Kanak ironed Shiv and Suman's clothes and arranged nicely in the armoire, She had some time to kill before Shiv came home from school. The servants had an afternoon off on Tuesdays. Maasa had gone to visit an old friend. Uma and Meera were at work.
Kanak felt restless. She had convinced herself that Uma was a big fraud. Yet nothing had prepared her for their first meeting after the gap of 2 long years with no communication. The sight of his beloved face drove everything else away from her mind. The clouds of deep sorrow moved away from her heart to reveal the image of Uma that perpetually lived there. No matter what this was her one true love and it could never go away. Her legs had moved towards him of their own volition, The magnetic pull was as omnipresent as it always was. His face was more rugged. There were shadows under his eyes and fine lines of pain? furrowed his brows. They had not been able to take their eyes off of each other...
The bell rang and Kanak broke out of her reverie'.She went to the door thinking it might be maasa,She was taken aback to see the tall figure of Uma. His face looked a little flushed and his eyes looked dull..Kanak was going to ask why he was here this early but then thought why she should care. He barely looked at her and went straight to his room. Kanak went back to her own room too. She lingered for 5 minutes before starting to feel uneasy about how Uma looked. She could not help venturing out to take a peek through the half opened doorway of his room. He was laying on the bed still in his suit. His legs were dangling down as he had not even taken his shoes off. Kanak's heart began to beat faster. Was he okay?
