The Samay aspect has many possibilities.

The most likely being Samay was Maya's past. Not only an ex, but someone who knows grave stories about her maybe. The truth that could send her to jail. What can be the truth? Someone's murder? Quite a possibility.

Now the question is if the he was the witness of a murder or a victim himself, in the sense someone of his own was murdered. Their can be possibilities. Maya might have caught feelings for him and he might not. In such a state maya might have at her extremity murdered someone of him. Not much evidence could have been gathered then maybe enough to accuse her but Samay might have warned her that he'll return before she dies to take a revenge. Now he might be playing a double game, trying to prove that he understood her love on being apart, trusts her that she wasn't the killer and now wants her back in life. Though it is his strategy to save arjun too somehow because I don't believe he loves her otherwise would not have called her an illness herself . ( arjun ko bimaari hui hai )

Maya is devastated because she believes he knows the truth. She herself might be startled at his change of behaviour, must be doubting his intentions and staying alert. Samay might have plan fully entered Saanjh's life to get to Maya for a revenge, and also might have seen Arjun equally trapped, trying to sort out both ends.

Another possibility being Samay neither way is related to any tremendous truth of her life but was just another victim of her insane love, though who could somehow escape, warning to return to make her pay for her tortures. Samay might have genuinely loved Saanjh, but on getting to know about arjun he might have just come ahead to help him out. Might be before coming to their office both saanjh and Samay had talked about it, and planfully entered together. Samay could stop maya from time and again entering Arjun's room while saanjh could talk to him. They might have just decided to save arjun together from doom . Remember how saanjh carried ' Times' in her hand. Possibly enough Samay is with her and not using her.

What say?

Lol but why would Samay be all interested in "Saving" Arjun?

Samay ko aur koi kaam nahi hai kya? And what's his profession by the way?

Moreover Arjun is not that doodh ka dhulla as he portrays himself to be infront of Jhanvi. I feel he likes to play the Victim card infront of Jhanvi to get her sympathy and at the same time he gets to keep Maya's wealth.

I am not sure about the murder aspect but Samay must be a victim of Maya or her psychiatrist. (Remember, post leap Saanjh's entry in the airport, she was saying something like this, 'patient ko shock dene se pehle..', I think he is a psychiatrist)

Yes Samay has a plan, it could be either to just free Arjun from Maya or to get back Maya in his life. And I think Saanjh is unaware of his plan and his past also.

About your first possibility..

Maya never ever can be a killer of someone bcoz it was always herself she harmed in all the cases until now.

She always harmed herself in case of arjun or its ashwin. So that's not possible that maya becoming killer of someone attached to samay.

And in 2nd possibility I don't think samay really loves saanjh bcoz even after telling her to save her friend he only had maya in his mind playing.

He want to actually reach maya through saanjh & engaging saanjh to arjun so that he can engage himself with maya may be.

Saanjh is a pawn for him.

And mostly I feel it can be samay is obsessed with maya and want her back may be. And maya will fight off him alone i guess.

But also there will also be chances arjun get jealous and take his relationship seriously and try to mend it in diff ways too.

This is also a possibility.

Don't know about his possibilities and probabilities, but he looks equally mad like Maya. One mentally ill person has not consulted a psychiatrist yet, here we have another. The haven't cured one obsession, here is one more for audience.

Exactly arjun isn't any dhoodh ka dhula. Actually no one in this serial.

Maya didn't try to cage him just after marriage remember. After giving him enough chances she did it.

She did it bcz of his wayward nature only.

She always saying something on the terms "dhoka" .

We know how arjun goes around flirting & playing around with girls.

Being the insecure one maya after few chances caged him.

And arjun must be blamed here and his behaviour is one of the reasons. He's a man child totally who doesn't want any responsibilities. Even now he wants to escape but not try in other ways.

He enjoyed all her luxuries but don't want any kind of responsibility of his wife.

But I think Samay is not mentally ill. I think he is doing it for a good cause. Lets see how it goes..

What i think is ... In no way samay's behavior looks like a victim to me ... Because if it was the case then he would have not had the hug, the way it was portrayed it looked like he was very happy to see her ...

I think they could have been good friends in the past and he had feelings for her but she did not and something must have happened which leads to the separation ...

My concern is the hidden motive behind his return .. if he had/still has feelings for maya so what is the knot attached with sanjh and he being all supportive for her ...

Another thing i feel is maybe samay was the one in the past who actually wanted to help maya from fighting with her past but as maya is she maintains a distance with him ... But now when he returns his dialogue indicate towards that ...

Remember when vandy said to sanjh "Dont test the goodness of samay"

and samay replied "My goodness has been tested"

wonder if maya was the one who tested him before?

Samay is trying to push Sanj towards Arjun for sure. What is his goal for doing so is what is to be seen.

Possibilities -
He is in love with Maya, so he wants to separate Arya
He is here to settle scores with Maya for something that happened to him from maya. This could be tied to the 25 years of jail Ashwin was talking about and Maya's big sach.
He is here to show Maya the reality, to help her get the treatment she needs.

I am leaning towards #1 or #2
