Guys...writing an OS...after a long time

...

She had been a secret admirer of him since her college days, but never mustered up the courage to ever speak to him. She was a simpleton, who had come for education in this elite college on the basis of a scholarship. He belonged to one of the wealthiest lineage in the country and was a heartthrob in the college. Women would literally drool over him, but he was never attentive to any such attention.

Gauri Sharma was an orphan, staying with her grandmother. She had been a struggler all her life, losing her parents at an early age, but that was never a deterrent for her determination. She was an ordinary girl with extraordinary ambitions. Science was her obsession and music was her passion.

Omkara Singh Oberoi, had an envious parentage, belonging to a filthy rich family. A man who was utterly bored with his aristocratic connections. He was creative at heart and never allowed his thoughts to be imprisoned. Despite belonging to a business family, he had chosen be a professor of Modern Art in one of the elite colleges. He abhorred the high class hippocratic society and wanted a breath of fresh air and relief.

She was precisely the breath of fresh air that he desired for. He had first heard her voice during one of the college functions. He couldn't help control himself and followed the voice and in the auditorium of the college Omkara first caught a glimpse of Gauri.

"Lag jaa gale ke phir yeh haseen Raat ho na ho
Shayad phir iss janam mein mulakat ho na ho..."

She wasn't one of the angels descending from heaven, but there was something genuine about her.

As she was leaving the auditorium, he called her...
" Excuse me Madam"...

She turned around...her heart skipped a beat...he was standing right in front of her...with much difficulty she found her voice...

"Yes sir..."

Omkara had called her out of an impulse...but didn't know what exactly he wanted to say...

"You have a beautiful voice...its divine"...he was bad with striking conversations and didn't know how to continue

"Ttthank you sir..."...Gauri stammered...she was equally bad with conversations

This unstriking conversation marked the beginning of a beautiful acquaintance...

They slowly started meeting each other...the meetings rarely had any conversations...but the mere presence of each other was comforting for them. For Omkara this simple girl was drastically differently from the shallow women with whom he had interacted till date. She never enquired about his family or connections. Om was surprised to see how small things of life gave her immense happiness.

And Gauri had always admired him from a distance...she was elated to have his friendship

She had introduced him to her Naani...her only family...and Om just admired the old lady. Gauri was her photocopy. A lovely relationship budded.
...

Their friendship deepened as days passed by. Gauri had always harboured feelings for Omkara...but she never revealed this as she was scared to lose his friendship.

A year passed by and Omkara had to leave the country. He had been awarded a prestigious award in Modern Art and along with that an honorary professor post in one of the most well known art universities in Italy.

Gauri was in her final year college. She really didn't understand whether she was happy or sad...she always wanted him to do well in life...and this was once in a life time opportunity for him.

As she stood in the airport bidding him farewell...he had a strange feeling...that what if she would never see him again?...she knew these thoughts were baseless...but what if...

...

2 years passed by... Omkara became a well known name in the art industry. In his separation from Gauri...he felt a void in his life. Inspire of getting the success...he felt lonely...he wanted to share it with her.

InitiallyOnce in a fortnight...he made it a point to talk to her...but as the days passed by...he made it more frequent.

He was terribly missing her presence and there was no denial...his heart longed to see her...to feel her presence...in their separation he realised his true feelings for the girl. He would have to tell her about his feelings as soon as possible...he was getting impatient.

He called her up...it was probably midnight in India...

" Hello Gauri..."...he started

"What happened? Is everything okay?" ...her voice sounded startled, she was not used to receive these calls at odd hours.

" Yes everything is okay...i need to tell you something...now"...he sounded excited...impatient...

Gauri sensed a change in his otherwise composed and calm voice..."what is it?"

Just as he was about to blurt out...the realisation dawned upon him...that telephonic conversation was not the correct mode of communicating what he wanted to say...

"I need to meet you for that...will be coming to India soon"

"Oh...okay..."...she replied..." will be waiting for you"...

She kept the phone...she was tired...the pain was unbearable...he wanted to tell her something...probably the right time had arrived.

...

5 days had passed since he talked to Gauri...he was so busy with his exhibition...that he couldn't call her up...

But that was something amazing about Gauri...she never complained...she understood him better than he understood himself.

His masterpiece for the exhibition was done...he couldn't help admire it...the portrait was a beauty...but the person was infinitely better...

