Chapter 20 :
Not so surprisingly, Asad and Zoya slept for the remaining of the day and only did they wake up when it was time for dinner.
Dilshad was torn. On the one hand, she was scared, tired and angry, her husband was in a critical condition at the hospital and she couldn't do anything about it. On the other hand, she was delighted. Her son was back. Her Asad was back. Today he had even gone as far as to take her in his arms.
After 22 years, she finally felt like she was getting her son back, but how cruel was life, where she was getting her son back, she was losing her husband...
But no, she was not, the only thing giving her courage again was the fact that Rashid was going to be operated and would be back on his feet in no time, thanks to the specialists handling his case.
As soon as Dilshad got home, she went to get her son, knowing that Nikhat had already arranged for dinner.
The mother, after having knocked, did not wait for any kind of permission before barging in. But once inside, she realized her mistake. In her thoughts, she had completely forgotten the fact that Asad was now a married man.
After opening the door, she saw the couple lying in each other's arms.
Dilshad was pleasantly surprised. Knowing how reticent Asad had been to marry Zoya, she did not expect to see him holding his wife so tenderly to him.
They were both lying side by side with Asad cradling Zoya's head to his heart while Zoya had her arms around his waist, holding him close. Undisturbed by whatever noise Dilshad had made coming in.
After these past few days of crying for Rashid's health, even after staying the whole day by his side scared of him leaving them. She cried again. But this time, with tears of happiness, of contentment for her son who was now married and happily in love.
The only thing she regretted was having lost all connection with Asad. She realized that she had pressurized him into marrying Zoya but she had not done it to make him suffer. On the contrary, the second she had seen Zoya, she knew that she was perfect for her Ziddi Asad.
She sure had not made it feel that way, knowing that Asad would have had backed out. But she had only his best intentions at heart.
However, Dilshad had apparently disturbed Zoya's sleep because as she opened her eyes and felt herself being cradled in the arms of the man she loved, she also felt another presence in the room.
Zoya slightly turned her head to see who was there and flushed a beetroot red when she realized it was her mother-in-law and that she, the daughter-in-law was lying intimately close to her son.
Zoya managed to disentangle herself from Asad and pulled unsuccessfully at the dupatta Asad was half sleeping on.
Asad would have sure teased her mercilessly if he would have seen her blushing face at that moment.
"Sone do naa..." Asad groaned at Zoya with his eyes still closed. "Okay, you wanna play this game?" He asked provocatively and pulled on the dupatta, making her fall on top of him.
Asad opened his eyes and smiled at having his Zoya in his arms, he went to run his hand through her hair, "Good-" when he heard someone clearing her throat.
Asad turned his head to see his mother standing there with an embarrassed smile. He jumped away from Zoya as if she was on fire and she only pulled on her dupatta.
"I'm sorry, it's my fault... Main toh sirf dinner ke liye bulane aayi thi..." Dilshad said with a small smile, "Tum log bhi bahir ajao, subah se kuch khaya nahi hoga..."
As the door shut after Dilshad, Zoya hid her face in her hands and groaned so loudly that Asad was taken aback. He was the one, usually groaning.
But when Asad saw her face, he could not help but bursting into fits of laughter. The Zoya who was usually so open to arguments, who would never lose face by showing any kind of embarrassment at any occasion, was right now red as a beetroot. Asad laughed so hard that he fell back on his pillow while laughing.
"Glad you find this to be funny..." Zoya said drily but could not hide the growl behind her words.
Nevertheless, when he kept laughing, she hit him with her pillow which managed to sober him up, and when he spoke again, he broke into a grin again and laughed while doing what Zoya had feared, "If you could see your own face right now!"
Zoya fumed, "Oh really? Dekhte hain kaun hasega when i'll avenge myself..."
Asad laughed harder, underestimating his wife but Zoya only smirked, sobering him up and apprehending what she would do.
********
They sat down for dinner with Asad and Zoya on one side and Dilshad and Nikhat on the other, leaving the chair on the head of the table, empty.
