Kaalakaandi Movie Review: Saif Ali Khan Makes His Character Work In Fizzy, Freewheeling Film

Kaalakaandi Movie Review: Saif Ali Khan's Kaalakaandi is strewn with interesting takeaways

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Sobhita Dhulipala, Deepak Dobriyal, Akshay Oberoi, Kunaal Roy Kapur

Director: Akshat Verma

Rating: Three stars

Delhi Belly scripter Akshat Verma's maiden directorial venture, in essence, possesses the madcap spirit that propelled the 2011 hit. Kaalakaandi is set in Mumbai and focused primarily on more mature characters. So its tone, texture and treatment are markedly different. The film is primarily in English, with only two underworld underlings conversing in street-level Hindi peppered liberally with expletives. It is clear that Verma is fascinated by mavericks and misfits. But armed with the quality of his writing, he turns the freaky, freewheeling, fizzy Kaalakaandi into a human drama that explores life's surprises, love, mortality, greed and betrayal.

Not all of it adds up as neatly as one would have liked, yet it works. Wicked wit and macabre humour leavened with a sense of humanity define this dark comedy's more felicitous moments. The characters are quirky yet real, like the morally conflicted girl shaken by a hit-and-run case that she is involved in or a young man assailed by pangs of guilt at having cheated on his would-be wife.

Kaalakaandi Movie Review: It takes a while to warm up (courtesy YouTube)

Several other confused Mumbaikars have their already messed-up lives thrown into further disarray in the course of a single night that sees mishaps galore. A well-heeled man receives a grim, point-blank medical diagnosis: his days are numbered, he is told. Another, carried away by a gun-slinging Feroz Khan's curry-western act in Khotay Sikkey, accidentally shoots himself in the groin.

There is more. Two partners in crime (Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal) hatch a get-rich-quick plan as they ferry bags of cash in a red hatchback - the plot ends in betrayal and quick comeuppance. Two men on a speeding motorcycle are knocked off their perches on a rain-washed road. And coitus interruptus mars an intended quickie in an upscale hotel room.

Led astray by alcohol, psychotropic substances, passion and the lure of money, every character in Kaalakaandi invites trouble for himself/herself and for all those whose paths they cross wittingly or unwittingly. It is an eventful plot all right, but most of the crucial reveals some via conversations that occur principally inside three moving cars, each denoting an aspect of the city of Mumbai.

For cinema trivia geeks, Kaalakaandi is strewn with interesting takeaways. The principal protagonist (Saif Ali Khan), who like the conscientious but dull bureaucrat Watanabe in the Akira Kurosawa classic Ikiru, is diagnosed with stomach cancer and given only a few months to live.

The character's name isn't revealed until the very end of the film, when he is drawn towards a comely wedding photographer. He could well be, like the self-effacing Watanabe, just another Everyman wasting away his life in the belief that being a "good person" is good enough. He does not smoke, does not drink, and has never done drugs except when his friends tricked him into eating a brownie laced with marijuana. It was an accident. So it wouldn't count as a transgression, he reasons.

But be that as it may, he has a lot of lost time to make up for. He heads to the wedding of his brother (Akshay Oberoi). At the party, after popping a red star microdot, he takes the would-be groom for a prenuptial haircut. On the way, everything that could go wrong goes wrong, or right, depending on who is doing the judging.

In another part of town, another pair (Kunaal Roy Kapoor and Shobhita Dhulipala) have their own seemingly insignificant issues to deal with. The couple weighs the pros and cons of the girl leaving for the US for higher studies. The girl is all for it. But the boy frets: Why are you so gorgeous? The white boys will fall for you.

Kaalakaandi Movie Review: Performances around Saif are in the right zone (courtesy YouTube)

The New York flight is still a few hours away. So the two drop by at the birthday celebrations of a friend (Shehnaz Treasury) in a nightclub. The threesome and the latter's boyfriend (Shivam Patil), who a little later in the film rattles off a whole string of Emraan Hashmi films and sheepishly admits that he is a fan (is that wrong, he asks), are caught in a drug bust.

Angad, on his part, ends up with a gash on his forehead and the hero, motivated strictly by "scientific curiosity, Madame Curie curiosity," and drug-induced hallucinations, hooks up with a transgender streetwalker (Nary Singh). His life, or what is left of it, changes completely.

The multiple tales unfold in parallel arcs. It is only in the penultimate scenes and a zany final shot that the plot connects a few of the characters but only in a tenuous manner. Kaalakaandi takes a while to warm up but when it does it sets a lively pace, especially in the second half.

Three sequences stand out. One is a romantic, whimsical chit-chat between the hero and the wedding photographer that enthuses the former to forget the inevitable. The second is when the brother, wanting to be as fair as he can be, stands before the girl who he is about to marry to announce that he is having second thoughts. And the third is a scene in which one of the criminals, despite his best efforts, is caught lying by his wily boss (Arif Basra).

