From Aamir Khan's Dangal to Salman Khan's Wanted, here are 21 films Ranveer Singh took digs at in Deadpool 2 Hindi

By Rajat Tripathi | Updated:Wed, May 16, 2018 10:32am

In the Hindi version of the film, Ranveer Singh voices the superhero. Sorry Ryan Reynolds, if we start a campaign to replace you as the lead.

So, the Merc with a Mouth is back with a sequel. Deadpool 2 opens in theatres this Friday. In the Hindi version of the film, Ranveer Singh provides the voiceover for the superhero. And Sorry Ryan Reynolds, but we might just launch a campaign to replace you as the lead. Because after hearing Ranveer as Deadpool, I am not able to decide if Ranveer Singh is more Deadpool than Deadpool, or if he is more Deadpool than he is Ranveer Singh. Such impeccable comic timing, man! And yes, we have to give his voice a lot of credit since more than half the time, Ryan is under the mask and it is just wonderful acoustics of Ranveer's voice that do the job. More on that later. Here we are going to talk about the fabulous potshots that the actor takes at Bollywood pop culture.

You see, Deadpool is a character that loves to break the fourth wall and talk directly to the camera. He is a character that likes to make references to movies. He is someone who likes to make meta-jokes you know like saying, "Ranveer Singh is a great actor in the Hindi version of the film. So, in the version which I watched since the makers wanted to connect to the desi audience, most of the potshots and references are aimed at Bollywood. Here is a list of Bollywood movies that Deadpool 2 makes referential jokes about! (ALSO READ: EXCLUSIVE! Deadpool 2 actor Karan Soni is excited about having "a bigger story in the sequel)

#OneWordReview... #Deadpool2
: WINNER. Crazy and wicked humour [and madcap one-liners]... Dynamic action... @RanveerOfficial's fiery voiceover adds a lot of energy to the character of #Deadpool
... Packs loads of fun in those 2 hours...

So I'm planning to see #Deadpool2
in Hindi. @VancityReynolds, as subversive, smirking superhero, dubbed by @RanveerOfficial sounds like a crackling combination. Will report back!

I found the dubbing of the trailer strictly mediocre at most. It did not have the chutzpah of the original. Punchlines fell flat.

Just like the dubbing of South movies always fell flat when it comes to punch line. Thankfully South comedians have excellent body language and expressions we get the gist of what they are trying to portray.

Hindi version is good for those who won't understand American pop culture references.

That is why I am not a fan of dubbing. Language has a lot of nuances. There are a lot of things conveyed by tone of voice, the natural rhythm of speech patterns along with body language. When you dub films you lose a lot of the voice and speech aspects. It lacks authenticity. That is why subtitles are the way to go. I always seek out films in the original language of production.

Even in music, there is just something about the original language songs not captured in English versions. I prefer singers and bands in their original language. Enrique Iglesias, Shakira and Pitbull all have a very passionate quality in Spanish not captured in their English songs.

That is why I'm glad Rammstein said they would never do a song in English or release an English version. How would you even translate Du hast mich into English? You have me or You hate me?

IMO, the best dubbing I have heard so far is Sergey Lazarev's Russian rendition of Scream for High School Musical 3. 😆
