Every movie out there has alternate revenue streams to recover the budget - streaming, TV, theatrical, music etc. But none of it HELPS THE DISCUSSION!

Because determining the profitability of a movie is not based on whether the producers recovered their money. A lot of times producers sell their movie to distributors for a profit, and as you mentioned they have alternate revenues as well. So they're sitting pretty in terms of recovering their investments. But what about the distributors and exhibitors if no one shows up to the theaters to watch the movie? your model works only if the producers are releasing their own movie and no distributors are involved. Even then, when a movie is shown in the theaters, half the income goes to the theater owners. So a simple recovery of budget doesn't mean a movie is a hit.

Sheesh! Ppl really need to stop measuring how good a film is by its box office run. What's more important is whether you like it or not.

There are many people involved in the chain though.

Producer invests money in the actual making of the movie. He then sells theatrical rights, satellite rights, music rights and so on and mostly makes his money back, especially if big stars are involved. Because distributors and others buy rights depending on star face value. These days most producers make their money back through all these avenues.

Distributors buy theatrical rights for the movie. They then have to pay tax on revenue from ticket sales and also pay the exhibitors or the theater owners a cut. Usually this cut is different for multiplexes and single screens and changes week to week, but on average, the distributor gets to keep about half the ticket sales income after tax. So if he bought a movie for 100 cr the movie needs to make 200 cr for him to break even.

If you look at just producer breaking even then all movies are hit. But I do agree with you that in north India, the box office is not at all transparent. In the south, the websites usually show you the pre-release business, how much a movie was sold for, how much is the distributor share after release so you can see the profit/loss all through the chain. Where as BOI and other Bollywood websites almost never disclose distributor costs. They probably don't know and theyre just guessing most of the time.

@Mimi - I understand what you are saying about distribution break even point I just have trouble believing distributors are staying in business if they are truly losing so much money. I think either the moves are selling at much lower costs than we think, they are somehow getting profits from some other source, or there is some other thing (possibly illegal) happening.