COMMENTS
Saif Ali Khan brings to the table just the mix of befuddlement and cockiness that is needed to make the character work. The performances around him (notably from Dhulipala and Dobriyal) are in the right zone.

Kaalakaandi may not be for all palates, but the film has enough spice for those in the mood for an off-the-beaten-track Bollywood experience.

Kaalakaandi Movie Review: Saif Ali Khan nails the act despite the brilliance of Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal

Updated: Jan 12, 2018 | 01:09 IST | Gaurang Chauhan

Kaalakaandi | Photo Credit: Times Now

After a disaster that was 2017 for Hindi film industy at the box office, everyone is looking forward to what 2018 has in store. After a lukewarm first week of the year, second week sees as much as 6 film releases including 3 from Hollywood. One and probably biggest of them in terms of starpower is Saif Ali Khan's Kaalakaandi. Starring an ensemble of actors including Vijay Raaz, Deepak Dobriyal, Akshay Oberoi, Shobhita Dhulipala, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Isha Talwar, Shenaz Treasurywala, Shivam Patil, Nary Singh, Amyra Dastur and Neil Bhoopalam, the film is the directorial debut of Delhi Belly script writer, Akshat Verma. Also read: In 2018, here's how you should watch a movie...

The Plot

It's the story of a night...actually, it's about three interwoven stories that happen one night. A banker (Saif Ali Khan) is told he has just few months to live, on the very same day his brother (Akshay Oberoi) is getting married. His brother is in two minds about his marriage when he gets a call from his ex-girlfriend (Amanda Rosario).

There are two henchmen (Deepak Dobriyal and Vijay Raaz) who are done being a henchman and are trying hard to device a plan to con their boss of crores of cash.

There is a live-in couple (Kunaal Roy Kapur and Shobhita Dhulipala) where the guy is dealing with insecurity as his girlfriend is going to US for further studies.

Unknown to them, their life is interconnected through fate. What follows through one fateful night forms the rest of the film.

The Good

What would you do when you are told you have only a month to live or six at max? What would you do if you are in the company of crores of cash that doesn't belong to you? What would you do when you commit a crime unknowingly? The film throws you with these three basic questions. On the outset, the film can be called as just another stoner/black comedy but it's way more than that. It talks about life, karma and death. In one of the scenes Saif's character tells Akshay's character if even the "intent" is counted as cheating then the whole world is a cheater.

What I loved most about the film was the fact that it doesn't spoon feed you, which usually happens with these kind of films. Akshat Verma gives audience the credit of being intelligent enough to understand the proceedings of the film without going with the flashback which usually happens in films with interconnected story.

Coming to the performances each and every character is aptly cast. It's good to see Saif Ali Khan take on such role and make it believable. From the opening scene till the very last, there is an understated sadness in his performance even when he is on a trip (which is for most of the film). This film will go down as one among his best performances of all time. The more I say about Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal the less it is. They are stalwarts and here they slip into the character with much finese and ease. Be it the language or the mannerism they are spot on. As Saif said in one of his interviews they are like DeNiro and Pacino. He is not wrong. Akshay Oberoi has always been good in his previous films, I especially loved him in Laal Rang and here too he is earnest at what he does. He portrays the horniness, the guilt and the love with a pinch of endearment. Kunaal Roy Kapur, Shobhita Dhulipala, Shenaz Treasurywala, Shivam Patil were all first rate. Isha and Saif's chemistry was amazing. Nary Singh was believable.

Special mention to Neil Bhoopalam, just two scenes and he'll chuckle you up.

The music, the cinematography, the setting is all a big thumbs-up. Especially, the Saif Ali Khan story is visually stunning. Kudos to Akshat Verma for such imagination. Also read: Kaalakaandi music review: The songs of this Saif Ali Khan starrer are high on quirk

The Bad

The best story of the lot is Saif Ali Khan one followed by Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal's. The sore thumb here is the third story featuring Shobhita Dhulipala & Kunaal Roy Kapur. For the major part of the film nothing was really going in their tale. Whenever the focus used to shift to their story, I found myself waiting for the film to get on to Saif Ali Khan or even Vijay Raaz-Deepak Dobriyal. You care for Saif's character, you care for Akshay's fate, your care for what Deepak and Vijay are upto but you not really care for what Shobhita and Kunal are upto. Even when the stakes go high for them, you don't really care. Their story was too superficial and trivial.

The pacing is an issue here. The film starts of well and doesn't waste much time in establishing the characters and stories and all goes fine until the interval, after which it takes a dip for worse. At varioous junctures nothing really was happening on the screen noteworthy enough to grab your attention.

I loved the climax even if it was too convinient but would've been better if they had shown more of what happens with Saif's character...a little more.

