DNA Movie Review | Saif Ali Khan's 'Kaalakaandi' is worth a try, if you like your cinema experimental and edgy

Friday release| Kaalakaandi

SHARE

WRITTEN BY

Friday 12 January 2018 10:36 IST

Film : Kaalakaandi(Dark-Thriller)

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Akshay Oberoi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Neil Bhoopalam, Amyra Dastur, Deepak Dobriyal and Vijay Raaz

Direction: Akshat Verma

Duration: 1 hour, 52 minutes

Language: Hindi (U/A)

Story: Three stories take place simultaneously through the course of a night. The first centers around a man(Saif) who is diagnosed with cancer, the second track is that of a girl(Sobhita)who is involved in a hit-and-run and the third track revolves around a small-time gangster (Deepak) who gets involved in a murder.

Review: Writer-director Akshat Verma whose previous writing work in Delhi Belly(2011) won him accolades does a good job of writing this cinema noir. However he falters in the direction part because he is not able to control the pace needed for a thriller.

The highlight of this film is Saif. When he realises he has but a short time to live because he is terminally ill, he brings out his bucket-list. He wants to pack in all highs(including tripping on acid) and even agrees to go on a date with a transvestite. It is amazing to see how this white-collared serious kind-of guy, who has abstained from most minor vices loosens up. Seeing his track, one realises how fragile life is and how each of us must let go from time to time. Or die with regrets.

He also encourages his brother(Akshay) who is getting married to live it up for a few hours before he commits to a life-time of drudgery.

In another track, a student(Sobhita) who wants to give kamasutra lessons to boys other than her steady-date (Kunaal Roy Kapur) changes her whole outlook towards life after she gets involved in a hit and run accident and finds her boyfriend standing by her side like a rock. Realisation dawns that Kunaal can offer her a lifetime of love. And this emotion she knows is more important than the rainbow she has been chasing.

In the third track, Vijay and Deepak, two contract killers feel it is time for them to stop collecting and killing for their mafia boss. Instead they want to snatch the booty and promote themselves to the position of the don.

While Saif's track has all the ingredients of a good life lesson, the track involving Sobhita takes much too long to come to fruition. And the third track that uses the Bambiya Hindi and allows for a vantage view of Mumbai's underbelly has some laugh-out-loud moments, but the pace dips from time to time, making it a drag.

However, if you like your cinema experimental and edgy, give this one a try.

Critics Rating: 3/5

REVIEW: Humko bahut curiosity hai aapke saaman ke baare mein - how can you dislike a film, which has an A-list star saying that to a transvestite? My take on #Kaalakaandi:

'Kaalakaandi' movie review : Terrific performances by an ensemble star-cast makes it worth a watch!

Film : Kaalakaandi

Star Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Deepak Dobriyal,Vijay Raaz, Akshay Oberoi, Sobhita Dhulipala and Amyra Dastur,

Direcor: Akshat Verma

Duration: 1 hour, 52 minutes

Ratings: 3 stars

Starring Saif Ali Khan in a lead role, the movie's title is Marathi slang -- Kaala-Kaandi, which means, something that is not being done in the right manner or is horribly wrong. And as the title suggests, right from the first frame, we are reminded that nothing can go right for its characters.

The movie is one of the first releases of this year(2018) and is clashing at the box-office with Anurag Kashyap's 'Mukkabaaz' and horror flick '1921' starring Zareen Khan and Karan Kundra in a lead role.

The dark comedy Kaalakaandi is directed by debutante Akshat Verma who was the script-writer for 'Delly Belly'.

Set in the backdrop of Mumbai, with a variety of quirky, pseudo characters awake after midnight, it reflects the unpredictable life in the city.

REVIEW: The movie revolves around three parallel stories taking place on one rainy Mumbai night, interestingly none of the three stories are related to each other! The first one is about Rileen(Saif) a middle aged man who has never smoked or had alcohol in life but is sadly diagnosed with stomach cancer and has just a few months to live. The second track is that of a girl (Sobhita Dhulipala)who is involved in a hit-and-run case and the third track revolves around two small-time gangster duo Deepak Dobriyal and Vijay Raaz who gets involved in a murder.

Obviously, the highlight of this film is Saif Ali Khan and it won't be wrong to call this flick as one of his career best movie. You can so connect to Saif's character as when he realises that he has a short time to live because he is terminally ill, he brings out his bucket-list. He pops a pill( acid drug) goes on a date with a cross dresser, gets dressed in a hilarious manner at his brother's wedding and what not. Seeing his track, one realises how we should just live each and every moment of our live and just let go the worries and sorrows.

