Prologue

Three Great Emperors had toiled hard to build the vast and flourishing legacy of the 'Mughal Empire', keeping relative peace by unifying its Mughals and Hindus. However; by mid 1600s, cracks began to appear in its solid foundations. Insecurities crept in through the gaps, widening the gulfs between the two religions once again.

With the old Emperor becoming too feeble to take charge and his jealous successors remaining preoccupied with expansion and power, the damage was never repaired. Not surprising then that new rebellions arose every day. Violence escalated, claiming many innocent lives.

Yet; in the midst of such turmoil and peril, there bloomed a beautiful story - much like a lone flower blossoming upon the steepest edges of a cliff - a story of love, of sacrifice and honour!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Forced to flee from her motherland, the one home she knew... forced to leave behind her people, for whom, she was their only hope...forced to grievously abandon the last rites of her loved one while the flames on the pyre were still ablaze...the orphaned heiress of 16 overcame grief and many shortcomings, as she embarked on a long dangerous path... setting out to seek help and support, for her people and her lands...

Till a chance stay with a complete stranger would change the course of those very plans forever!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Being the most shrewd, determined and unforgiving of the lot meant he was formidable... a force to be reckoned with... it also meant he could have owned it all - riches, power, women and fame... but, he fancied none of it...

As a recluse with simple tastes, the rich life held no real appeal... power didn't tempt him... women didn't interest him... his passion was work and his only family were a few loyal friends... he had decided that he wanted little else in life...

Till a chance visit from a complete stranger would change that decision forever!

Writer-e-khaas,

As we had discussed, here I am with my "suda suda", fresh-off-the press take, just in time for your breakfast in three courses. If one eats chaat, paneer, and dessert for breakfast, but why not?

(1) The Chatpata Chaat: My instant reaction to the teaser for Chapter 43

My first reaction was "Poor Akbar." Here he is thinking that Harka may be spying and not trusting him, when the truth is anything but that. She now seems to understands him more than ever and wants to reach out to the hurt man under the tough exterior. It also shows how a mind of a spy can be biased in a certain way; because while he was able to read her tears, he could not read what was behind them. Further, there were enough distractions from the unfolding suspense, whether it was Azeez or Harka asking about the letter to her messengers. Now, when will our suspense and Akbar's be cleared?

As always, your Teaser does a great job keeping us on our toes.

(2) Moving on to the main entree: Take for Chapter 42

As we get excited with the Teaser for Chapter 43, let me not forget to share how I enjoyed Chapter 42.

What I felt throughtout the chapter, was "a grazing of the surface", where you could almost feel the touch but not the depth behind it- at least not quite yet.

(a) Harka could only "graze the surface" of Akbar's rough warrior form with her binoculars, it would take a bit longer to find out the injured heart behind that shining vest of strength.

(b) What Harka did from a distance, Akbar did from close quarters. Without a touch, he managed to "graze the surface" of the emotions and passions pent up between both of them. (And there were two interesting writing concepts I liked here- one was the analogy to the "games" and "dice" they both represented and Harka's observation that Akbar could pull two lovers apart, even when one of them was himself.)

(c) Harka began to "graze the surface" of her only true misgiving against Akbar: that he was loyal to the Shehzaade of all people. Now that it was out on the open, it was up to Akbar to answer but the complexities of his past remained tangled.

(d) As even Akbar would only "graze the surface" of his loyalties to his Shehzaade; his words stopped short, only to be completed by Chachajaan later (I can't wait for this portion Writer-e-khaas!; I really liked the early glimpse of it that you provided.)

(e) And the parting prayer and reassuring smile only would "graze the surface" of how much Akbar and Harka felt for each other's well-being and peace of mind. The teaser for 43 seems to suggest that this will reach further depths very soon.

I felt the way Chapter 42 was written was very unique- as everything intentionally stayed away from the depth that was about to unfold - the whole chapter lingered on the touch that never came. Will it come in Chapter 43? We shall all know hopefully shortly.

And so, what's left after the take for Chapter 42? An experiment of mine- which is typically desserts.

