What an incredible post. I was quite tired of reading women denouncing Feminism because somehow Dev's chauvinism has to be justified. But the fact is what Dev was and still is convenient liberal.
I will explain what I mean by that.
When it comes to his mother and her treatment of him and his sisters, he is very happy to get her 99.99% attention and care while leaving his sisters nothing. I could still justify his childhood. But why he never questioned his mother about her continued partiality as he grew up? Instead he kept on defending his mother's actions and tried to make up for his mother's lack of concern for her daughters with money.
Then he fell in love with independent and strong woman like Sonakshi who was nothing like women in his family. He was happy and proud of her strength and independent nature until he realised that it also comes with tendency to question. Every time Sonakshi tried to question his questionable decisions or behaviour, he did not like her independent nature at all. He shouted at her and silenced her.
We all know including Dev what she went through at his home. But he said or did nothing hoping like his sisters, Sonakshi also learn to keep her head down and not rock the boat so that he can spend his life pretending to be oblivious just like he did in his sisters' case and may be he can make up it up to her with money. That was good enough for his sisters. Why won't it be good enough for her?
However, the reason I said that Dev is convenient liberal is because he expected Ranveer to do for his sister what he was not prepared to do for Sonakshi. That's where his trait of Dixit double standard comes out. He is not only feminist, but female chauvinist when it comes to his sisters. But when it comes to Sonakshi he is male chauvinist. In short, like Ishwari, he has convenient morality which is modified to his advantage.
After break up he clearly revealed that he expected Sonakshi to be like his sisters and put up with everything and not leave him. The fact that he repeatedly taunted Sonakshi's success and her achievements including calling her feminist tells me that he expected her to fail and come crawling back to him so that he could establish his male superiority. He continued to create situation like that until he finally got Sonakshi to beg because she was injured and wanted to go back to her daughter, who was also his daughter.
Had Ranveer done to Neha what he did to Sona, he would have ripped him apart. But again different strokes for him and different for the rest of the world..
If that is not example of chauvinism, I don't know what is. Sonakshi always tried to be fair and just to Dev despite him never being anyway fair or just to her. So if that makes Sonakshi feminist, then he should thank his lucky stars that she is feminist!. A true female chauvinist would have made him beg and kept him hanging before allowing to meet their daughter. I have no doubt that's what Dev would have done if it was the other way around.
