Here's a movie that's trying too hard to move you
Rock On 2 strengthens my belief that it's never a good idea to make a sequel unless there's some unfinished business that the world needs to know about.
The second instalment of the hit 2008 musical Rock On!!, starring Farhan Akhtar, Shraddha Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Purab Kohli, seems terribly contrived and insipid. It isn't backed by a solid script.
The magic and charm that were evident in the original film, which chronicled the reunion of a college band, Magik, are missing in its sequel.
Akhtar returns as the lead singer Aditya Shroff. He has turned into this remorse-filled recluse who gives up on music because he blames himself for a freak suicide of a young man. A tortured soul, he has cut himself off from the world and prefers to do philanthropy in a village in the North East. There's a voice over by actor Purab Kohli, who's the drummer from Magik, explaining the changes in an annoying philosophical tone. Rampal, who was the poor, romantic soul of Magik, is now the owner of a swanky nightclub and a reality TV show judge. They are all doing well, except for the tragedy that seems to have fallen upon Shroff.
Once again, he's a tough nut to crack and his musician friends try to bring him back to the world of living. The dialogues that underline their camaraderie fill you with a nostalgic feeling. But their reunion lacks the same warmth. The twists seem forced and the introduction of the two new bandmates seem unnecessary. Kapoor plays the troubled, aspiring singer Jiah Sharma, who is repressed by a conservative father, who just happens to be a classical music maestro. Her internal struggles, somehow, leave you unmoved. It's not for her lack of trying, but it could be because she is trying too hard.
What is also surprising is that the band Magik, which hasn't done much work in the last eight years, continues to be relevant among music fans in India. Their clout in an industry filled with aspiring singers defies logic. How are they able to sway public opinion is an answer that will elude you.
There's also some poverty po*n thrust into the narrative, all to prove that music can be used for a charitable cause.
As far as performances go, every one does their bit but they are let down by a confused storyline. Watch this only if you are a Rock On groupie, otherwise skip it.

There is a life-defining sequence in the early part of this stylishly-cut film where the excellent Shashank Arora, playing a young struggling musician -- a sarod player in this day and age -- if you must know, pleads with the supremely accomplished Kumud Mishra playing a rigid musician, for a hearing. A request that falls on deaf ears because Guruji is a purist who believes music must not be tampered with to create a contemporary sound.
Ironically, this is what "Rock On 2", a worthy resoundingly successful sequel to the 2008 genre-defining musical, attempts.
It breaks the barrier of sound and drama to give us an experience that moves the feet and the soul, sometimes in unison. From the first frame, when we hear 'Killer Drums' KD (the very endearing Purab Kohli) trying successfully to regroup our thoughts on the band that we saw eight years ago, the sequel is on a winning streak, creating an immaculate balance between the past and present without straining to give credence to the characters' inner voices.
Early on, there is a superbly crafted sequence where the band members and their wives get together in Shillong. Conversations and singing just happens. It's just the way things are.
"Rock On 2" is rugged and engaging, with its dramatic core blending into the fabric of music, masti and 'magik' with an elan that suggests the birth of a significant new mainstream Bollywood director.
Shujaat Saudagar, take a bow, for bringing back the "Rock On!!" characters with such effortless expertise, and for adding new characters in and outside the musical band with a fluency that defies the limitations time necessarily imposes on works of pop art that are left out in the cold for too long.
Everything in "Rock On 2" fits. And fits without a squirm. Even the attempt to yoke a socio-political conscience into the musical format is not strained by over-kill. By situating a major part of the plot in Shillong and Meghalaya, the screenwriter has displayed exemplary dexterity. The narrative conveys a commanding comprehension of inter-personal dynamics.
The characters seem to 'belong' to their surroundings from long before the camera caught them on screen in postures of delightfully reposeful unselfconsciousness. This is as good a moment as any to say that the Belgian cinematographer Mark Koninckx has captured the characters' inner and outer worlds with the minimum of ostentation even when the band is on stage performing with a subtle swagger that leaves us hankering for more.
It won't be stretching the argument to say this film does for Meghalaya tourism what "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" did for Spain.
The conversations among the characters seem as lived-in as the music that they sing and share. This is partly because of the actors who, on the whole, are uniformly brilliant, at times more so than one would expect in a film where the music that is played and heard threatens to drown the more significant voices wafting through the windows of the frames.
Miraculously, what I carried home from the film was the silences that punctuate the music and the dialogues.
Every character seems to understand the need to stand back and let the music play without self-congratulation. Purab Kohli and Arjun Rampal slip into their characters as if they have not done anything else in the interim. These actors should be seen a lot more often.
Watch Arjun in the sequence where he talks about his childhood poverty, and when he gets on stage to play the guitar, you will wonder if Imtiaz Ali cast the wrong actor in "Rockstar".
Shashank Arora of "Titli" fame is a welcome addition to the team. As a struggling sarod player, he is a scene stealer. Farhan Akhtar dominates the proceedings. His character Adi is a complex compendium of shifting emotions, including guilt which plays a very important part in this segment of the franchise. In one sequence, where Shraddha's character tries to exonerate him of the guilt that haunts him, Farhan is deeply moving.
