I finally caught up to the past 1 week + and I found it quite gripping. The show has taken a turn and we can all feel it. Maya is slowly revealing her layers.
There is clearly more to the Maya-Ashwin and Jhanvi story than we know. Their relationship was toxic and dysfunctional. But there was more to it than that. Clearly, there was always a power struggle between Maya and Ashwin. Ashwin never wanted someone to come between him and Jhanvi's wealth. He used Jhanvi the whole time and even though she KNEW it, she was too weak to resist Ashwin's brand of charm. Maya however is a lot more like Ashwin. They are both "A" type dominant personalities. Hence their constant clash. If Ashwin was controlling, then Maya too learned how to get revenge and clearly one day she did. She did something that irrevocably sent Ashwin packing.
It's clear that Maya has successfully erased her past. She has explanations for everything that happened. She was on anti-depressants too. Not just Jhanvi. She did attempt to kill herself when Jhanvi told her that SHE- Maya was the biggest "Nishani" of Ashwin. I think Maya hates the part of herself that is like Ashwin. But unfortunately, that is the dominant side of her nature. She is not submissive and easily manipulated like Jhanvi. Maya is confident. The only time she ever lost her confidence is in front of Ashwin. I think a lot of what Maya became is due to his abuse. But is there a fundamentally dark streak in Maya that the abuse triggered? Was she always a sociopath waiting to happen?
The way Maya has played this "Game" of getting Ashwin's case closed with comatose Jhanvi being the inadvertent culprit makes it clear that she has a dangerous mind. I think the person that Jhanvi ran from when she fell was probably Maya! Does that mean Maya knew all along that call was going to come to the Inspector right after she confessed to killing Ashwin? Or did she do that "spur of the moment", because she could not stand Arjun being arrested? Only time will tell, because Maya did look shocked when the call came? However, Maya IS a good actress. So we can't always rely on her shocked expressions to know if this was genuine shock, or just another act!
I love watching Maya, but I am not blind to her faults. At this point, it looks like Maya probably did kill Ashwin, and created an elaborate "Web" to prevent that truth from coming out. Just like all these years, many truths about her never saw the light of day. But eventually, they will. Did she kill that Pandit in Mauritius? Again, not sure. But Maya is someone who hates to be contradicted. That Pandit clearly told her that she needs to stay away from Arjun. That she will only bring darkness to Arjun's life. He said "The darkness in you". He knew that Maya has a dangerous mind. The kind of mind that never stops. Always planning the next move. Maya is like the Master of her own chess game. She is always moving her pawns around. Right now, it's Arjun, Ayaan and Saanjh. But the people playing her game the best are Vandana and Jhanvi. They are exactly where she wants them to be. Both were causing her major headaches. As you say in Hindi "Wo un dono ko tikane laga diya!" (I hope I said it in the right context).
Like it or not people...Maya IS the Gone Girl! This is not a love story of a sad abused girl trying to become a good girl for her husband and his family. She almost tried that for like 2 weeks. But it seems the world won't let her forget who she really is. Vandana was not going to accept "nice" Maya. So now she will be forced to know tow to "Dangerous Maya". Because she was and always will be Maya the manipulator. This Gone Girl is winning right now. I just can't wait to see what she does next!