As he was lost in his thoughts...he heard the doorbell ring...

It was 7 am...strange...who could it be?

He went and opened the door...his jaws dropped...he rubbed his eyes...

She was standing there in a perfectly white anarkali suit in front of him...

He stated at her...spellbound...with a loss of words...

" Gauri..."...his voice choked..." you have come here to meet me?..."

" No I thought of just coming here and taking a Gondola ride"...she laughed..." of course I have come to meet you "

Om realised...she was standing outside..."please come in...i am so sorry...i was so surprised that I forgot to ask you to come inside"...

She smiled and came inside...Om took her about his cosy house and ultimately she settled in the living room.

" wait here Gauri"...Om said..."i will get you a cup of coffee..."...

Gauri stopped him..."No...not needed "..." please sit here with me for sometime"...

Om smiled and sat beside her...she was somehow looking tired...probably she had a hectic journey...

"When did you arrive? You didn't tell me...i would have come to receive you"..." you didn't even tell me 5 days back when I talked to you"...he complained

"If I would have told you...would the surprise remain?"...she smiled.

"Nope..but still...its an unknown place for you..." he sounded concerned.

" When I am coming to meet you...that is not a big deal"...she said earnestly...

Om looked at her...she was looking ethereal...the portrait did not do justice...

" Gauri, I want to show you something...please come" he said..

Gauri followed him to his studio...

There in front of her stood her life size portrait...she was mesmerized and spellbound...a line tear slipped the corner of her eye...she looked at Om lovingly and longingly...

Om did not want to waste words...

"Gauri...i will come to the point...i do not know how to say this...and you know that better than me...i can't put it in a roundabout way..."...

"You are already going roundabout"...she laughed...

"Okay...is it...then I shall go straight...I LOVE YOU"...he said...he felt a burden was released from his chest...then suddenly he realised..."was it too blunt?"

Gauri looked at him with her dark brown piercing eyes..."Nope...its the truth"...

She continued..."I can't specify the time...but I guess i fell for you...when I first saw you in our college art room...so it's been a very long time for me...i suppose..." she smiled

Om's joy knew no bounds...she actually loved him...as much as he loved her...

He was about to say something...when he realised he was getting late for the exhibition

" Gauri...i need to go for my exhibition now...i shall talk to you after I come back"

Gauri nodded..."All the best...may you get all the success and happiness that you deserve...always remember that Gauri will do anything for your happiness"

Om smiled and left...he had to make plans for his evening with Gauri.

...

The exhibition was a success, critical and commercial...the artpieces sold off...making him richer by some millions...however, he refused to part with his masterpiece.

As the exhibition got over...he got a call

It was Gauri's..." she must be waiting for me...i got late..."..." but I shall not give her any chance to complain"

He received the call...

"Coming soon..."...

"Om...this is Gauri's grandmother"...he got a bit awkward...she was also in Italy?

" Yes Naani...what happened..?"...he asked..

He could hear her crying inconsolably..."My son I have extremely bad news for you...Gauri my child is no more...she succumbed last night to leukaemia"

Om seemed to be in a trance...what is this lady saying...utter rubbish...demented...

Gauri was with him...since morning...smiling...hale and hearty...and they confessed their love

The voice went on..." she was detected with leukaemia a year back...but she didn't want to disclose it to you...as she felt it would affect you career...when you called her 5 days back...i was with her in the hospital...she was in severe pain...and she knew her end was coming "

Om walked away from gallery with shuffled strides...what was happening...Gauri was there at home...waiting for him...he reached home and rang the door bell...no one answered...with shaky hands he took his keys out and opened the door...it was quiet and dark...not a soul...

The realisation was dawning upon him...slowly but steadily...with all his might he shouted..."Gauri..."

She needed to tell him how much she loved him...and needed to know how much he loved her...this love would keep her going even after death...she would always be with him...in the light...in the darkness...in his happiness...she would remain in his smile...in his sadness...she would escape as a teardrop...in his anger...she would be his patience...in her death she united with him...she stared at him...longing to touch and caress him...comfort him...but slowly she passed into oblivion.

"Lag jaa gale ki phir yeh...haseen Raat ho na ho

Shayad phir iss janam mein mulakat ho na ho..."

Concluded...

Love

Priya (di)
