It does happen many times, You read a review where a film has been criticised at some parts unncessarily but still you go to watch the movie as some part of the review was good.
After seeing the movie you realise the reviews you read are not on the same line of thought.
You dont find any faults in the movie and about acting and all and you thoroughly enjoyed it.

At times you find some deliberate attempt by a critic to do fault finding because he/she doesnt like the actor at all.Not favourite . Or the critic dislikes the director/ producer connection to any political party etc etc .He/she just thrashes a movie on a personal grudge basis.

So if a critic's personal preference is coming on the way of reviewing a movie, then does it remain objective?

Why do we pay so much heed to what critics say?
We never listen to critics when its about our favourite stars film releasing
But if its a film about a another not so popular star we wait to see the feedback of critics.

Is it necessary that
When the film critics dont seen to be honest about their job, why should we rely on them?
Fim critic also means that he/she has a job for film appreciation too.
Some critics go tot he extent of calling the director and writers as fools who backed the story.
Fine, you didnt like the film, does it mean the critic has to be so brutal?

Example- I didnt like rohit shetty's dilwale. But i was dissapointed by the language of some of the critics for the movie. Some critics were criticising the poor taste of those audience who will go for the movie. Calling the screenplay writer a lost case.

Films like 102 not out ,Raazi had fans who didnt wait for the reviews .They just went by their choice to see their fav star on first day and later on word of mouth.
Actually many critics try to take credit saying that because of us your film ran in theatres.
Hidden agendas of the critics does come to forefront when we read their artciles.

One critic from a local edition of a newspaper in maharashtra told me that- " the upcoming movie Race 3 is not my type of movie, neither i am a salman fan. But i will be objective reviewing it and wont coin phrases like its a treat for people without brains.. one can dismiss a film even without being rude.

so should we understand that the critic and our opinion may not be same.
so why to follow the critics?

whats your thoughts??

CRITICS
They are bunch of ppl who will review films & then will EXPECT WITH GREAT PRIDE that World will also look into those films with same perspective.

If World doesn't agree with their point of view, they start making fun of audience loving those films with lines like keep brain at home to watch this film.

There was always critics, but boom in Multiplex Audience has given boom to critics also, now a bunch of audience wait for reviews. So now they got some power to influence if not all, but a set of audience.

I have never watched any film after reading any review... the moment a Trailer comes, If I like it I will go watch the film just on my instinct, not coz critics reviews it better or worse.

I don't follow critics.
Anyway who is credible critic right now in Bollywood.

All I found is bardwaj rangan is somewhat good but he hardly do any bollywood review.

Anupama masand raja sen etc are bottom of the barrel critics with hardly anything worthwhile to read.

agree with both of you

In recent times
102 not out some crtics took out flaws not needed at all
still i went to watch

and more recently parmanu.. god these few critics called it jingoistic and some very rude comments .Does expressing love for nation become jingloistic? Should a person be so reserved not to let out his/her feelings or express through dialogues their love for nation. Does it mean jingoism?

On thh contrary i didnt find anything to criticise,I loved the movie.

Cocktail was criticised too.But the movie was loved by all people

I dont know why should we follow anothers persons opinion to decide to watch a movie.

we should just rely on trailer, and then word of mouth from genuine people who have watched it or check intenet about public review and last option read reviews.

The premises is good, as in the West critics have supported many indie movies and have helped spread the word...some movies even got Oscars and other awards because the critics supported them.
But there are a lot of biased critics - in the West and in India , too.

The problem is that many become biased due to contacts with producers, or have other vested interests (like Anupama with her husband VV Chopra's movies- she won't be critical of his movies).

Then there are critics that get money for reviews-(Rajeev Masand mentioned this in some chat) and this seems to spread..so they will probably be more favourable..or more 'indulgent' with their critique towards movies whose producers are related to them or from whom they receive monetary 'gifts'.

There are very few really respected critics, anyway.

Still, there are a lot of people that might read a newspaper or watch a critic TV show and get influenced by them on whether to go or not watch a movie.

Some people, if they see many critics giving favourable reviews, will go see the movie- so there is the critics' power.

So the business potential- for critics to make money and for producers to have their movie hailed when is not so great- is still there. Also, the critics can then demand monetary 'gifts' from other movies and point out-'see, we reviewed that movie well, even if average, and it got people in cinemas. Do the same or we will trash your movie'- so this create another inequality for those movies that have small funds.

And also, the producers can, if the movie is a moderate success, parade their reviews and just say: 'well, the critics understood us, it's the public that doesn't get how great our movie is'. Then they can turn a flop into a 'misunderstood movie'- which sometimes does happen..but in general movies that flop have some issues and do not gel with audiences well enough.

it's another form of cronyism- and people should just maybe trust their instincts, or go because the actor they like is in it..or have faith in the director or the trailers.

In the end, people vote with their wallets. if they like a movie, they will see it, no matter how much the critics trash it.

I don't read reviews by critics. Khaali peeli Dimaag ka Dahi. I loved Lootera which almost got perfect five stars from every major critic but I also loved Aiyaaa just as much which was panned by all and sundry. Mein sirf khud ki Sunti hoon. 😆

I think It's important to understand that everyone has different tastes in terms of movies, so not every critic's review is going to resonate with you. I'm usually critical when watching movies because I can't turn my brain off so I like reviewers like Anupama and Rajeev that are not too nit-picky but still mention all the faults while looking at the larger picture, so I can get a clear sense of what kind of movie it is. It just really depends on your preferences.

I don't understand the need for film critics
They have nothing to contribute
I hate them

I never read reviews. I always form my own opinion after watching a movie

^^ they are supposed to be a guide..they are supposed to be knowledgeable and unbiased and their opinion ( mind, it's also personal preference) is supposed to help audiences understand what the movie is about, what's good and what's not..
The day I see Anupama criticising Vinu Vinod Chopra and his movies, I might believe her- Sanju is coming and it's produced by her husband so..let's see. Until then, she is fluff stuff.
I generally read/listen to interviews done by Anupama and Rajeev to garner more knowledge about the stars, the filming process, anecdotal stuff. And watch them react to questions.
Then you have Anupama's friend.. that guy barely likes 3 movies the whole year...that's another side of the coin, lol.

The problem with critics today is the involvement of politics in movies both in HW and BW . Anything left-wing will be praised and anything right-wing will be bashed . Look at Wonder woman and Black panther - both good movies but praised to the skies cos it had a woman and black guy as heroes
