Vidya Balan has always been vocal about her
opinions and has never shied away in
putting her views out in open. At an event,
she talked about the ongoing debate over
playing the national anthem in public
places.
Vidya said, "I don't think the National
Anthem should be played before the films.
You are not in school where you start the
day with the National Anthem. So I'm
personally of the opinion that the National
Anthem should not be played. You cannot
force patriotism. But I don't need to be told.
When I hear the National Anthem, I stand up
wherever I am."
Vidya, who is gearing up for Tumhari Sullu,
was also in headlines after she was
appointed as the member of the Central
Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
On these lines, she said, "The entire film
industry was feeling a certain way with the
previous censor board. And then, when I
was asked whether I'd be able to be on the
censor board, I thought this as an
opportunity to bring about change."
"So, unless I agree to be part of that change
or at least attempt to be part of it, I can't
criticise it anymore. Which is why I said ok'.
I don't want to give it a particular tag and
say Sanskari, Un-sanskari, forward," she
added.
"Once the CBFC has cleared the film, it should
be allowed to be seen the way it has been
cleared. If there are any issues, they should
have been brought up before," she said and
signed off.

Never understood the logic of playing national anthem in cinemas. Can anyone explain logic behind it.
It will be more appropriate to show a 30sec or 1 min clip of hardsips soldiers face at border so that civilians can go to cinemas and enjoy.

The national anthem used to be played in cinema halls across India, once upon a time, but the practice faded away. In 2002, Narendra Verma of the Nationalist Congress Party lobbied and got the Maharashtra government to order cinema halls to do it again. Mr Verma's logic was that it would help unite people.

It did wonders as we are finally united, when someone doesnt stand up in theatre even if he is diasabled we come together and beat em up.

I feel really weird to stand up for National anthem in a cinema hall.
Imagine going to watch movies like Grand Masti or Hate Story, and then standing up for National anthem before watching the movie.😆

It makes the National Anthem cheap.

My mom has knee pains, and whenever we'd go watch movies, we had to stand up and she used to feel so much pain to stand up immediately or soon after sitting..

I personally feel divided on this issue though... play hoga, toh I'll stand up.. Neither for nor against.. but seeing my mom's problem, she stands up out of fear and not whole-heartedly, there must be others with similar inconveniences, so is that a right thing?

I agree with Justice Chandrachud(if I remember correctly) who has recently questioned the logic behind 'forcing' spirit of nationalism.. It is something to think about..

OH yes, my mom did wait outside last time we went but didn't like walking in and finding her way in the dark.. we're kind of 'religious' about our movie watching experience 🤓 ..Always ahead of time and the last ones to leave :/

IDK yaar, we go out of our way to avoid fussy situations :p ..and you never know what kind of person may pounce on you...
