Jolly LLB 2 Budget:

The film has been made on a budget of approx 78 crores including production cost and marketing (63+15). Akshay Kumar has taken around 35-40 crore as his fee otherwise costs are on the lower side. The producers wanted a big star for the sequel so they have spent a lot if we compare it to Subash Kapoor's previous films.

Jolly LLB 2 Screen Count:

Jolly LLB 2 is expected to release in approximately 3200 screens which is a very good number. The makers are still finalizing the screens so the actual number will be updated later.

Jolly LLB 2 Economics:

The producer will be able to recover most of the investment through selling music, satellite and digital rights. However it will still need a good run for recovering the costs.

  • Satellite Rights: 35 Cr
  • Music, video and other rights: 12 Cr
  • Overseas: 16 Cr
  • Recover Costs: 85-90 Cr
  • Hit: 95 Cr
  • Super Hit: 125 Cr

May be its because the budget is including Akki's fee..Most of the films like Raees, Dangal you wont see Actor's fee included in the budget as they himself are the producers? Just a guess

Jolly LLB 2 movie review: Mi'lord, Akshay Kumar film is a cracking watch

Jolly LLB 2 movie review: Akshay Kumar's film is a pure win. It has a solid plot, a strong sense of time and place and rhythm, and a message that is delivered without sanctimony.

Jolly LLB 2 movie rating: 3.5 stars

Jolly LLB 2 is the kind of film Hindi cinema used to make at a time when its primary activity was to tell a rousing tale, using star power to embellish it.

This sequel of Jolly LLB, infinitely superior to the first, brings back the joys of watching a movie with a solid plot, a strong sense of time and place and rhythm, and a confidence in itself that has been missing from Bollywood. Yes, there a few dips, and some slips, but on the whole, this Akshay Kumar-starrer is a win.

It engaged me right from the first frame. And though you know exactly how it will end, there are enough good performances, and enough heft to keep us with it.

Kanpur-wale Jagdishwar Mishra aka Jolly (Akshay Kumar), now a Lucknow-nivasi, is lawyer-in-the-making. Which means that Jolly is just the kind of shifty individual who will indulge in just the kind of dodgy activity to help him cross the hump, from a 15th assistant of a snooty senior advocate to a vakil' in his own right, with his own chamber.

But you also know that this Jolly will see the path of truth sooner vs later, and set out to slap the bad guys into submission. Not with the kind of kicks and slaps that we've got used to from Akshay's actioners, but the sort of colourful verbal sparring that lawyers engage in, dotted with some hilarious throwaway lines which the star generously shares with his terrific co-stars, especially Saurabh Shukla and Annu Kapoor.

Jolly LLB 2 review, Jolly LLB 2 movie review, Jolly LLB 2, Saurabh Shukla

The former is an unalloyed delight, even better than he was in the first film. I'd go so far as to say that if Shukla weren't in it, it would be a lesser film. Kapoor, as the mendacious legal eagle who will go to any extent to further his cause (first his, and then his clients'), is excellent, too.

So are the supporting acts. Huma Qureshi, who pops up once in a while, before the script forgets about her, fits right in as Jolly's angrezi-swigging-biwi'. Kumud Mishra as the thoroughly bad cop is a nice change of image for this amiable actor.

See in pics | Jolly LLB 1 Arshad Warsi loved Jolly LLB 2 Akshay Kumar so much, he watched the film twice

And the film putters along nicely on the brawny shoulders (revealed when the star has to endorse his brand of baniyan', tsk tsk) of its star. Akshay dials down the ready-for-all-comers sharp action hero persona and dons a thick-moochwala fella who wants to get ahead, but has an innately noble streak, enough to save him. We see him doing stuff that superstars do not " a great scene which has Jolly slaving at the gas stove and his wife seated at the dining table, will kick start a conversation around gender role reversal, I predict, because, you know, star and all " and show a weak streak before conquering it.

There are problems, of course. The one time I checked out was in a song which has Akshay and Huma do the boogie-woogie. Why, why? When everything else is going swimmingly along? Throw all superfluous gaana-bajaana out, I say.

Also, though we like that this film is not inherently scared of drama, and it fully embraces its dramatic bits " something else that's gone missing from today's Bollywood " it does fling in contrivances which take away from the core strength of the film. Especially towards the end, which gets stretched, and a trifle preachy about Hindu-Muslim ekta and bhaichara.

