NIT KHAIR MANGA
It's been six months since you are gone and there was not even a single day when I didn't remember you, Advay. I miss you so much."
She pressed his photo close to her chest and cried hard as she did every day. Keeping aside the photo, she went to the small mandir in her room and prayed religiously. She was disturbed by the shrill cry of the baby who threw his hands in air to grab his mother's attention. Smilingly, Chandini picked up her 10 months old son Garv from the cradle and cooed him in her arms. Resting his head on her right shoulder, she treaded in the room singing him a lullaby at the same time patting his back to put him to sleep. Putting him back in the cot, she went to the wall where the calendar hanged. Taking a red marker, she crossed another date on it. She moved towards the wardrobe and took out one of his shirts. Chandini wore the shirt and went near the dressing table to apply the perfume he used. She smelled herself and felt tantalizing. She hugged herself as if embracing him and lost herself in the warmth of his shirt. She pulled the blank canvas and splashing some colours painted his portrait. Just another of his amongst the huge collection. Tracing her hand on his face, as if touching him, a lone tear escaped her eyes as she said
"Our son said his first word yesterday and you know he told 'Daddd...Daddda'. How cute he looked when he was trying to call out your name! His has a deep voice like you. I have recorded his voice and pinned to our baby diary. You know what an important moment it was. How I wish you could be here and together we would have rejoiced these moments. The other days I am really strong but such first acts of our baby makes me really emotional and weak."
Wiping her tears, she smoothed the bed and moved to his side to experience another sleepless night of her life. She usually woke up to her alarm at 7 am but these days she would consider herself lucky if she rose to her alarm as mostly she would be up hearing the wails of her baby boy. She brushed her teeth and by the time she exited the bathrom, the devil was already awake and searched for his mother. Garv saw Chandini as she neared him and expressed his delight throwing his chubby hands up. She dressed him up cutely and placing him in the baby supporter headed out to their routine morning walk. The mother son duo walked through the park as she kept at nodding and smiling to the neighbours. Some girls pulled Garv's cheeks and kissed it. He made a yuck face and wiped while she chuckled. Some tried to take him in their arms but he wrapped his hand around his mother's neck and clunged tightly. She reached home and her kitchen was filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Chandini sat on the sofa breast feeding Garv and had her beverage.
Her hands shivered to touch the TV Remote but taking a deep breath she switched on the TV. "Don't panic bhole ke sainik" saying this she flipped to the news channel which was telecasting the breaking headlines.
'Another officer dies due to faulty parts in the BAF's new aircraft.'
'Is the government sleeping?'
Her heart beated wildly hearing the news. "Another death" she whispered and shut her eyes tight. She didn't have the guts to hear the officer's name but she had to like every day. This was her daily routine since past 1 week as the death toll of BAF officers were on rise due to manufacturing defects. She opened her eyes and saw the photo of the pilot. She sighed in relief but sincerely prayed to God to give his family the strength to cope up the loss. Running to the temple in the hall, she profusely thanked her Shivji. Later that day, she was preparing Garv's cereals simultaneously kept a watch on him too. He was crawling on the floor with his toy plane. Like father like son, she shook her head. After a while, when she gazed at him the spoon fell from her hand and eyes twinkled with joy. She saw Garv trying to stand up taking the support of the sofa which was his new stunt nowadays as he was learning to stand. But what came as shock was when he tried to take his first step. Running towards him, she caught his right hand and steadied him.
Tears flowed from her eyes as she recalled how Advay and she had dreamt the first step of their baby. They would hold his hands and make him walk. Suddenly, she saw a hand catching Garv's left hand and balancing him. Smiling, she moved her eyes up to see the handsome man dressed in white uniform. There he stood Squadron Leader Advay Singh Raizada with a boyish grin on his face. Even at the age of 26 and being married and father of a son he didn't lose his charm. Afterall, uniformed men are born handsome and it was his sexy uniform that grabbed her attention when they first met. She had gone for trekking when she lost her balance and rolled down in the woods. It was him who had saved her and boy it was love at first sight for them and the rest is history.
She beamed through her tears and then they both lives their dream. The home echoed with the sounds of their laughter as they enjoyed family time after a long time. Advay took Garv in his arms and cuddled up with him tightly. Tears shined at the corner of his eyes and she held it before it touched his cheeks. He pulled her in a family hug and kissed their foreheads. Advay pointed at his flaps and left corner of his uniform making her gasp. She touched those medals and her heart swelled in pride as he added another feather in his cap