(3) The last course of dessert: you can choose the sweet of your choice here; but this is more of how your writing is such as inspiration and comes to life everywhere.

As I was listening to the "Ghoomar" song from Padmavati, I also was immediately drawn to the word "Bhaisa" just like you were. I also was drawn to a regal woman, sitting with high stature amidst them all. I immediately thought of Harka sitting in the midst, watching the dance with her head held high. And then I wondered, what if it was Akbar that was looking down at Harka instead of Shahid from the top. So, inspired by HBAS I wrote this OS about how for the first time Akbar doesn't feel like going on his mission. And from the teaser from 43, he may be actually kept away from his mission. So, here is the OS:

"A sound eminated. A sound that stopped him in his tracks. Was it a calling from within? It very well could have been.

"Bhaisa" echoed through in cheerful chorus. A heartfelt celebration for his "Bhaisa". His Sahiba.

His feet held him back. Even as he knew that he couldn't afford a moment's halt. His mind battled his heart. A lapse from him and he could lose the lead on his next mission. Something he could not afford to do.

But, something tugged him back. Was it that they were celebrating his Sahiba's favorite festival as a child? Was it that she was shining with his wedding gift adorned on her neck? Was it that he could not even imagine that smile disappear with news he had departed without a word?

How could a minute for himself do any harm? He could afford a view of the courtyard from the top passage before he slowly made his way out. The temptation won out.

And there she was. In her full splendor, sparkling smile, diamonds, and all. Her eyes were dancing along with the women twirling to the "ghoomar" song. And there she was in the middle with her head high as their beloved bhaisa and leader.

As his feet began to turn away from the revelry, Bindiya's mischief forced him back. Bindiya managed to pull an unwilling Harka into their midst. And despite all her protests, Harka joined them for a twirl. He knew she did so for their happiness. As her smile widened, as company, joined a little twirl of hair on her face. The same small set of stands that had challenged his own self control not too long ago. And they were threatening to do so again.

Suddenly, he shook himself. What had come over him? For the first time. For the first time, he let himself get distracted from a mission. A mission for the Shehzaade. What had come over him? What was this new feeling rising within him? Perhaps, a rising tide he himself could not keep at bay. He would have to. With an impatient nudge, he departed and was on his way."

So that was an experimental OS- an HBAs attempt in my writing style.

And there we go! That was the promised three course meal. I hope you enjoyed it Writer-e-khaas :)

C 43 THE LOTUS AND THE LILY

The journey of the lotus does not begin in the open air,but in the water below. As a bud,it is submerged in water that is not the most pleasant of environments. When the time comes for it to flower, the bud pushes resolutely past the unpleasantness and turns into its royal self much like AMK who has turned himself from nothing to something so complete.

Just like the lotus flower which blooms from a rather unremarkable bud to a flower that is resplendent in the glory of its multi symmetrical open form the ill little boy has turned himself to the multi symmetric (patient, mystic, apparently empty from desires but loving and compassionate, faithful )Ustad, has kept himself untainted like the core of the lotus despite the environment in which he began his journey.

The opening of the petals of the lotus in succession to reveal the magnificient yellowish green circular mass of stigmas can be used as a metaphor to describe Chachajan taking Heera on the journey of "THE MAKING OF THE USTAD.

Heera on the other hand took a royal stance and embraced her own power by remembering that renewal was just around the corner bringing in images of the LILY which with it's elegant look, strength and beauty is commonly considered to mean royalty, purity, passion and renewal.

A lily not only speaks of ambition and encouragement with a difficult challenge it also symbolizes healing and passion.

