She walked through the corridors of the college observing people around her. When she first came to Delhi, she never thought that she would someday walk like this, not caring much about what others thought about her. She was the kind of person who merged in the crowd and never stood out. The anonymity it brought was a protective cover for her. She was not an introvert, in fact she made many good friends in the past few years in college. Her thoughts were broken when someone called her. "Geet...". A smile came to her face knowing the owner of the voice and she turned to greet her. "Wow, look who decided to grace the college with her presence." With a light smack on her arm Meera hugged her, her best friend and one of the people whom she loved the most. After pulling out of the hug she asked, "Geeet.. Tell me everything I missed. I can't believe that I was away for a month." Geet smiled and told, "I can very much count the days you were away, you left me with those idiots who know nothing but to talk of either their dresses or shoes." "Sorry dear." Meera caught her ears and smiled, a gesture that could melt even a rock, then how can she even show mock anger to her. She hugged her and told, "I missed you a lot Meera and I am glad that you are back."
The classes as usual were boring for Meera, occasionally disturbing Geet with her hushed jokes and Geet trying hard not to laugh while not taking eyes from the professor. When the bell rang before lunch hour, Meera let a long sigh and told, "Uff!! I forgot how difficult the classes are. How can you sit through these boring classes without yawning?" Geet smiled and shook her head at the daily nautanki. Even though not very attentive in classes, Meera never lacked good grades, always coming second following Geet. They both moved towards the canteen. Their table was already occupied except for the two of them. Geet rolled her eyes when the other girls fawned over Meera's dress and her trip to Paris. Meera giggled seeing her expression. Meera Malhotra was from one of the most prominent business families in Delhi. Despite her wealth and status, she was kind and loving. She couldn't think of how she could have adjusted with the city life if not with the help of Meera. Sameera chimed, "I heard that the Khuranas were also there to attend the wedding in Paris. We missed Mr. Khurana's class this month. How sad it is!!" Geet flushed slightly at the mention of the name while Meera winked at her. To her relief, soon the discussion flowed to wedding dress and the celebrities attended.
The day seemed shorter since Meera was with her. She had missed her constant chatter and larger than life presence. It had always been like this since they became friends, she missed her so much when she had the occasional trips. She liked the other girls, but most of them were superfluous, more interested in appearances and with little substance. It was a chore being with them. They were never nasty or unkind. But she could never connect with them like Meera. They included her in their friends' circle faster and was always pulled into all the shopping and parties they organised. She always thought city girls who were very beautiful like Sameera would be mean. It was a surprise to her when she got to know them. There were few nasty gals like Sasha and Tasha who never got along with any ladies. They had a group along with the meanest guys in the college. Lucky that they never noticed Geet much. With Meera alongside, her presence was always forgotten. She always downplayed her looks and tried to blend in the group wearing some modest shirts paired with shirts or long skirts. Besides their group had college beauties like Sameera and Pari who were always Sasha's strike points, more out of jealousy and the guys hitting on them. Both overlooked Sasha's comments and flirted back with the guys. So, they were always safe from their nastiness. They never came cross with Meera as her uncle was the principal of the college and everyone was afraid of Meera's elder brother, Veer, an old student of the same college. The day ended sooner than usual as they had last two hours free.
She was having a sleepover at Meera's home and they left for her home after college. Mom and dadi called her after reaching Meera's home as always to ensure that she was fine. Meera's home was not less than a palace in all its glory. She sometimes lost her way inside it still. Even though the mansion screamed wealth, there was a personal touch in every single thing inside it. Mrs Malhotra, Meera's mom made it a home. She was also warm and loving like Meera. Even though Mr.Malhotra was a bit serious, he always made her feel welcome at their home. The only person she has concern was Veer. He made it a point in making her feel that she was an outsider and not welcome in his very few words here and there. She knew that it has something to do with... Her thoughts were interrupted again by Meera. To her delight, Veer was on a business trip. They had a nice time playing pool with Mr. Malhotra, then going through the old antique jewellery collection of Mrs. Malhotra and finally a romcom with popcorn in their entertainment room. Meera and she talked until it was midnight. Meera dozed off after a while. She took her mobile thinking twice before sending a "Goodnight". She got the response almost immediately, "Goodnight Geet." She smiled and the restlessness inside her subsided. She held the phone closer before sleep overtook her.