However I feel the real star of the movie is Deepak Dobriyal, the actor once again proves what a brilliant performer he is. Portraying the role of a small-time gangster in the movie, the actor effortlessly gets into the shoe of a Mumbai local. From 'Tanu Weds Manu' pappi ji to 'Kaalakaandi' no wonder the actor has come a long way.

The film also boasts of an ensemble star cast other than Saif and Deepak Dobriyal, and has supporting actors who completely fits in their character like- Vijay Raaz , Akshay Oberoi and Kunal Roy Kapur.

The girls in the film are all good and looks great on screen be it Isha Talwar, who plays Saif's love interest in the movie or Sobhita Dhulipala who plays a free-spirited woman. Actress Amyra Dastur who plays Akshay Oberoi fiance looks cute and beautiful in the film.

The background score especially the rain sound perfectly blends with the movie and makes the scene look more intense.

However the movie fails to deliver a strong message and leaves the film open-ended for the audience to understand. While the plot unravels like the pages of a thriller, the humour seems laboured.

Another disaster. 1.5 star review from Firstpost

Kaalakaandi movie review: Saif Ali Khan is funny as hell but the film lacks fizz

Anna MM Vetticad

1.5/5
  • Cast: Saif Ali Khan,Akshay Oberoi,Isha Talwar,Sobhita Dhulipala,Kunaal Roy Kapur,Shenaz Treasury,Vijay Raaz,Deepak Dobriyal,Amyra Dastur,Neil Bhoopalam

  • Director: Akshat Verma

When the writer of Delhi Belly announces his intent to direct, obviously there is reason enough to sit up and take notice.

That film released seven long years back, produced by Aamir Khan and directed by Abhinay Deo was an excellent black comedy that pushed the envelope in the genre more than most Hindi filmmakers had for decades before that or have since. Its writing, direction and casting were in sync with each other. Kaalakaandi gets one element right: its cast. But though Saif Ali Khan is funny as hell here and several of his talented co-stars show spark, the writing does not give any of them enough substance to bite into and the film does not fully take off at any point.

Khan plays a man who has just discovered that he has stomach cancer and barely a few months to live. He is shocked at the diagnosis because he has lived what he considers a clean and healthy life. Read: no smoking, no drinking, no drugs, no fooling around. Since his family is celebrating a wedding when the doctor breaks the news to him, he decides to keep it to himself but also to live it up since he now has nothing to lose. His bizarre transformation confuses the groom (Akshay Oberoi) who, in any case, is coping with his own set of problems arising from pre-marital heebie-jeebies.

In the same city lives a young couple on the verge of parting ways since she (Sobhita Dhulipala) is leaving him (Kunaal Roy Kapur) while she heads off to the US for a PhD. With just hours to go for her flight they attend the birthday party of a close friend (played with aplomb by Shenaz Treasury).

What seems like light years away from their swish lifestyles, a notorious gangster's sidekicks (Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal) are dealing with dilemmas of their own.

During the course of the film, the paths of these disparate characters cross in the most fleeting fashion, resulting in dramatic consequences for all of them.

Kaalakaandi (which, I have learnt from one of Khan's pre-release interviews, means "gadbad or "everything going wrong") is about karma taking over as we make other plans and the importance of occasionally surrendering to fate. Verma has an interesting enough concept in place here and has picked just the right bunch of artistes to get where he wants to go. The opening half hour offers plenty of Saif-Ali-Khan-induced laughter and zaniness to hold out the promise of more to come.

Sadly, the rest of the film does not live up to this potential, since it is neither madcap enough nor pacey enough nor raunchy enough nor witty enough nor shocking enough nor clever enough nor gutsy enough nor experimental enough to have the effect that it seems to be aiming for.

Verma's inability to flesh out his basic idea for Kaalakaandi is particularly unfortunate because Khan is in his element here.

In film after film, this actor has shown that he has the chops to pull off pretty much every genre, but his industry is not offering him projects to match. He was sweetly likeable in Chef last year and beautifully melded amorality with heart in Rangoon just months earlier. In Kaalakaandi, he lets his hair down wonderfully as he descends into nuttiness, but the script is too frail to give him the space to spread his wings.

