Perpetuating superstitions. Progressive or regressive?

Beyhadh was supposed to be something 'new' and 'refreshing'. So far the only thing even marginally 'refreshing' about this show was that the heroine was bold enough to take the first step in initating the love angle and also her being abused and possibly mentally ill. Of course, the treatment of mental illness in this show leaves something to be desired. The 'pagal' thing is borderline offensive. But what's even more offensive is the kundali- apshagun thing. It's not just shown as something the hero's mother believes in but it is shown as fact, as something that predicts the storyline and also something very integral to Jennifer's character. I have half a mind to report the show for showing such bulls*t. The only reason I watched this show was because of the massive crush I have on Jennifer. I knew not to expect anything even marginally good because c'mon, this is Indian TV. The same indian TV that shows women turning into house flies and shots of one guy being slapped with 100 effects and terrible music.But still, this show seemed less terrible and daily-soapish than Jennifer's previous ones. I can't believe how wrong I was to watch this. Worst. Decision. Ever. This show put me off Indian tv forever. Well I guess I should just stick to seeing her pictures and hoping that Jennifer chooses something sensible next. Because honestly, she deserves better.

I can understand how you are feeling. I too had high hopes when I began watching the show but the marriage track just ruined everything. They made Maya a typical bahu, added saas-bahu drama and Vandana's character is totally nonsensical. I thought it would be a thriller but now they added a ghost track too. When they have limited episodes, they could have made it different and interesting but they chose the usual crappy story

I'm sure we shouldn't judge the show based on the previous 2-3 weeks episodes... I'm sure there is much more left to the story! Plus in a way they're also showing that superstitions are nothing. You can't blame superstitions for what was in your fate. What has to happen will happen even tho every ritual went well in people's weddings doesn't mean that it will last. Many people's rituals go well but they end up getting divorced. In this show they show that the wedding happened no matter what... and no matter what each of her rituals still happen ;)

Its a goddam fiction! That's it. There is no progression or regression of somebody is portraying belief in astrology. Because it's fiction and you can never disregard everything related to astrology. It can be thought as lost science . You don't know if it's true or not. And most importantly it's just a FICTION. Is showing Spider-Man by biting spider is regressive?? Is showing dragon lady in game of thrones is regressive? We should just try to stop to think everything as social reform because it's not. It's entertainment fictional show. There is no need to put evrything scientific in shows nobody changes by watching fictional shows.

AFAIK Hindu religion advocates karma not blind fate. Indian culture? Really? Judging someone on the basis of a paper that some 'all knowing' godman dictates is Indian culture? Treating someone like trash just because a glass happened to break is culture? Labelling a person's entire existence as 'unlucky' based on certain events that were totally out of said person's control is culture? Whatever happened to forgiveness, acceptance and non-judgement. I believe THAT is culture.

And I beg to differ. They aren't showing superstitions as 'nothing'. They're using superstitions as an important plot device. All these things are shown as 'warnings' and 'signs' of how unlucky a person Maya is. Never mind that despite being abused and mentally tortured this woman built a successfull empire, she's always going to be 'unlucky' because of her supposed 'fate'. That's absolute rubbish. A person writes his/her own fate.

And about the fiction thing. Really? If that is so then a censor board shouldn't exist. After all everything is fiction.

Despite everything, the fact that a person like Maya would fall in love with a low life like Arjun is what I find most unrealistic about the show 🤣
