My Imperfect Mr Perfect - Chapter 48
"What the?!" Arnav exclaimed. "Khushi what the hell are you on about? Why would you stay with Buaji from tomorrow?"
"Because the case is now over and I should go back to my house," Khushi said.
"This is your house damn it! And what do you mean the case is over so you can go home? Then what about us?" he gritted.
"But Arnavji it's not right for me to stay here anymore. I have to stay in Buaji's house until our marriage na?" Khushi said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Arnav froze as he heard the word marriage.'
"Khushi I don't believe in marriages. And you are staying with me. Period."
***************************************************
And this time it was Khushi's turn to freeze.
No marriage?! How can she stay with him without marriage?! That was against all the morals and values she was ever taught.
She didn't want to fight with him because she knew that if he didn't believe in marriages, there must be some reason or another for that.
"B-but Arnavji, why?" she asked, mustering up some courage. "Why don't you believe in marriage?"
"Because marriage kills the love between two people. It ruins their lives completely," was all he said, looking at the wall with his jaw set tight.
"But Arnavji why do you think that? Marriage is a sacred ritual that joins two people together. It's a life-long commitment that makes life beautiful. It... It gives them complete rights over one another..."
"Khushi no matter what you say, I am NOT going to marry you and spoil what we have," he said adamantly.
"But-"
"KHUSHI I SAID NO!!!" he yelled, making Khushi flinch, tears stinging her eyes hearing his harsh tone.
Hiding her tears from him by looking down, she got off his chest and lay on her side of the bed, facing the other side.
Arnav shut his eyes, inwardly reprimanding himself for being so harsh on her. But he just couldn't even think of marrying her. Because what they shared right now was the most beautiful thing he'd ever experienced, and he would not let a fake institution like marriage ruin it.
"Khushi," he called out softly.
But there was no reply.
Khushi simply lay still with her eyes closed. There was no point in talking to him, she knew. He wasn't even ready to listen to her point of view. And neither was he ready to tell her what made him think this way about marriage. She was too tired to try and fight him on this.
"Khushi I know you're not sleeping," he said, desperately wanting to apologise to her... "Khushi, I-"
"Arnavji, it's been a very exhausting day for me as well as you. I'm very tired and I just want to sleep, and I think you should too. We can talk about all this later," she said softly, making sure that he couldn't see or hear the silent tears that now ran down her cheeks.
But Arnav wasn't stupid - although she tried to sound calm, he could hear the sadness in her voice. And why wouldn't she be sad? He'd shouted at her after all. For no valid reason.
He wasn't about to let her continue crying - he had to tell her why he was the way he was, he decided. It was going to be hard for him to relive it all, but he had to. For her. For him. For them.
"Khushi, Maa committed suicide because she got raped..." he said, tears stinging his eyes.
Khushi froze hearing that. Her Ratna Maa committed suicide?! And she was r-raped? She'd always wondered why she'd disappeared all of a sudden but never did she think that the answer would be so horrible.
"And the reason she got raped was none other than my father Khushi. He handed her over on a platter to those monsters," Arnav said, his tears now freely running down cheeks from the feeling of pain, betrayal and hurt.
Khushi immediately turned back around and threw herself into Arnav's arms, crying hearing the cruel reality.
Arnav held onto her for the life of him, breaking down completely remembering the painful cries of his mother as they'd ripped her apart. How helpless he'd been as a kid... unable to stop those monsters... his dad...
They didn't know how long they held onto each other as they both cried - maybe minutes, maybe hours... All they knew was that the other was their only support and they both held onto their support with all their might, letting their pain out.
When both of their cries had quietened down a little, Arnav started speaking.
"Maa and my father came from a small village. They were one of the few people who had actually gone to school and later onto college and university." Khushi kept hugging Arnav as she listened.