Dilshad had hovered over him, serving him, asking if he needed anything, trying to be extra aware of Asad's needs.
However this only managed to make the situation more awkward. Asad had expected Zoya to step in to his rescue but she had simply held his hand under the table.
Zoya's mother, Zeenat, and her Bhabhi, Mehreen, had told her and explained to her that whatever fight happened between a husband and wife, they should stand together. And Asad had only teased for which he was going to get a tit for tat anyway, so there was no reason for her not to be her husband's shield when he needed her.
The fact that Rashid was going to be alright and Asad being back had definitely cheered Dilshad up, "Khana kaisa hai, Asad?"
Asad awkwardly made eye contact and shortly said, "It's good."
Dilshad smiled, "You must not get to eat all this desi food in New-York, right?"
This situation could be considered as very sad and that's what Zoya felt, his own mother did not know about her son's habits nor his likes and dislikes.
Asad cleared his throat, trying to avoid looking into her eyes, "Zoya is a great cook, she makes it all."
Nikhat took the opportunity to lighten up the mood, by sighing dramatically, "Tsk, tsk, tsk... Bhaijaan ab toh aap typical husband ban gaye, koi mauka hi nahi chodhte apni biwi ki tareef karne ki!"
Asad rolled his eyes and managed to poke Nikhat's hand with his fork.
But she only laughed, "What? Am i wrong? Tabhi aapne chhupke se Bhabhi ka haath bhi pakra hua hai!"
Zoya's eyes widened, she let go of his hand immediately as if on fire and then flushed in many shades of red.
Asad smirked, "Kya karun, Nikhat? I'm just that awesome; your Bhabhi cannot resist my charm either..."
Nikhat and Dilshad laughed while Zoya's eyes widened and her jaw dropped, she snapped, "Oh really, Mr. Khan? Aapki abhi pol kholti hoon!" She shot him a devilish look, sobering him up, "You know, tumhare Bhaijaa-"
Asad managed to push some cabbage in her mouth at that time, "Arey subah se kuch nahi khaya, baatein kam aur khao zyada!"
After a colorful dinner, when everybody was retiring back to their room, Dilshad caught Asad, "Beta, i want to talk to you..."
The son visibly stiffened and the mother couldn't help but feel a pang of hurt.
Asad looked towards Zoya, not knowing what to do, she shrugged, the decision was his, she could not help him everytime. He looked back towards his mother and saw a longing in her eyes.
Asad suppressed a sigh and nodded, they both moved to the backyard and sat. Him, stiffer than what she had expected and her, just as nervous.
The mother put her hand over her son's, "You know, when you were just a toddler, i would sit here with you. This place has always been such a stress reliever." She noticed Asad, gritting his teeth, "I'm so happy you are back, Asad. I have missed-"
Dilshad was cut off by Asad standing up abruptly and turning away from her, "I-I can't do this... I'm sorry but i just can't act as if i forgot whatever happened and i'm ready to start over... I just can't..."
Meaning these words, he walked away from his mother in long strides and went back to his room, leaving a shocked and hurt Dilshad behind.
He could not believe it. How could she?! How dare she?! Saying that she was happy to have him back, that she missed him and all this without even apologizing for what she had done to him with his father ?! Forget about apologizing, she did not even acknowledge it!
Asad knew it, it wasn't possible. This was just too much.
As he walked to his room but instead ran into Nikhat and she frowned, "Is everything okay, Bhaijaan? Kya hua? Why are you so angry?"
Asad massaged his forehead to calm his raging migraine and blew out a breath, but he visibly could not say anything. She took him to her room and made him sit on the couch. He did, with his head in his hands.
Nikhat sighed and put her hands on her hips, "Agar aap batayenge nahi, mujhe pata kaise chalega?" She sat down next to him and continued, "It's Ammi, right? What did she say?"
Asad shook his head, "No Nikhat, I'm not going to involve you in this... It is between them and me. I cannot ask you to take a position in all this." He said softly while smiling sadly at her, "I know you wish to help but iss mamle mein you will only end up being pulled in every direction. On the one hand you have your Ammi and Abbu and then, on the other hand your Bhaijaan and Bhabhi. Iss mein behtari yeh hi hogi ke tum beech mein na padho..."
