Chapter 36 Dwelling, cursing and caring
'Geet we need to visit the doctors today' Maan informed looking briefly at Geet before heading towards his cabin. It had been a few days now and Geet had fully recovered but even then he hadn't managed to voice his recent feelings, yet they grew bountiful as every ounce of spare time was spent with Geet; her being ill was his fruitful excuse. Everyday he'd walk into her room with the words can we give this marriage a try' graved in his head but by the time he walked out her room, they seemed to be mushed into puddles of laughter, silly banter and everything that wasn't even close to his iota. He hadn't experienced such strong emotions ever. Never before was he this scared of a reaction, yes there were times where he recalculated steps trying to make sure his actions caused less grieve to certain individuals but never ever had he actually fought with himself to this extent. He had always been the one to act and then think, but with Geet; he forever was just thinking and never acting. Not that it was his fault, on many occasions he was left speechless like when her eyes giggled in furry or when she screamed a joke, or when she cried in joy. Everything with her was of vast contrast, yet everyday was a new day; and everyday seemed to increase his want to make this marriage work. The oath to Dadi was long forgotten, even Sameera and the promises he made once was locked into a closet.
'Morning Geet, how are you feeling Hun' Pinky greeted, circling her big fat arms around Geet in a friendly hug.
'Better, thank you' Geet answered in scepticism, her hands waning in semi-hug. It wasn't that she didn't like Pinky's friendly gesture, actually it was the over-friendliness of it which frankly speaking Geet wasn't used to. Pinky had made it a point to call Geet every day to know how she's doing, initially it surprised Geet and almost pleased her to know someone out there really cared for her in her new world. But last night's conversation with her mother scared her. Why would someone you hardly know go through all that bother of finding your number in some file' her mother had questioned and then left with Geet be cautious, this isn't a friendly world' and now for some reason Geet was second guessing all of Pinky's actions. Call be paranoia or doubt but Geet was certain Pinky had a secret agenda. The last person she trusted without knowing broke her heart, and she didn't want Pinky to be another Maan.
'Good, I was so missing an eating buddy' Pinky spoke with a full mouth making Geet giggle.
'You want some' she asked forwarding the half-eaten Panini to which Geet refused politely, still very much few to Pinky's weird habits
'Geet don't forget, we leave at 12' Maan called once he was in his cabin
'Maan I'm not suffering from memory loss, you just told me 5 mins ago' she countered looking at Pinky exasperated
'That's good then, I expect you in my cabin by 11:30'
'Kyun' was her sharp reply
'There's something called traffic' he answered with a smirk logging onto his laptop
'Haha so funny NOT' she slammed the phone looking at a shocked Pinky and then immediately looked away, for there were questions in her eyes which right now Geet chose to ignore and instead cracked on with her assigned work. As a temporary receptionist, she was given several tasks which would build her confidence and her business acumen. There was also the an employee voice survey which Adi kindly pointed to however being the Geet that she is; she refused, although it is a mundane task, that the middle leaders came up with in their free time' or so Pinky keeps repeating.
'What is the bloody point if this?' Pinky said out loud printing the questionnaire, her smiley face turned on an edge just by looking at the number of papers printing. Once done they needed to be compiled and then photocopied, some may even need to be retyped onto the company website if the senior leader's team thought it showcased Khuranna Construction in a good light.
'It's like as if I'm on a sunny beach with nothing to do. Shitty leaders and their shitty thoughts. God I need the blue sky and a sunbed' Pinky mumbled and just on que the phone sprang to life
'Khuranna Construction' Pinky answered
'Well morning Mr Hamlet, how can I help you today?' she spoke in an professional manner tapping away at the keyboard while Geet stepped forward carrying on with the stapling Pinky was doing a few minutes ago.
'You sure you'll be ok Hun' Pinky finally addressed turning towards Geet after ending the call, as Geet stood ready for Pinky's instruction
'Yeah it should be fine, all I do is drop these questionnaires off to the different departments and the rest they do, right?' she asked unsure, seeing how busy Pinky was Geet offered to do the least; be the delivery person. This way she was fulfilling her duty and could also stay away, still very much reluctant to face new people.
'Yep that's it, even if they ask for other errands just run a mile; especially from that Sasha. That girl would not even a spare dead man' Pinky laughed before the beeping phone asked for her attention again leaving a sulking Geet, she really wanted Pinky to ask one final time and then Geet would have mustered the courage to say Can you go while I'll manage the phones' but of course now she couldn't. After counting to 3, Geet made her way to the lift.
'Geet' Pinky hissed
'You sure' she mouthed meeting Geet's wish but the ping of the lift and the divided attention of Pinky wasn't helping, hence with a compulsory node Geed treaded into the lift pressing onto the 1st floor.
'These are for you, it's a mandatory questionnaire. Each member of staff in your department needs to complete it by the end of the day' Geet said in a go. So far it had been a relatively easy task, minus the odd stares and the silent whispers of who's she', it so far went touch wood' ok. Up until she reached the fifth floor and Tasha, the name badge showed; started her firing questions.