Verdict

Kaalakaandi should be applauded and watched for the brave and bold experiment it is, for the performances it delivers, for the underlying dark humour it displays, for the deep questions about life, fate, karma and death it throws at you and for the character that is the city of Mumbai. It's not as good as Delhi Belly and not as fun as Aamir Khan said it is, but you'll have good time watching what unfolds on the screen.

Disaster Friday - Kaalakandi Mukkabaaz and 1921
Friday 12 January 2018 14.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

The first Friday in terms of major releases has turned out to be a total disaster. Tiger Zinda Hai gave a lift at the end of last year but normal service resumed this week. Kaalakandi and Mukkabaaz have opened to disaster numbers while 1921 has a disaster release. 1921 is not playing in the major multiplex chains as they have a digital deal which allows this film to go digital after six weeks but the major chains have a requirement for release of 8 weeks.

So what has happened is the makers have let go of the major chains as they prefer the digital revenue but this could change with more negotiation. Still even with 30-40% of the business missing the film could still be the top film of the new releases as the initials of Kaalakandi and Mukkabaaz are so bad.

Kaalakandi has very dull figures but it is better than Mukkabaaz. As per the reports of the former in Mumbai and Delhi the film has a lot of English which seems to be a problem in the main cities so it will be worse for the film in other cities.

The opening of these films make it tough even with growth so it will be basically which film out of these comes out on top. Kaalakandi looks a C grade european film with an Indian setting while Mukkabaaz actually tries to be a desi film but the trailer hardly excites and does not have that vibe of a Hindi desi film and on top a director who also seems inspired from the storytelling of European cinema.

It will be a battle of Europe and day one will go to the European film but maybe in time that realistic Delhi / UP feel could make the Europena directors film catch up. The morning figures of Kaalakandi and Mukkabaaz in Mumbai and Delhi are as follows. The other cities hardly have numbers while 1921 is left due to its releases problems.

Mumbai (40 Cinemas)

Kaalakandi - 623 admits

Mukkabaaz - 442 admits

Delhi (25 cinemas)

Kaalakandi - 469 admits

Mukkabaaz - 376 admits

TOTAL (65 cnemas)

Kaalakandi - 1,092 admits

Mukkabaaz - 818 admits

Considering both Kareena's last two movies Udta Punjab, and ki&ka were hits, your statement is flawed.

Saif seems to have given a tremendous performance. Some calling it one of his best. Don't care whether it runs or not, just great to see this dude living up to his acting potential 😳

1921 managed to get some business back from day one as it was a full out day for the film at multiplexes while day one had an afternoon start. The collections are still low compared to other films in the franchise but if it can show 40-50% growth on Sunday then there can be some hope for a little run for the film. The two day collections of 1921 are as follows

Friday - 1,50,00,000

Saturday - 2,25,00,000

TOTAL - 3,75,00,000

Kaalakandi is a box office disaster as collections dropped on day two. The film only has a limited metro multiplex audience and Saturday is when this audience comes out but this film has failed to grow of a disaster start. As it was said before release here that this sort of cinema has no place in Hindi cinema as the core Hindi audience does not come and the niche audience is getting limited day by day. The two day collections of Kaalakandi is as follows.

Friday - 1,00,00,000

Saturday - 95,00,000

Grand Total - 1,95,00,000

Mukkabaaz has shown growth on its second day as it collected 1.50 crore nett but it had to do more because of the disaster start. The start was so low that even doubling of the collections is not good as it really needed to treble like Newton which got 2.50 crore nett on day two after a 90 lakh opening day (This came due to announcement that this film was going to represent India at the Oscars but no such thing happened with Mukkabaaz). This does not happen often so it really have a chance Mukkabaaz had to do its Saturday number on Friday and then double from that. The two day business of Mukkabaaz is as follows.

Friday - 75,00,000 apprx

Saturday - 1,50,00,000 apprx

TOTAL - 2,25,00,000 apprx

Saif Ali Khan's Kaalankaandi Already In Profit

Posted in Movies with tags Akshat Verma, box office, Cinestaan Film Company, Kaalakaandi, Saif, Saif Ali Khan on January 14, 2018 by saifalikhanonline

In times when filmmakers are spending astronomical sums on making and then marketing their films, here's a production that could teach filmmakers some simple but effective math. The upcoming film Kaalakaandi, a production venture by Cinestaan, has been made on a tight budget of Rs 7 crore. Since the film is targeted at a niche audience, only a modest sum has been set aside to market the movie. How much? Well, the makers have managed to create just the right buzz among the target audience by smartly spending just Rs 4 crore on promotional activities. That's a total budget of Rs 11 crore.

And the interesting part is that the music, satellite and digital rights of Kaalakaandi have already been sold for, yes, you guessed it, Rs 11 crore. Since the producers have already recovered their entire investment, the profit earned from ticket sales will be just that pure profit.

Now that's what we call a smart play!
