The Norms of Indian Television

Hi Everyone,
So, the weekend is getting over here and like everyone in the forum I'm still reeling from all the OLVs that we are getting to see and pondering over these. After seeing all these OLVs, I've realized that if you are a viewer of the Indian television, you need to be receptive towards anything and everything they show you. Every show claims to be unique and every fan thinks their respective show is different from the rest, but I'm also realizing that collectively they are all the same and all have the same track at one point or another. The Indian television seems to have some stipulations for a show's survival and without which no show can survive the race of trp and our show is proving it is no exception. This also made me think how long I've been watching all these things and made me make a post/list of all the norms of Indian television I've been fed in the name of creativity so far. And so it goes...

OBSESSED VILLAINS/EXES/NEW ENTRY - a villain whose only goal in life is to destroy the hero/heroine. Any new entry be it male or female wants only the leads, even if they are married and even if there's a handsome/beautiful supporting character who is completely available. The leads might be married and irrevocably in love with each other, yet that doesn't stop the villains from plotting against them to separate them. The funny part is they succeed too in breaking the supposed strongest relationships, most of the time without breaking a sweat.

JAIL TRACK - this is one track that you are sure to witness in every show. Every hero/heroine would have visited this place at least once in the show. This is one place no common person wants to visit in their life, no matter which part of the world you belong to. Yet, these CVs make it look like a vacation spot which shouldn't be missed. It's so hilarious to watch that the leads need so much proofs and plots to trap a villain, yet when it comes to the leads one single doubt is enough to put them behind bars and let them rot there for months.

LEAP - if not all, at least most of the shows have leap once the leads consummate. I wonder would they still have been together if they hadn't done the deed, if you know what I mean. Most of the time these leaps happen with the FLs being the sacrificial lambs in the name of true Love. In real life situation, a guy would start doubting his own performance skills in the bedroom department if his wife dumped him right after. All these leaps in the name of moving the story ahead. Wish all the shows would standstill for the first 100 or so episodes, because those are the only golden times for a viewer. After that it's all twists and turns...

SACRIFICE- every show has someone sacrificing to the point of going away from each other and they call it love. Then what is Love, what is marriage, the vows that you make to each other to be with each other till death do us apart?? For me, this looks like the selfishness of one person who refuses to stand the test of time and rather opts to take the easy way out. Call me insensitive, but this is something I will never understand. If going away from each other would solve any problem, then nobody in this world would be together for more than 6 months in a marriage. I'm yet to see a show where the leads stay together till the end of the show without separating at least once. And shouldn't forget the divorce. Anyone who watches the divorce rate in Indian television would lose faith in the institution of marriage. Out of the box is still a foreign concept to ITV.

A KID - every show brings a kid track, why? Nobody knows, wonder even makers know it. The CVs need to understand that no matter how cute and bubbly a kid is, a fan/viewer is interested in the leads. Why bring a kid for one track and have them end up being a third wheel between the leads forever. You can't get rid of the kid and we don't want to see the kid.

That's quite a list and a very cynical post I should say, guess I needed to vent it out. Though the intelligent side of me still questions my sanity for watching all the turns and twists that the CVs throw at us in the name of creativity, yet the foolish emotional fan/viewer heart in me says you are still going to watch all this because you like to watch the wonderful actors showcase the emotions so beautifully.

God bless everyone. Have a blessed day...

I feel you babe! I remember a long time back when chuhi saga was on I also went on a ranting spree. Infact after every track I have had a rant or two and questioned myself on why do I watch it...if these actors are so amazing that they pull off crappy content so convincingly then what would they do with good content...pata nahi kab ayega voh din when tv will have the stories that are completely real and relatable and sensible like it was in the DD era...my parents tell me ki kitne acche shows hua karte the uss time pe. But that's a much larger question. People on the forum have enlightened me s bit about pressures of PH,channel etc etc...but abhi ke liye it is what it is.

There are few more like leads meeting with near death experience, prolonged misunderstandings, fake deaths, memory loss, plastic surgery, coma
No matter how much we mock about these cliche and abnormal stuffs, at the end of the day, if the execution is entertaining we watch it because after all we watch a show for entertainment only
And yes everybody feels that their show is unique and wonder why others are not able to see the uniqueness of their favorite show 😆

Fact fact fact👏.. How true.. Whatever you have written is just so valid in every case of the TV show and it's audience...👍🏼

It's just like the movie world revolves around the same old stories on action, romance, comedy, etc. Yes everyone has the same concept and same story then what makes them different.. It's the way that these same old stories are being handled. Yes everyone has a leap and how well they fit the leap into their story.. Yes everyone has a villain and how well they make use of his or her traits to bring twist in the story.. Yes, Everyone has romance and SR but how aesthetically and sensually they capture those emotions... Yes, that's where the audience are looking to see something engaging and entertaining...😉

It's just like the people world revolves around the same parts of the body like eyes, nose, mouth, legs, hands, etc.😆 Then why aren't Everyone the same.. We have the difference among us right..😛

And the search for that difference in quality and creativity keeps continuing.. But the race for earning and running the business never fails to cease.. And finally the return on investment wins over the return of satisfaction😉.. And the rule is "money decides the success factor". Be it for the people or for the business.. 😃

All shows are same, after the golden 100 days you are talking about. After the duration ends the fandom starts ranting about the show, with my experience I stopped attaching myself with any show because it hurts that you expect something and a select trp audience decides that this show is not worth it.
This show has relatively more negativity compared to other shows. The balance is missing. Since Dayawanti's negativity became too much I suppose they had to take a leap. Now to clear the mess, another leap I suppose. That 6 month and this upcoming leap I dont understand the point. Their 1st leap made sense rest are not exactly making sense.

I would say stop attaching yourself to a show automatically rest follows - no heart break, ranting, you concentre on your real life better.

Your parents are right. DD had some of the best shows. If you were born in the late 80s or early 90s, you grew up with some of the best things television could offer. My all time favorite is Byomkesh Bakshi. Golden period really. Now it's all the same stuff wrapped in different wrappings. People say don't judge the book by its cover. Unfortunately now cover is the only attractive thing in this scenario, inside everything is the same...

Thanks for the update, that's a lot of cliches I missed. Now I don't know if I should be happy that they left out a few of the stupidest ones or I should be sad that within a very short span they managed to cover a lot of these typical plots...

Money does rule Indian television and in spite of the truth staring at our faces, yet here we are still hoping to find something unique to watch, still hoping there would come a time when a show would break the stereotypes and come up with something new...

Don't be happy. Aage aage aur bhi cliches ke liye ready rahna padega! Aaj ek aur amazing plot dikhaya- drug inject karo aur bande se kuch bhi karao. Thodi der baad insaan drug je kaaran behosh hojayega lekin shoot karte time nishaana acche se lagayega. And vidyut can be in 2 places at once. Neel is aiming at vidyut in front of him and in the video they show vidyut only injecting prakash and giving him the gun. So vidyut Neel ke aage bhi aur peeche bhi! Talent hai boss!