That said, the writing of the thread about his character is the only one with enough substance and life to keep this film going. The highlight of Kaalakaandi is his encounter with a transgender sex worker played by a luminous Nary Singh. The easy blend of light-heartedness and poignance in their interaction marks an important milestone for the portrayal of the trans community by Bollywood.

In the sensitivity Verma seemingly effortlessly combines with humour in that one episode, he proves that he has what it takes to be a director. If only he had spent more time on his script, it may have occurred to him that the strand involving Khan could have been a standalone venture.

The rest of Kaalakaandi is dead before it takes birth. Getting Oberoi to say "f**k a few times, infusing Raaz and Dobriyal's segment with ma-behen abuses, showing a naked woman covered in a sheet and throwing her lingerie at a horny lover or injecting a heavy dose of drugs into the plot doth not a black comedy make.

Each member of the cast has provided ample evidence of being a gifted performer in earlier works. Vijay Raaz was the heart and soul of Delhi Belly and Kunaal Roy Kapur was a hoot in the same film. We know from the Tanu Weds Manu films that Deepak Dobriyal is a killer comic. The good-looking Akshay Oberoi is just emerging from the brilliance of Gurgaon last year. Sobhita Dhulipala who is a hottie made a smashing debut in Anurag Kashyap's Raman Raghav 2.0 in 2016. Yet in Kaalakaandi, when they are occasionally engaging, it feels more like a factor of their natural charisma than the writing of their respective characters. And then there is the usually exceptional Neil Bhoopalam who has zero impact in a pointless cameo here.

Besides, the timeline is inexplicable. The events in Kaalakaandi happen over one night, yet everything seems to take much longer than it possibly could in reality. The young couple, for instance, pack so much into the two hours before her flight that you have to wonder what clock they are operating on. This loose writing deprives the film of the compactness it should have had considering that its 111 minutes and 54 seconds is far less than the average Bollywood length.

It is hard to believe that a film directed by the writer of Delhi Belly is, for the most part, a drag. Despite Saif Ali Khan being in cracking form, Kaalakaandi lacks fizz and purpose.

Kaalakaandi Movie Review: A Whacky Ride

Akshat Verma shot to fame overnight when Delhi Belly, which was written by him, became a major success and catapulted him to the big league. Little wonder that Verma decided to raise the stakes and try his hand at direction with Kaalakaandi. But does this film, which features three separate stories, prove to be as entertaining and quirky as Delhi Belly? kaal-2A sober banker (Saif Ali Khan) is told that he has stomach cancer and a few months to leave and this pushes him over the edge, leading to an encounter with LSD and whacky adventures on a rain-slicked night in Mumbai. Meanwhile, his sibling Angad (Akshay Oberoi), who is about to tie the knot, has been offered a night of unbridled passion by a firang' ex-girlfriend, leading to further complications. kaal-3In another part of the city, a woman and her boyfriend (Sobhita Dhulipala and Kunaal Roy Kapur) decide to attend a pal's birthday party before the former's flight to the US and end up being embroiled in a drug bust and a wild chase ending in a tragedy. kaal-4In yet another corner of the metropolis, two small-time hoodlums (Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal) plan to double-cross their boss and make away with a score big enough to set them up for life. kaal-5Saif Ali Khan, who has impressed us with his performance in films such as Ek Hasina Thi, Omkara and Being Cyrus, delivers a solid performance as the staid banker, who decides to let his hair down and the scenes between him and transgender commercial sex worker Sheela (Nary Singh) are the highlights of his portion of the film. Saif is outrageous and vulnerable in equal measures and it is fun to watch him goof around. Akshay and Isha Talwar are decent enough and provide able support to the story. kaal-6In the second story, Shobhita, Kunaal and Shenaz Treasurywala have performed well while Shivam Patil(last seen in Ghayal Once Again) is a pleasant surprise. Vijay Raaz and Deepak are too good in their roles as hoodlums planning to pull off a big score and their banter is sure to provoke quite a few chuckles. kaal-8As for the film itself, Kaalakaandi is a very niche and what is called a meant for a multiplex audience' film. The special effects, the background score and other technical aspects are quite effective and the film is a fun and whacky ride for sure. Granted that the film may not be as entertaining as Delhi Belly, but Kaalakaandi does have its moments. The dialogues, though mostly in English, are quite relatable and contemporary. kaal-9On the flip side, the climax of the film comes across as quite abrupt and far-fetched, which may not go down well with many viewers. However, all said and done, if whacky films are your drug of choice, Kaalakaandi will guarantee a good trip'.