"Somewhere along the line, they both fell in love with each other. But their parents didn't accept their love. So they ran away to the city. Dad had his degree and managed to find a decent job there. Soon he managed to start up his own business with the help of a few friends he'd made. Everything had been going good up until then, but once the fame kicked in, things started going downhill at home. He made friends with the wrong people, who brainwashed him and used him for their purposes. They were all around him for his money, but listening to them, he would fight with Maa, accuse her of cheating on him, he started drinking alcohol, and he just wouldn't listen to Maa for anything."
"His own stupidity led to his downfall. He lost his business - the very people who he listened to and considered his friends, cheated him and took everything off him. When we were left penniless, no one came to our help Khushi. No one."
"My father had turned cruel Khushi, but Maa always loved him. Through thick and thin. Even when he'd lost everything, she still stood by his side, trying to support him."
"All of a sudden, one day he came home saying that he'd gone back to the village they'd come from... And that the people there were willing to help them out. For that they would have to visit the village and stay there for a few days. Maa was so happy Khushi - not only because he found a job but also because she would get to see all her people there... She was sad that she wouldn't be able to meet you at the temple for a few days - she was worried for you. But she thought it was only going to be 2/3 days. Throughout the whole journey, she was talking so happily about their old memories there. Even dad seemed happy and was joining in, telling me about his memories. I didn't know then that that would be the last time I would see Maa smiling."
"We should have known something was off when the car stopped at the outskirts of the village, rather than the centre of the village where all their families lived. The area was deserted, and dad led us inside the only house situated there. When we went inside, the living room was empty, but then we heard people talking from one of the bedrooms. Dad went towards the room, with us following behind. When he knocked on the door, a man opened the door and behind him there were about 15 men in there Khushi." Arnav couldn't speak with the lump in his throat.
Khushi tightened her arms around him, not sure whether she was trying to give him strength or whether she was trying to gather strength for herself.
"One of the men handed over some cash to my dad and before we knew it, dad pushed mum inside and told her to do as they say' and closed the door from outside himself. I knew something was wrong the minute I saw those men, and my suspicions were confirmed with mum's screams for dad. I tried to run towards the room, but my dad stopped me. I tried to fight against him, but at that age, he was so much stronger than me and I just couldn't escape. He just kept saying that we could live happily as a family after these 2 days. Maa's screams of agony still echo in my ears today, Khushi... And I couldn't even do anything..." Arnav cried his heart out.
"One by one, each man would come out after an hour or two. Every time a man came out, they would give my bas**** of a dad money before leaving. I was helpless Khushi. I shouted, yelled, screamed, but nothing helped. I tried to fight off the man but I couldn't. Those monsters ripped her apart mercilessly for a whole day Khushi. And they would have tortured her longer had she not managed to barely escape and commit suicide," he cried.
Khushi clutched at his shirt, sobbing into his chest thinking of the agony Ratna Maa was forced to go through. She had been such a soft, loving woman, and she'd ended up being ruined in the cruellest way possible.
"That was the day the playful, innocent Arnav died Khushi. That day changed my whole life. I realised that the man I'd loved all my life, my so called hero, my father was a devil in disguise all along. And that's what hurt most - that one of the people I'd loved the most, had betrayed me and mum in the worst way possible. And that's when I decided that I wouldn't love anybody in my life the way I loved my mum or dad. That's when I decided that this world is full of cruel people who use others for their benefits and then throw them away like trash. That's when I decided that I hated the term marriage' because it was only a word that tied two people together for a life of misery and betrayal."
Khushi didn't try to argue with him - she couldn't. Not after the experience he'd been through. Although he was generalising all marriages, which was wrong, his horrible experience with his parents justified his view on the whole thing. After all, he was young when it all happened and when a thought is drilled deep enough into a child's mind, it stays with them for a very very long time and shapes who they become. After his dreadful experience, of course he would hate love and marriage!
Khushi cried for the mother figure they'd both lost. She cried for the boy who lost his innocence at a young age. She cried for the man who lived devoid of happiness for so long...
Both Arnav and Khushi cried for hours, holding onto each other, seeking solace from one another... They themselves didn't know when they both fell asleep, the stressful day taking a toll on them...
