Priyanka Chopra has recently delivered a speech at a literary event organised by a publishing company, however people have questioned her credibility and stated that there were various authors who could have been selected for this honored position.

As soon as the decision for her selection to speak at the event was revealed, people reportedly started questioning her credibility on social media. Bombay Times reveals that at the event, Chopra spoke about many topics ranging from issues around women, actors, and race. The actor also spoke about wage disparity in the film industry and racism to sexual harassment, the #MeToo movement and marriage.

Published poet Sharanya Manivannan said, "A publishing house came up with a thread on Twitter listing just a few possible names who could have filled this spot, and I have to agree with it. She went onto say that, "This has nothing to do with Priyanka Chopra, the person, or her abilities, or even for that matter the fact that she doesn't even have a book ghost-written to her credit yet. It's just that it seems like they were aware they'd made an oversight by inviting only men so far, so even if any woman would be a "token woman, they could have made that choice more thoughtfully. They could pick someone whose ideas have a connection to publishing, readers and authors.

Author Kiran Manral added, "They wanted to grab as much attention as possible. And they did so by inviting Priyanka Chopra. Manral blamed the audience for giving Chopra such a platform. "In India, we weigh a lot of importance in two things: Bollywood and cricket. And it doesn't come as a surprise to me that people would rather listen to her than anyone else, she said.

Both sides have a point. Though PC did somewhat talk about relevant general topics, why invite an actor to a literary event? It is true that it could have limited literary discussion. What do you all think? Do you agree?

I concur with the lady in this context. Surely it's an honour for PC to deliver a lecture at a prestigious literary event. But the organisers' selection might not appeal to many associated with the literary circuit and the audience in general.

PC is an articulate speaker, a big star and an inspiring role model. But merely that doesn't qualify her as a guest speaker at a major literary annual event held by a noted publishing house. This particular event has been graced by many eminent (male) speakers from all over the world so far. Even if they want to bring in a female representative this time there are many capable women authors/writers and from the publishing industry too.

So why would a publishing house choose an actor instead of a writer or a publishing professional to deliver the lecture? Is she the right choice for an out-and-out literary event? They probably wanted to make it more commercialised and grab more eyeballs and promote their business.

Priyanka isn't the first actor to speak here, Amitabh Bachchan has spoken here too. But of course people have to make an issue out of it just because it's Priyanka. So glad she went back to the US. India is annoying af.

PC is amazing. I think all these authors could learn a thing or two from her. She is doing amazing as an actor and shuttling between two continents so she wouldn't have time but if she did, am sure she can write better than these losers. They should be happy she took time out of her busy schedule to bless them with her coveted presence. How dare anyone say a word against her. Annoying and pathetic country. I hope PC soon becomes a USC and then she can probably take over Trump and put annoying Indians in place. Go PC 🥳

Nowhere does it say you have to be a graduate to speak at this event. A lot of the most successful people in the world aren't graduates. The event is done and over, Priyanka did a great job. Still people make an issue out of nothing. Penguin got the housefull event they wanted and a lot of publicity. The lecture was pretty good too. If Priyanka didn't accomplish anything in her life or wasn't a good speaker I would understand. In a country where Alia Bhatt speaks at World Economic Forum or SRK hosts TedTalks people have a problem with this of all things! LOL

Firstly it was not at all aimed at PC. I addressed the core issue here irrespective of which star is being part of it. The penguin event so far has been spearheaded by eminent personalities such as Dalai lama, Dr abdul kalam, Amarthya sen, Amitabh, Ramachandra guhe and the likes. Where does PC fit in? And the 1st time they bring in a woman who has nothing to do with the publishing industry. The literary world has loads of capable women candidates. Basically it's not PC vs 'other women/star' issue. And nobody takes away her credibility as an accomplished actress. The question is 'is she the right choice for a pure literary event organised by a reputed publishing house? '. Your last line is absolutely silly, even PC wouldn't approve of.

PS - Amitabh is widely regarded as a distinguished litterateur. Son of a very well known poet. He has taken part in many events and discussed his father's work as well as other literature. A voracious reader and writer.