Although his sister understood why her brother was asking this from her, she couldn't help but feel hurt and rejected because on the first occasion when she suggested him her help, he denied her.
Noticing the expression on her face, Asad put his arm around her shoulder and pulled her to his chest, "I did not want to hurt you. I just want to protect you... as your Bhaijaan."
At his words, her expression that had morphed into a forlorn one, became a lighter, truly relieved. She responded by putting her arms around his waist. It was so rare and has been so long since she longed to have a proper interaction with her brother that now, having him close to her made her simply... happy.
********
The following day, they all went to the hospital together.
Asad had shared with Zoya about what Dilshad had said and his reaction to her words.
But what she said to that simply shocked him, she had not seemed disappointed or anything. On the contrary, she had tried to sooth him, "Asad, before just standing up and rushing out, did you ever think that maybe she was as uncomfortable as you? She might not have said what you wanted to hear but did you even let her finish? It is hard for you but it is just as hard for her. You cannot just make an opinion out of those two sentences she said to you... Before saying and doing anything, you need to give them a chance and not just an opportunity to say what you want to hear, but a real chance..."
Asad had frowned at that, "What makes you think they will apologize?" He asked so hopefully yet in a way that she knew he hurt.
Zoya then got angry, "Isn't that obvious?! Your mother loves you, she longed for you... Perhaps she did not start by apologizing but maybe she was coming to it?!"
Asad wanted to believe it so much, yet he feared to be left disappointed as he had always been by them. He smiled sadly, "But now i will never know..."
"Give them a real chance. You cannot live in the fear of being disappointed..." When Asad was ready to refute, she continued, "Did you change your ways for me? Stop looking as if i killed your non-existent puppy and answer me..." he reluctuantly nodded, "See? If you can change, they can change too, kya pata? Maybe they already changed but you never gave them a chance to prove it..."
Asad sighed, "I hate it when you are right..." to what Zoya had laughed.
Now as they drove to the hospital, Zoya could sense Asad's nervousness and Dilshad's disappointment.
Before going in Rashid's hospital room, Asad had taken a deep breath.
When Asad saw Rashid's pale face, he almost tripped on his own foot. His father had definitely lost weight. Rashid's face had seemed to have lost all of its color and was replaced by a yellowy shade.
As they entered the room, Rashid slowly opened his eyes, hearing the commotions. He smiled when he saw Nikhat and Dilshad's teary face. But what he had not expected was to see his son and his daughter-in-law.
Noticing Asad's paleness, Rashid chuckled, "Why are you so pale? I am the one on the hospital bed..."
Suddenly, Asad turned around and walked out.
When Rashid, Nikhat and Dilshad looked like they were about to freak out at Asad leaving the room, Zoya came forward and placed a hand on Rashid's shoulder and reassured them all, "I'm sorry, Abbu, you don't look well, he must have not expected to see you look so weak..."
Rashid chuckled, "What a sweet way to let me know that I am looking really bad!", then his eyes welled up and he patted her hand, "Jheeti raho, Beta, go and check on him..."
Zoya smiled sadly and went out to see Asad at the end of the corridor. When she joined him, she noticed that his eyes had teared up, but Asad did not let his tears fall.
"He has always been the strong one, the one we would rely on. You know when I was five, he used to be my and Nikhat's Superman... He cannot die..." Asad spoke softly and Zoya rested her head against his arm.
"He will not, this disease happens to a lot of people and lots of them go through the surgery and come out completely fine... Same will be for Abbu, you just have to keep the faith..." To those words, Asad simply nodded.
Those words did comfort him but that did not mean that the next time he saw his Abbu, he would be completely healed. Right now if he went back to the room, Asad would not see his father fit and fine on his feet, he would still be in bed, attached to a drip, looking as weak as he had never looked before.
Asad composed himself and they both headed back inside.
