CHAPTER 41

Its been 20 years since that day. Sorry dairy.. I don't come here much. I spent most of my free time near Jodha's grave. I shifted to Jodha's room. I feel her presence near me many times... Like her soul is taking care of me. I had never thought about any other woman since Jodha came into my life. I love you so much Jodha. Even if not a big life, I enjoyed a great life with her. Those three months with her were the best moments of my life. She gave me so many beautiful memories to cherish upon.
Salim too loves his mother. I used to tell him about Jodha. Now he is a great person. He has been married to noor jahan 3 months ago. You know.. My words are rules for my Salim. I crowned him as the shehensha a month ago. Am free from all responsibilities.
Now I just wait for death to take me to my Jodha & I hope God will give me another chance to love her. To cherish a love filled life. To be with her all my life.

Rest of the pages of the diary was blank. He never wrote again after that day. Her mind drifted to the events of the day. Maybe she should talk to Jalal. Just talk.

She drove to Khan Mansion. It was midnight, still the guards didn't stop her. She entered his room and found him staring at the ceiling. He glanced at her..

"I was waiting for you." He smiled. She sat beside him confused. He put his head on her lap. Capturing her waist into his hands, he pressed his face into her stomach... basking in the joy of her warmth.

He continued "Why did this happen to me.. to us. I know you will never forgive me Jodha. I am the last person whom you will love. How will I survive this truth. Last time atleast I had Salim. I had a purpose.. purpose of fulfilling my promise that I gave you. But this time... I will definitely die."

Tears made there way down his cheeks. "Maybe I could have avoided it. Its all my fault. I knew that my punishment wasn't over... I know I gave up.. but I wasn't able to endure it any more. I fulfilled my promise which I made to you. I gave Salim all the happiness of the world. I made him self-sufficient and made sure that he won't face any difficulty after me. I waited 20 years.. But probably the sin I committed wasn't paid for. I know I destroyed you but I swear I didn't do that on purpose. I was drunk. I.. I am sorry. I really am. I loved you. I can never hurt you knowingly. I know I am a monster and I punished myself in all possible ways but I couldn't bear it anymore. I shouldn't have ended it so simply. I deserved worse. It shouldn't have been as simple as poison."

If her heart cried till now for his pain.. for their pain. Her mind exploded perceiving his last sentence. He drank poison.. he committed suicide. He had been through so much pain.

She caressed his head to lend him her support. He was in too much pain. She will do everything in her power to lessen it even if it meant letting go of her ego and stepping down to lift him up. He needs her. And she is there with him.. for him.

One more realisation dawned upon her. He thought that he was dreaming about her coming to him. He assumed her to be his imagination. And he wasn't surprised at such an imagination.. that means he dreams of her coming to him often. She smiled and caressed his hair.

"Don't leave me please. Not today.. Don't go." he pleaded.

"I don't want to go" she assured him and teased "But I do need to lie down. I am tired."

He chuckled and shifted back to the pillow. As soon as she lied down beside him she was engulfed into a hug. He snuggled into her chest and drifted into sleep. Maybe she can't just let him have any rights of a lover over her. But she will definitely try to bring him back to his cheerful life.

Stretching his muscles he woke up when his gaze fell on the lady perched on the window pane. He focused his eyes.

"Jodhaaa... You here?" Jalal was shocked with her presence.

"Do you want me to leave" she posed an innocent face.

"Ofcourse not. That will be the last thing I will ever want." Words shoot out autopiloted.

Opening her bag she took out the diary. "When you were in hospital.. Ammijaan brought me here that night.. I was not able to sleep and I.. The look of it had me intrude and I.. I am sorry.. I took it without your permission."

"Its okay. How did you like it" Jalal asked making it sound as if it were a normal novel.

"Beautiful" she sighed "but sad ending"

Jalal smiled sadly "its always the same"

"I will be getting married this Sunday."

"Congratulations." Jalal said, masking his hurt, in a barely audible voice.