Also read | Jolly LLB 2 audience reaction: Akshay Kumar gets thumbs up from public

But I'm happy to ignore those bits because it does go bravely where few films do: send across a message without it feeling grafted on, about religious amity, and probity amongst a profession which has been buried under lies and corruption. The way it's done, the message gives it meaning minus sanctimony.

Jolly LLB 2 is a cracking watch, despite its few squelchy parts. Aur yeh lock kiya jaaye, mi'lord.

Jolly LLB 2 Review | Entertaining As Well As Hard Hitting

February 10, 2017
SHARE

Rating: 3/5 Stars (Three stars)

Star Cast: Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Sayani Gupta

Director: Subhash Kapoor

What's Good: Jolly LLB's sharp dialogue and a strong cast is what makes this film a stunner. Not a dull single dull moment here.

What's Bad: In the second half, the film goes slightly overboard with drama.

Loo Break: Interval is enough.

Watch or Not?: Akshay Kumar fans and Jolly LLB fans both will be satisfied with this film that has a mix of comedy, emotion and some serious commentary on judiciary system.

User Rating:

101 Votes

Jagdishwar Mishra aka Jolly (Akshay Kumar) is a struggling lawyer who makes his living assisting a big time Lucknow lawyer and also by taking up small cases individually.

His wife, Pushpa (Huma Qureshi) on the other hand, enjoys her drink but is immesely supportive of her husband.

After accidentally messing up with Hina's (Sayani Gupta) case, Jolly's conscience takes a beating and he decides to bring her justice.

He is set to fight against established lawyer, Mathur (Annu Kapoor) while Sundar Lal Tripathi (Saurabh Shukla) is the judge in charge.

A complicated case that revolves around terrorism, corruption and fake encounters becomes a tough affair for Jolly.

Will he be able to unearth the truth is what is left to see.

Jolly LLB 2 Review: Script Analysis

Subhash Kapoor had taken us by surprise with Jolly LLB. While the first film got immense appreciation, the expectations from this one were sky high.

The sequel promises to be fun affair that gets serious at the right junctures. Dealing with a plot that revolves around terrorism and corruption, there is much fodder for the makers to latch on to for entertainment.

Dialogues are quirky and towards the second half, they even become emotionally hard hitting.

Courtroom scenes are well written, except I found, the whole Manish Malhotra lehenga for the judges daughter part slightly unnecessary.

Also, the transition from Jolly's small time cases to handling a biggie here is not shown in details. His preparation is kept aside, we seem him romancing to Baawra Mann instead.

The portrayal of Indian judiciary and mainly how things progress in lower courts is quite rightly done here.

Kapoor's sharp dialogue towards the end on the statistics of pending cases and lawyers in India is appalling.

Kapoor once again succeeds in making a film that hits the right notes with a mix of light moments and hard hitting realism.

Jolly LLB 2 Review: Star Performance

Akshay Kumar is a delight as Jolly. He fits the role perfectly and pulls off the role of transitioning from a schemer to somebody who takes justice seriously is brilliant. He particularly excels in the scenes where he has a face off in court with Annu Kapoor's character.

Saurabh Shukla is the best thing that happens to this film. His act of judge Sundar Lal Tripathi is beyond compare. With great ease, we see him do goofy things like dance to Gulaabo', call Alia Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt'a greatest contribution and also resume a court session at 3 Am.

Annu Kapoor too does a decent job as Mathur, a true Lucknowi laywer.

Huma Qureshi is alright in her role of Jolly's wife, Pushpa.

Sayani Gupta has a power packed cameo. In the two scenes that she performs, she leaves a strong impact.

It's a delight to see Kumud Mishra in a negative role for a change. Considering the actor that he is, we love him for what he pulls off here too.

Inaamulhaq has a small cameo that turns out to be an interesting twist.

Jolly LLB 2 Review: Direction, Music

Subhash Kapoor handles too many departments for this film such as story, direction and screenplay.

His story is spot on and laden with powerful dialogues. In terms of direction too, Kapoor turns out to be impressive with a local setting that is easy on the eyes. The Kanpur-Lucknow city locations and the courtroom scenes have been well shot. One of the best scenes is when the defense lawyer Mathur and judge Tripathi sit for dharna in the court overnight and everyone at court is seen snoring. That's one amazing take on Indian judicial system and how it's usually on snooze fest.

Be it, the bad lighting conditions at a court or a lawyer's assistant presenting packages to customer saying a Gold package for 50 lacs means a sure shot clean chit from court, are small but powerful scenes that Kapoor cleverly directs.

