Do stars get excessive importance in India?

Especially Indian media.
Everyone loves movies, TV, music but don't stars get way more importance than what they might deserve?

I mean using stars in even serious issues? Or making them face of prime time debate?

I remember few years ago a star had done movies on kids and education system, learning disabilities and due to success of that film people started inviting him at summits on education, pedagogy, mental health, parenting as a panelist! Though he was not qualified to speak on these heavyweight topics and merely ended up repeating dialogues of his film at whatever conference he went to.

When a star does a movie on sports or terrorism or communalism, he or she suddenly gets invited as a panelist on even serious debates on such issues. Is it fair?

I mean how can a star be expert on counter terrorism, communal issues or policies regarding sports?

These days even filmmakers get invited on serious debates and conferences on counter terror, national security type heavy weight issues. They usually rant loudly, shout but say nothing of value.

It is fine to love stars but how much is too much? Where does media and country draw the line?

A lot of stars have little idea of issues they try to latch on to. Often they do it for publicity, image makeover. They sometimes slip up and talk absolute nonsense on very contentious, sensitive issues.
Or wash off hands altogether from an issue after taking it up for a while.

Why doesn't Indian media draw the line? And how fair is it to get stars, singers or directors to rant on topics they are not qualified enough to speak on? That too at events, conferences or on national TV?

Education, politics, literature, medicine, healthcare, there is not a single department where celebs have not infiltrated or ranted.

As fans do you give importance to your fav stars and latch on to each word even if he or she speaks on heavyweight issues like national security? Is it stars who cross limits and try to spread themselves too thin speaking or appearing at all sorts of fora or is it various organizations also to blame for getting celebs on any platform (whether they are qualified for it or not)?

Finally do you think celeb involved in any issue contributes to it or dumbs it down and makes it hard to take anything seriously? (no offense but I find certain actors turned ministers a second hand embarrassment and also find standard of debate lowered with such persons at helm).

Should celebs stick to their craft and dabble in other issues, speak on other platform only if they are actually interested and well prepared and know what they are getting into?

Any public personality carries a sense of importance.
Their words will be taken very seriously.
And If a film is made on social issues, the assumption is that the actors know about the issue and since they are popular , they will be made the faces of certain idea or campaign.

Also bringing a popular face, increases the viewership and credibility of a certain cause.

I personally don't take actor's words seriously.

Only actors I take seriously are Amitabh Bachchan and Sharukh Khan because I feel they know more about the outside world as compared to their peers.

People listen when stars say something important, that's why different organizations invite them to give speech.

Celebs are invited in Prime time debates on national television, because News channels like any other Entertainment channel just want to rake high trps, instead of showing any real debate or news.
Celebs bring alot of credibility and attention to any event or campaign. Even if they have zilch knowledge about the issue and just spouting nonsense, still audience will like to hear them, because well, they are popular.
Not the media, it's the general public who needs to be blamed, for giving these celebs so much importance. Being a fan is fine, praising and appreciating their work is also fine. But the audience starts seeing these celebs as the epitome of perfection, try to draw parallels between their reel and real life characters, and expects them to have the knowledge about anything and everything. This is what is the problem!!!

Media expects the celebs to have views on politics, education etc. because the audience expects it. It's just the case of demand and supply. Doesn't matters if these celebs haven't even passed the high school, and don't even know the definition of feminism, which you can find with a simple Google search!!!

The thing is that films/TV or for that matter anything related to a visual medium will expose a person to more people than a desk job person who no one has visual access to. And with the kind of entertainment deprived country India is, there are only a very few options available -- like movies and cricket. And hence, of course, they have a large audience and a wide reach.
Now that makes these people really popular amongst their countrymen. And of course, if you add the privileges these people have in terms of money, power, luxury, connections .. it is almost like a fairytale that other people don't even bother imagining for themselves because it is too much.
So, when there are so many people ready to watch these stars speak, then of course the news channels (who are always killing and dying for TRPs) use the stars' presence to their advantage and hence, ask for an opinion on the gravest and the most serious of the concerns.
I agree that these stars, most of whom are so narcissistic and all about their luxuries that they probably don't even want to know nothing about anyone other than themselves, should not be expected to give a soundbite on everything. For that matter, why should we even be bothered about their opinions when they are probably the most protected and least affected of the major social issues.