"HE FASTENED HER PALM TO THE TOP OF HIS CHEST UNABASHED,SINCE SHE WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO COULD TEND TO ITS UNSTOPPABLE BEATS

C43 my viewpoint
Private meeting chamber
The Chapter started with Chachajaan's revelation of AMK's painful young life. I was doing a fast read here to find where the C42 portion ends & the newer part of the chapter starts. Even though we knew a lot more of AMK's past than Heera did still the impact for me the reader was no less traumatic than it was for Heera. With her we also felt the horror of AMK's ! 'Abandonment... abuse... blame... isolation...etc . When she finds out how through all this his innate goodness' came through & whom he turned out to be, her mind then reaches out & bonds with the '12 year old boy' AMK & resolves to wipe the slate clean of any past haunting & unhapiness of his young life. It was gut wrenching to read that saga.
Her nightmare/epiphany portion was presented to us so well that we too get sucked into those dark, deep caverns with them & come out of it as if it was some sort of a sinister roller coaster ride. Amongst other emotions while reading this portion is that you made us do a mental salam' to the Shehzaade for his part in lifting that boy out of misery & eventually molding him to become the CIO despite us knowing how the tables could/would likely turn out later.
Elsewhere... at a desolate marshland near Aidabad
The escape of the messenger thrown amidst of the happenings at the Parnagarh haveli now has shed us a clear light on why AMK had to take that decision to have them eliminated. At the time when AMK discussed it with Heera the full brunt of it could not be felt until I was reading the escaped messengers resolve to let the Kunwar know of AMK's actions & what repercussions this could have now for not just AMK & Heera but the whole of Parnagarh. 😲
The Stables / The hideout
The little tete-e-tete that goes on between AMK & Azeez brings to light how much strain & secrecy all their undercover work involves. The way you described the night with two men holed up in a dingy secret room makes it feel as if we are intruding on their hideout & also trying to dodge those scrolls being thrown at azeez.
The Mansabdar's chamber
Now we are back in the chamber where we were left at the end of the teaser. With AMK's apprehensive entry we also get prepared to see his agitation surface & hold our breath while Heera regains her composure & clears the air with a few almost defiant exchanges with honesty but with pride'. How well you portray her strong demeanor & convey her stance.
Then comes the critical stage' of this chapter where Heera is determined to let AMK know that she has learnt his torrid past & has accepted Ustaad'.
At this point of the chapter I was literally having a one sided conversation with Heera asking her not to agitate him, to be calm & back off from detaining him. After AMK listened to her events of the scroll mishap he very clearly stated & also shown her by putting on the riding scarf, gloves & dagger belt that he was determined to leave on his short mission with no further delay. But Heera goes on with resolve & ignores his now sober refusal to hear her out at this time. She does not only verbally but also physically tries to restrain him by holding his elbow . When I read the part where she starts with a shaky but clear voice Ustad Akbar... it hit home for me of her no return stage she is entering into. Then the rest of her confession starts & with every what MORE do you want to hear she strips away his well guarded horror & even asks him if he wants to hear more & ultimately submits herself with a simple but profound " Yes your Heera loves you like no other. If that was not enough what she says next gets me floored & clears the big why she chose to confess then & there.
The precious chain of confessions snapped under the strain, breaking down into droplets of tears 'I did not intend to upset you or delay you, Khan Sahib... I could have said all this on another day... but with both of us leading lives where we don't know what tomorrow holds, I did not want to leave these unsaid as you depart on another mission'
The bold part highlights their current predicament of having to live their life always on the edge. Next portion that gripped me was the blades coming off' for AMK & how it was both painful & euphoric for him to go through those moments. Kudos author sahiba for taking us through all these emotions & at the end you held out the pot of honey for us. With every step he took towards her & the accessories that he took off while doing so that honey pot was being lowered to our hands reach. To hear his confession out loud in just two ... well three words if you count her name was a pure bliss for us to read. It was not their first intimate moment but the way you laid it out to us we were glad we took your warning to make sure the update was read in solitude.
Lovely ending of the chapter with Heera's discovery of her effect over her sahib & with the awakening to the power of her womanhood. Where doubts, sadness & tears resided it gives us hope that it will now begin to be replaced with complete trust & happiness. Their new found untainted love for each other signals the union of their mind & soul where the body is only a means for it.
Thank you Lashy for this blissful journey to travel with the leads in their turmoils, trials, tribulations & triumps. We can be sure that more twists & turns are waiting for the leads & us to endure. Until that last drop of honey is done we will be buzzing around in a HBAS daze. Oh how I wish it was an akshaya patram !