'For the sixth time, I understand these are required by the company but who are you'
'You care because' came Geet's immediate reply
'Look I'm working at reception for now, and I've been told to deliver these important surveys. It's for the senior staff and the CEO' Geet answered as patiently as she could biting her tongue
'For god's sake, of course I know what these are, Employee voice survey. Like duh. I'm Tasha, right hand of Sasha. WE KNOW EVERYTHING, LIKE EVERYTHING' she answered with pompous air while Geet looked incredulously at the tiny woman in front of her. She was wearing a tiny black pencil skirt, a ridiculously oversized purple shirt tucked neatly however it exposed far too much cleavage with metallic purple pencil heels. Matching where the purple ear rings, and a purple bracelet; thankfully her makeup was a little toned down with nude lipstick. But Tasha looked, dare Geet say it, a little like trash.
'Ok, then you should know that you have to distribute these' that being said Geet turned on her heels and pushed her trolley down the path feeling already too exhausted. While Tasha looked incredulously mortified by the gall of the woman, who on earth dares to ignore her. Her, Tasha, right hand of Sasha. She and Sasha almost ruled the company. She scrutinised the girl who by now was a few firm feet away, but even then she surveyed her black and white knee-length checkered dress and tights, matching were the black dolly shoes. Feeling slightly offended by her low-key wardrobe, Tasha immediately grabbed her mobile.
'Sasha that new chick, the one MK walked in with, has fire' she texted
'Excuse me MK!' came the reply almost instantly
'Silly me, I mean Maan sir' she replied rolling her eyes, for a fleeting second she looked up at Geet, who was walking past Maan's office and then immediately looked back again seeing how Maan pulled the door open and shouted out Geet'. Resulting in two things: 1. Tasha choked on her gum, 2. All staff looking their way; which Maan obviously diffused with an angry glare while Tasha doubled over trying to reduce the cough. Just what was going on with her boss and the new girl?
'You look exhausted' Maan commented tugging Geet within his cage, his cabin; which looked slightly different as sunlight spread like vast ocean; a stark contrast than her previous visits.
'I am' she answered dimly leaning onto him while he steered her to the couch
'I don't want to sit there' she moaned looking darkly at the stationary couch
'Where do you want to sit then?' he asked musically as she pointed towards his big black revolving chair, doing what he had expected. He then led her to his chair and crouched on his knees feeling her head
'You feeling ok, we can leave for the appointment now if you like?' he asked looking at the clock that was placed on his desk, which read 9:45.
'No I'm fine just the employees here are a bit crazy' she scoffed remembering Tasha and her incessant attitude
'What is that meant to mean, I employed them all' Maan said offended looking at her with saucer eyes
'Well then you too are crazy' she offered giggling between her palms while Maan tried to maintain his aghast expression but seeing her smile warmed his heart like always, thus he too ended up giggling.
'Have you eaten?' he asked reaching for the phone
'No though Pinky offered her half-eaten panini. Where does she get all that food from?' she asked rotating on his chair while he slipped to the opposite chair that was mainly reserved for his employees and clients.
I' don't know, you should ask her boyfriend Adi' he answered absent minded, dialling a number
'WHAT' she screamed and then shut up seeing his silent glare
'Sorry' she muttered while he placed a small order, cheese sandwich to be precise with 2 soft drinks
'They are dating?' she questioned immediately after he hung up, already knowing the food was for her. That's all his been doing over the last few days, ensuring she ate and checking her temperature; regardless of what time it was or who's around. Just yesterday, she and Vicky where out on the balcony conversing about random stuff like usual when Maan came like a wind, felt her head and neck and then felt giving her orders to finish off the boiled egg and pasta. Of course after he went, Vicky threw an amused look but didn't say anything. Come to think of it Vicky never spoke of them, never really questioned Maan and Geet's relationship but always stood firm beside her. But these days there was a change, like a silencer was placed onto him; making him even more remote than he was with Maan; he even reduced meeting Geet, in her standards.
'Maan have you noticed the changes in Vicky' she asked after several minutes of thoughts stopping Maan in his reading activity, he then looked away from her questioning eyes feeling afraid he would fail her by failing to contain himself
'Hmm' he answered a few minutes later looking at a point behind her head while she looked between him and the desk. Knowing fully well that Maan wasn't comfortable answering the question, truth be told Maan always closes himself when she asks about his family; be it Dadi, Vicky or even his parents.
The knock on the door was a welcome change for both, changing the atmosphere. The next second a plate and two cokes where placed on the desk. Smiling a little at the cafeteria boy, Geet pulled forward the plate while he walked out the cabin wishing them a good day.
'Don't tell me, you know him too' Maan uttered in astonishment while she offered the other half of the sandwich to him which he took, knowing she'll only complain about eating too much and then that would end up on a diet and exercise talk, the exact talk he heard every day during every meal.
'No of course I don't, I don't talk to strangers' she sounded offended, her family taught her never to speak to unknown others hence she was at this point in her life where strangers made her uncomfortable and the mere thought of speaking made her nervous. But that being said, she couldn't forget her identity, which walked with her; her shining smile and jubilant soul.
'But it's rude not to smile, especially when he's taking care of me'
'He isn't, I am!' he corrected almost immediately with slight roughness
'Ok you are' she confirmed looking at an agitated Maan, he needed no reason to grow angry at times. But Geet understood better to not to fuel his anger or to be scared of him
'Why do you care for me anyway, I'm better now' she joked trying to lighten up his mood
'Because I am your husband' he answered looking right at her