The only problem is that while introducing humor into this tale, Kapoor's anchor shifts and one finds him struggling to get to the point. The climax is slightly stretched and especially a forced emotional drama involving Mathur's character is boring.

Music is good but Go Pagal could have been kept a little shorter. Baawra Mann is a beautiful track but its ill-placement in the plot may irk you.

Jolly LLB 2 Review: The Last Word

Jolly LLB 2 is entertaining as well as hard hitting. Saurabh Shukla is a stunner while Akshay is once again at his best. A 3/5 for this film.

Jolly LLB 2, starring Akshay Kumar and Huma Qureshi in the lead roles, is the big Bollywood release this week. Will the sequel to Jolly LLB match up to the first film? Here is our Jolly LLB 2 movie review.

Jolly LLB 2 Director: Subhash Kapoor

Jolly LLB 2 Rating:4 Star Rating: Recommended4 Star Rating: Recommended4 Star Rating: Recommended(3.5/5)

Jolly LLB was a jolly good movie. A little film by Subhash Kapoor, Jolly LLB was shouldered by actors like Arshad Warsi and Saurabh Shukla. Actors, not stars. So when a second film in the franchise is announced, and an Akshay Kumar is attached along with it, it sort of brings about mixed feelings in people. On the one hand, while a star comes with expectations along, there's somewhere a shred of regret at seeing yet another tiny film being hijacked by a star. But Kumar doesn't let his stardom overshadow his performance.

In the courtroom drama called Jolly LLB 2, Jagdishwar Mishra aka Jolly (Akshay Kumar) is the lead actor. Jolly LLB 2 is generously peppered with one-liners that deserve to be repeated. Most of these high-voltage lines are mouthed by the film's pivot, Justice Sunderlal Tripathi (an inimitable Saurabh Shukla). Shukla brings his humour and straight-faced dialogue-delivery from the first Jolly LLB, including slight references to it. However, this is a different courtroom. This is Lucknow and you're told "Muskuraiye, Aap Lucknow mein hain," even as goons blow bullets through your brains.

Jolly moves out of the shadow of his employer Rizvi Sa'ab and opens his own chamber. He takes money from a heavily pregnant client (Hina, played by Sayani Gupta), looking for justice for the death of her husband. Jolly lands right in the middle of a tragedy in the process. Nightmares rob him of sleep and he decides to file a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) and begins fighting the case.

His adversary in this Lucknow court is big-shot advocate Mathur (Annu Kapoor). Mathur symbolises all your lawyers who are driven to nondescript courts in flashy red Range Rovers. The intimidating, rich lawyer vs the underdog. You get the drift.

ALSO READ: Bombay High Court orders deletion of four scenes from Akshay Kumar's Jolly LLB 2

At its core, Jolly LLB 2 is the story of the condition of courts in the country, much like its predecessor. Akshay Kumar is the driving force of this drama. Director Subhash Kapoor doesn't do enough to extract the best of Akshay's comic timing. But there are enough to get by. Saurabh Shukla's dialogues make you break into a laugh every now and then. The man steals the show.

Jolly LLB 2 feels stretched at times. It is a crowd-pleaser alright, but director Subhash Kapoor goes overboard with melodrama at certain points in the film. The film could have been a lot tighter and streamlined had the filmmaker concentrated on just the case. But no. It is an Akshay Kumar film. So you HAVE to have Akshay Kumar delivering lectures on patriotism in the courtroom. You have to have Akshay Kumar taking bullets on duty. You have to have Akshay Kumar breaking into song and dance at the drop of a hat, right when he's out of the hospital, ad nauseum. Well, you do need the whistles for Kumar too.

Jolly LLB 2 leaves you with a strong sense of deja vu. Annu Kapoor is among the weaker points of the film. Kapoor's character is tolerable to a certain point before saturation hits you like a bus. Huma Qureshi doesn't have much to do in Jolly LLB 2. The supporting cast is chosen well.

The charm of this film lies in the details. Scenes like Saurabh Shukla discussing his daughter's wedding lehenga on the mobile in front of a board asking people to not use mobiles inside the courtroom are brilliant. There are little things here and there that are extraordinarily done. The music is not impactful. Jolly LLB 2 would have been the same even without the numerous songs.

The paan and people of Lucknow are captured well on camera. Kudos to Subhash Kapoor for making his Jolly LLB 2 on a believable plot. These are all real cases we have seen, heard of, grown up with. From references to Sunny Deol to what actually goes on inside a courtroom, Jolly LLB 2 has it all.