***
Khushi was the first one to wake up the next morning - it seemed that they had slept through the whole day yesterday. Both the physical and emotional stress had drained them both and they'd ended up sleeping through the whole evening and night.
When Khushi first awoke, the first thing she felt was a heavy weight on her chest.
She opened her eyes to find Arnav's cheek resting between her bosoms, his hands wrapped around her waist as he slept like a baby hugging his mother for comfort.
A wave of tenderness washed over her as she gazed at him. Fate had been very cruel to him, taking away his parents from him at a young age. Not only did he lose his parents, but he lost his security, his ability to love, his happiness, his innocence... He lost so many things that no child should lose at that age...
Knowing that she was starting to bring out all those things now, made her feel happy. He'd told her yesterday that he wanted to live happily now, because of her. Them.
And that just made her want to give him more. Much more happiness than he would have ever expected in his life. And she would, she decided. She would give him all that and more.
If he wanted her to stay with him without marriage then she would, she decided.
That would be giving up all her childhood dreams of a beautiful wedding, but that dream didn't seem bigger than his happiness.
And anyways, when she thought about it now, she'd being staying alone with him all these months... Sharing the same room... Sharing the same bed... Hugging him... Kissing him... Almost letting him make love to her... In fact, she had been the one to ask him to make her his... And she knew that she wouldn't have stopped him even if he did take it all the way that day...
So why would it matter whether she married him or not? Her happiness lay with him, marriage or not. So she wouldn't force him for anything until he himself feels comfortable with it.
No, she wasn't completely letting go of her dream to get married. But she was ready to let go of the idea in the near future - even if that is for a year or two. She was ready to make a life with him and give herself up to him now. She was sure that with time, he will soften up to the idea of marriage, just like he did with love.
Being a man who'd given up all hope for love, he hadn't even seemed to struggle to get those words out when he first confessed to her.
She still remembered how he'd pulled her up into one of the rooms in Sheetal's house, pretending as though he was angry at her.
*Flashback*
As soon as he closed the door behind them, a confused Khushi asked, "Arnavji what's wron-"
But she couldn't complete her sentence because Arnav had slammed his lips against hers, engulfing her into his arms.
Although Khushi had been taken aback for a moment, it didn't take her long to respond just as eagerly.
And soon their hands were all over each other, desperately trying to get closer as their tongues and lips duelled in passion.
Arnav and Khushi were so lost in each other, that they both completely forgot that they had people waiting for them to return downstairs.
When they eventually pulled away, it took a few moments for them both to come out of the sensual haze that had surrounded them.
"What was that for?" Khushi asked, breathlessly.
"I love you," Arnav confessed, his breath caressing her lips.
Khushi froze on the spot.
She blinked several times, trying to process what he'd just told her.
"Huh?" It was as though Khushi's brain was rejecting those words for some reason.
Arnav cupped her face and gave her a smooch, before repeating against her lips, "I love you."
But that did not help at all - Khushi was still in a daze, not sure if she'd heard right. She just looked at Arnav's face questioningly, not knowing what else to do.
Arnav smiled seeing her state.
"I. Love. You." He punctuated each word with a kiss, before he started raining kisses all over her face and neck, repeating the magical words over and over.
*Flashback Ends*
Khushi blushed at the memory...
Their love had won over his hate for affection... And she was sure that one day, their love will overcome his hate for marriage too. And she will wait for that day... But she wouldn't deprive them both of their happiness until then either. She will live with him like he wants her to.
She would handle Buaji and Payal somehow, she decided.
Just as she'd made her decision, she felt Arnav start to wriggle as he started to open his eyes.
She stroked his hair, making him sigh happily, his warm breath caressing her bare skin.
Placing a kiss on the top of her breast, he said sleepily, "I want to wake up like this, every day of my life..."
Hugging him close to herself, she said, "And you will..."
They lay there like that for a while before Khushi asked, "Shall we go to Buaji's house now?"
Arnav looked up at her uncertainly, scared that she was going to leave him...
Seeing his vulnerable look, she decided to tell him of her decision, "I'm going to stay with you. I'll handle Buaji and Jiji."