Shraddha, who has a vital role, succeeds in keeping her character of a repressed musician on a believable plane. But she tends to expose her limitations when pitched against Kumud Mishra who plays her father. A mention must be made of two new actors playing small but vital roles. Dinesh Kumar who plays a reality show contestant and Priyanshu Painyuli who unwittingly provides the film's most dramatic turning point, just slip into the film's mood of nostalgic sovereignty.
There is a story here of a sister rediscovering her dead brother's music which reminded me of the Anne Hathaway starrer "Song One", though not in any immediately recognizable way.
Come to think of it, "Rock On 2" is pretty much the most engaging and authentic sequel I've seen coming out of Bollywood in recent times. If as William Shakespeare volunteered, music is actually the food of love, then this film is a feast.

Read more about Farhan Akhtar
DIRECTOR: Shujaat Saudagar
STARRING: Farhan Akhtar, Shraddha Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli
A good sequel is one that starts from where the prequel ended and retains the essence of the original. Rock On 2 scores full marks in that department.
The film starts with the last stage performance of Magik and gradually takes us into the lives of each member of the band.
Shujaat Saudagar, in his debut movie, pieces together all his characters one by one, who are deeply affected by either a tragedy, guilt or success. It's interesting how Joe and Aditya seem to have exchanged not only their houses but personalities as well.
Joe (Arjun Rampal) is no longer a struggler. He is now a celebrity judge on a singing reality show and runs a club. He is self-assured now and has traded his sensitivity with Aditya's arrogance.
Aditya (Farhan Akhtar) has been fighting guilt for five years. One would think he would repent by helping young musicians instead he chooses to give up music and create Swades Part 2 in Meghalaya. It's a bit of a tangent but Farhan's acting chops come handy to make it all look believable. I especially liked how he played Aditya differently every time the movie went back in flashback. He also nails it in emotional scenes. Farhan knows how to keep it subtle and real.
The director largely refrains from infusing the narrative with Bollywood clichs but seems to submit to them briefly towards the end of the movie. It seems like the director felt the need to have some (forced) friction in a film that's mostly driven by emotions and internal struggles. Hence it looks a bit funny when a Northeast goon acts like he is from Haryana.
Besides Farhan, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli, Prachi Desai and Shashank Arora pack in decent performances. Shraddha Kapoor shows promise especially in her scenes with Shashank Arora. This indeed is one of her most restrained performances yet she doesn't portray Jia's pain who is dealing with a grave tragedy. She even gets an opportunity in an emotional scene, alas she screams too much to leave an impact. And the climax of Jia kaha gayi, let's dhoondo Jia' left me underwhelmed.
Kumudh Mishra as Shraddha's father as always is efficient but looks like Thakur from Sholay in that shawl he sports throughout the movie.
A movie that's about a rock band and has music as its theme doesn't promise a fabulous soundtrack. Some of the songs (The Wedding Song- You Know What I Mean) are forced into the narrative. The only time I felt happy was when Vishal Dadlani and Usha Uthup perform towards the end of the film.
Rock On 2 is a good attempt on following a band's story. We miss Luke's Rob but we do welcome the new band members who are effortlessly brought into the band.
Rock On 2, directed by Sujaat Saudagar, is a sequel to Rock On!! released in 2008 which later on became one of the cult musicals for its songs and a refreshing tale. So, when Rock On 2 was announced one questioned its relevance and need in today's time and age. A movie on rock music in 2008 seemed refreshing but this time, the director and the lead cast has nothing new to offer. Everything from the music to the storyline is quite unimpressive. Even a few songs which the movie has REFUSE to grow on you and then the filmmakers take refuge in creating Rock On' title track again coz you know, for the nostalgic value of it all.
The movie starts off exactly from where it left us five years ago. This time, the boys are a bit grown up with bigger issues to grapple with. Farhan Akhtar's Aditya Shroff (who is the lead singer of their band Magik) has turn into a recluse and is living alone like in the awe-inspiring, quaint locales of Meghalaya cut off from the human world. His friend KD (Purab Kohli) has a sucessful recording business who is also the narrator of the movie. Joe Mascarenhas (Arjun Rampal) is still SEXY AF and a very successful reality show judge. Shraddha Kapoor's character Jia' is introduced as a troubled soul who finds solace in music. She has daddy issues and a disturbing past to deal with. After much trepidation and efforts by KD these peeps come together to re-create the lost Magik' but do they succeed? Hell no. Shraddha has given it all to the role. She is a half decent singer but her acting abilities fail her especially in emotionally charged scenes. But yes, both Farhan and Shraddha share a chemistry throughout the movie, at times unwarranted.
The lead actors try hard to deliver but they are let down by shoddy script and a flimsy story-line. Also, in order to capture the generation gap' or map the crazy Twitter/ social media' influence, the director has goofed up with the plot. The crazy enthusiasm of youngsters mobilised by the social media portrayed in the movie is not believable and also trivialities grave issues of poverty and corruption rampant in the country. Yes, music binds all but the makers have not interwoven this concept with a strong plot and impressive music. So, the efforts falls flat and the message does not come across well.
Want to watch a movie this weekend? Please make do with Netflix. Rock On 2 is not even a one time watch. If you still want to, then please watch Rock On!! again coz trust me, the sequel has nothing new to offer you.
