different media along the way?
You know, I think I've always been a voracious reader and I love films, so being a part of something like this is a great amalgamation. It's a great partnership and it makes me very happy to be a part of it.
The most common critique for movies based on books, is that the film is never as good as the book. Any movies you can think of that you felt were just as good, if not better, than their literary counterparts?
The Godfather, 3 Idiots and Kai Po Che!; I loved The Help [too]I think it was as good as the book.
Which books do you hope will someday make it to the big screen?
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. And well, I would love to see Jaya by Devdatt Pattnaik, [which is] based on Indian mythology.
What are you currently reading?
I started re-reading Kitchen Confidential after Anthony Bourdain passed away.
What are the three books you'd advise everyone to read?
Being Hindu by Hindol Sengupta, The Pregnant King by Devdatt Pattnaik and The Unbearable Lightness of Being [by Milan Kundera]. And I loved Perfume. If you want to start reading, read the classics first.
Is there a book that you've re-read and fallen in love with all over again?
I think it was Emma when I did AishaI hadn't read it since I was very, very young and I never used to like Emma as a person. Then when I read it, I guess I was 22 or 23 years old, I realised it's okay to be a little flawed or very flawed as Emma was, and you can still be a heroine.
Does Anand enjoy reading as well?
Not as much as I do. He reads though.
Do you have a reading corner at home?
Yeah, my whole home.
Is there a certain book that had a great impact on you and your life?
The Gita.