"Today I got a proposal of marriage and I accepted."

"Today??" He glanced at his watch confused by her statement. Oops it's 10'o clock. He wondered how did he sleep this long. After their separation he barely used to sleep for 2-3 hours. He sighed "Who"

"You"

"What"

"Ammijaan asked my hand for you.."

## Flashback ##

Jodha opened her eyes and glanced at Jalal. How innocent he looked in his sleep. He looks so relaxed but in reality he was anything but relaxed.

She got up and freshened up. She walked downstairs and... oops... Hamida and Nandini were looking at her amused.

"Good morning" Jodha whispered nervously.

"Good morning" came the cheerful reply from duo.

"Come sit Jodha.. I wanted to talk to you" Hamida continued.

"I must get ready for my classes. Bye Jodha. Bye mom" Nimmi excused herself leaving the two to talk.

"Yes ammijaan" Jodha smiled sitting beside Hamida.

"Am glad to see you here"

"Am glad to be here"

"I know that there's some tension between you and Jalal"

Jodha whispered shocked "how do you know.."

"Am his mother Jodha.. I remember the time when you entered his life.. He used to be so happy. But then suddenly he.. he shunned everyone out of his life. He's living like a zombie. I knew its something related to his relationship with you but he was never ready to talk about that. Finally he gave up yesterday. I don't know the details. But I know that he is at fault. Trust me he can never hurt you intensionally. He needs you. Please give him a chance."

"What do you mean that he need me?"

"Even though he is 26, he don't know to take care of himself. He can take care of everyone and everything but himself. I am too old now. I don't know how long I will be able to be by his side. I request you beta please don't leave him."

"You are like a mother to me. Please don't say like that. Nothing will happen to you."

"Don't tell him about anything I told you. I know he wounded you but please try.. Once"

"Don't worry ammijaan. He is my responsibly now."

"Will you marry him?" She asked hesitantly.

"Yes"

## Flashback ends ##

"You will marry me?" He asked shocked.

"I can't deny her. She is like a mother to me" This was far from the real reason. But what else could she say.

"You don't want to marry me?" He asked getting silence as the only response. "Its okay. You don't have to deny her. I will do that"

"And what excuse will you make?"

"I... I will say that I like someone else"

"She knows the truth Jalal"

"But you don't have to marry me unwillingly"

"Whom would I like to torture more than you by marrying him" She raised an eyebrow.

Jalal chuckled "I will be a happy prisoner"

"I would like a simple wedding"

"With a grand reception party? Will it do?" he smiled... wholeheartedly.

"Yes"

He gazed at the full moon from the window of his room.. nope their room. Simple wedding it was like she wanted, both with Hindu and Muslim rituals. Although he didn't experience pre-wedding romance, teasings and all but he didn't had any qualms as she was the bride. She looked so beautiful in her bridal dress. He is hers' and she is his' to love, to cherish, and to behold. He turned back to see his Jodha, who was now his wife, peacefully sleeping on her side of bed. Last few hours were so awkward. Their "first night".

He entered his room, after his pockets were emptied by his sister, and saw Jodha sitting at the edge of the bed. He could feel her body tensed. He looked around the room.. it can't be more romantic. Petals of red rose dominated the decoration along with other beautiful and scented flowers. Candles were adding to the serenity of the environment. Everything was perfect. It would have been a great night if only situations were different. He sighed. No doubt Jodha must be feeling uncomfortable.

He wanted to assure her. He sat beside her "Jodha.." She cringed at his proximity. He was shocked.

"Relax Jodha. You know me enough to know that I can never force myself on you."

She looked up at his stern face which had a hint of hurt hidden in it. Yes he was hurt. He never ever had thought in his wildest nightmare that she would fear him. He opened his cupboard and rushed into the bathroom with his night suit.

He looked at his reflection with wide eyes. Even after knowing him inside out, she was scared that he would force himself on her? Why? She never feared his proximity. Has their relationship broken beyond repair?