Jolly LLB 2 review: Akshay Kumar, Subhash Kapoor pull off emotional resonance in a patchy film

Anna MM VetticadFeb, 10 2017 14:18:06 IST

Cast : Akshay Kumar, Annu Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla, Kumud Mishra, Sayani Gupta, Manav Kaul, Inaamulhaq, Sunil Kumar Palwal, Ram Gopal Bajaj, V.M. Badola, Vinod Nagpal, Huma Qureshi

Director
Subhash Kapoor

Director Subhash Kapoor's Jolly LLB was one of the best Hindi films of 2013.

It was that rare Bollywood venture that journeyed into an Indian courtroom with realistic storytelling rather than manufactured high-decibel dialoguebaazi, drawing humour and melodrama from true-to-life situations and through the medium of some of the industry's finest actors led by the inimitable Arshad Warsi. That is an intimidating legacy to live up to.

It goes without saying then that Kapoor has put his neck on the line with Jolly LLB 2, resurrecting a successful title, shifting the action from Delhi to Lucknow and upping the stakes by casting a superstar as his protagonist. Two questions are crying out to be answered here: Is Part 2 as good as Part 1? And is Kumar as good as Warsi? Patience, dear readers, patience!

Akshay Kumar in Jolly LLB 2. Image from Twitter.

Kapoor - who is credited with the story, screenplay, dialogues and direction of Jolly LLB 2 - sets the film in Lucknow where Jagdishwar Mishra a.k.a. Jolly (Akshay Kumar) works as an assistant to the veteran lawyer Rizvi (Ram Gopal Bajaj). A tragic incident prompts Jolly to set aside his casual dishonesty and metamorphose into a formidable legal activist.

The case that has this transformative effect on him involves a pregnant widow seeking justice for her wrongfully killed husband, a fake encounter, police corruption, a deliberate mix-up of identities, judicial indifference, Kashmir politics and more. Individually, these are explosive ingredients. And in bits and pieces, the film is credible and has emotional resonance. It fails to come together though because of the inconsistent writing.

Keep in mind that the hero of the first film was initially ignorant, often unprepared, lazy and consequently amusing, but he was not a fool. The Jolly of this new story is well-intentioned, but the weakness of his arguments, the glaring lacunae in the evidence he presents in court throughout (even after he has seemingly matured as a lawyer) and the loopholes in the demands made by the opposing counsel seem invisible not just to him but to the writer too.

Are polygraph tests admissible in a court of law? If a lawyer facilitates a prisoner's escape, should it not strike him that presenting the escapee as a witness in a case could be problematic? These are just a couple of the questionable situations the film presents. There are more, which are dealt with in such a way that it is hard to figure out whether it is Jolly's lack of experience that prevents him from effectively citing the law in court or he is actually unaware of it.

Making matters worse is Jolly LLB 2's seeming indecision about the tone it wishes to strike: realistic or marginally revved up. It does not help that songs are needlessly injected into the proceedings, the worst of them being a tuneless Holi number that completely disrupts the mood of the narrative.

Akshay Kumar deserves some praise here for not allowing his starry swagger to rear its head except in the song n' dance routines.

His Jolly is not quite as charismatic as Warsi's lawyer was in the first film, but he is interesting enough. Kapoor too must be commended for not allowing the storyline to be overwhelmed by such a major star's presence.

The supporting cast is a parade of theatre stalwarts and seasoned character artistes from films. My pick of the lot, as with Jolly LLB, is Saurabh Shukla playing the eccentric judge, Sunder Lal Tripathi, whose veneer of idiocy camouflages his don't-mess-with-me attitude.

That said, Shukla is not as memorable here as he was playing the same character in the previous film. The difference between him in 2013 and 2017 is a reminder that actors do not function in a vacuum in films: great performances are born of great acting extracted by great screenplays and great direction.

Jolly LLB 2, as it turns out, is a mixed bag. The references to the Kashmir conflict and Hindu-Muslim tensions are impressive because the film raises these crucial issues without being in your face about them. The basic outline of the story is teeming with potential. When it's good, Jolly LLB 2 is pretty moving. Sadly, the patchy treatment leaves it sagging too often.

So yes, it pulls off humour and emotional resonance in places, but in the ultimate analysis those passages are a reminder of what might have been if more time and thought had been invested in the writing of this film. Jolly LLB 2 has its moments, but it ain't no Jolly LLB.
