Jolly LLB 2 movie cast: Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Saurabh Shukla, Annu Kapoor
Jolly LLB 2 movie director: Subhash Kapoor
Jolly LLB 1 or Jolly LLB 2? Actually, let us simplify it for you " Arshad Warsi's lawyer with a questionable moral code or Akshay Kumar's take on the same but with double the star power? Akshay, probably the most prolific actor of our times, is back with his first film of the year and February has just about kicked in. Not one to let grass grow under his feet (and the fact that he has three more films lined up for the year), Akshay has released the second iteration of this legal drama already. To cut to the chase, Akshay plays a small-town lawyer Jagdeeshwar Mishra aka Jolly who believes money is the answer to all world's ills. He would go to any length and do any jugaad to win a case.
The two thorns in his side are Judge Tripathi (Saurabh Shukla, as entertaining as always) and lawyer Mathur (Annu Kapoor in the middle of a crotchety performance). And then there are those jugaads. Thanks to his own machinations, Jolly gets stuck in a particularly sticky case, which will nudge his good side. Before it gets over, we will travel from the heart of north India to Jammu and Kashmir and justice will be served.
What keeps you going is the realistic sparring between the lawyers, the portrayal of lower courts to India which is true to form and good performances. It was the USP of Subhash Kapoor's Jolly LLB and the director focuses on it again as he makes the second film. Watch out for Akshay as he plays the underdog who is there to right the wrongs. The music of the film has failed to evoke interest but then, it is a legal drama, right?
Akshay has made entertainers with a message as his hallmark. Whether it was Rustom or Airlift, the films portrayed the star as an everyman who never goes against the system but still ensures justice is done. Jolly LLB 2 is a big step in the same direction.
Akshay Kumar's Jolly LLB 2 is out now. A sequel to Arshad Warsi's Jolly LLB, this too is comedic in temperament but gets serious when it has to. Read our movie review here:
Films demand good researches when they are based on the theme of corruption in Indian judiciary, and Jolly LLB 2 scores well on this front. Akshay Kumar's biggest challenge in this film is to match up to the expectations that the audience has with the franchise.
The first instalment had Arshad Warsi as Jagdish Tyagi and he carried the entire film on his shoulder. His friendly courtroom banter with justice Sunderlal Tripathi (Surabh Shukla) is still fresh in our memory. So, when we meet Jagdishwar Mishra (Akshay Kumar), the new Jolly, the first question that comes to our mind is: Has director Subhash Kapoor found a worthy successor in Akshay Kumar?
Yes, Akshay's jolly' self is impressive. He thinks he is shrewd, but is confused. Most of his antics backfire and he is still in search of a big break. His wife, Pushpa (Huma Qureshi), enjoys her alcohol and tries to instil some sense into Jolly's mind, but all in vain. Jolly isn't ready to change. His motto: A good life is all about money.
He has a nemesis in Justice Tripathi (Saurabh Shukla reprising his role from the first film). His colleague Mathur (Annu Kapoor) is another hurdle Jolly faces at work.
The film changes its tone from here on and becomes a commentary on the Indian judicial system. But, this is just a beginning for Jolly. His fight against the mighty and corrupt will take him to unknown places and dreaded people. It's tragic and funny at the same time.
Akshay Kumar's comic timing is the backbone of this story. His dialect, theatrics, dialogues, everything is spot on, but he is yet to deliver a powerful speech like Arshad Warsi.
With a fantastic support cast like Saurabh Shukla, Annu Kapoor and Inamul Haq, Jolly LLB 2 looks like a winner. Director Subhash is clearly in command of a story that seems to have a well written screenplay.
Thanks to a combination of Akshay Kumar's willingness to work for a modest fee and canny deal making by the producers, the Bollywood star's latest film Jolly LLB 2 will start generating profits from today, the first day of release.
Fox Star Studios fully recouped the 30 crore ($4.5 million) production budget and 15 crore ($2.2 million) P&A spend by reaping a total of 45 crore ($6.7 million) for the satellite, music and digital rights. So there is plenty of blue sky for writer-director Subhash Kapoor's courtroom drama tinged with humor, which launched on 3,500 screens in India and 600 screens internationally.
" Akshay is one of the few stars who understands the business of movie-making ," Fox Star Studios CEO Vijay Singh told me. "He understands the need to make films on a tight budget, and therefore [knows] the importance of actors charging a flat fee, which has resulted in our film being profitable. This is how the business model of all films should be structured. It becomes a win-win for everyone, and will make the film industry sustainable."
Kumar will share in the back-end profits. Star has the satellite rights and T-Series bought the music rights. The sequel to Kapoor's 2013 hit Jolly LLB, which starred Arshad Warsi in the title role, is getting the second widest release for Kumar behind his 2015 action drama Brothers.
After a special screening on Thursday night social media was abuzz with praise from celebrities and industry executives for the film and the performances of Kumar, Annu Kapoor, Huma Qureshi and Saurabh Shukla.
Kaabil star Hrithik Roshan said he "thoroughly enjoyed this jolly" and offered his congratulations to the team that pulled it off in just 33 days. Amar Butala, chief operating officer of Salman Khan Films and the co-producer of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and the upcoming Tubelight, rated the film as a must-watch for Kumar's powerhouse performance
Trade analyst Aavishkar judged the sequel as more entertaining than the original, lauding the story, performances, comic scenes, witty one-liners and the climax. Distributor/exhibitor Raj Bansal predicted the opening day collections could be the highest of the star's career.
The release encompasses 35 territories with the notable exception of Pakistan, where the Central Board of Film Certification has ordered cuts of several scenes which reportedly show Muslims in Kashmir in a poor light.
Kumar plays Jagdishwar Mishra, aka Jolly, a blunt yet compassionate and struggling lawyer who dreams of becoming a big-time attorney. When he takes on a murder case he finds himself in the center of an elaborate police cover-up. He fights a case against ruthless advocate Mathur (Annu Kapoor) while dodging bullets and keeping corrupt, blood-thirsty cops at bay. Qureshi plays Jolly's wife and Shukla reprises his role as a judge.
The film generated plenty of headlines in the past week after an advocate filed a petition in the Bombay High Court objecting to scenes which he alleged mocked the judicial system and asking for the letters LLB to be removed from the title. After a three-person panel watched the film the Court ordered the deletion of four scenes including a lawyer jumping on and off the judge's dais and his client hurling a shoe at the judge.
Kumar is on a hot streak after starring in three films which each racked up more than 100 crore ($15 million) last year: Housefull 3's 109 crore ($16.3 million), Rustom's 127.49 crore ($19.1 million) and Airlift's 128.1 crore ($19.4 million). No other Bollywood star had three 100 crore-plus hits last year or has headlined four films in a little over 12 months.
Bollywood Hungama's Joginder Tuteja predicts Jolly LLB 2 will have a bigger first day than Airlift's 12.35 crore ($1.8 million) and Rustom's 14.11 crore ($2.1 million) and could even surpass Housefull 3's 15.2 crore ($2.3 million).
An opening of that scale would give the film an excellent shot at becoming Kumar's seventh 100 crore-plus hit, equaling the record of Shah Rukh Khan.
