Ajay Devgn has riches to boast about. In a career spanning 25 years, the actor has achieved immense stardom and delivered several box-office hits such as Son Of Sardaar (2012) and Bol Bachchan (2012), which he made under his production banner. But, as he chats with HT Caf, the Bollywood star comes across as a humble and simple man. Speaking of his wife, Kajol, and kids Nysa (13) and Yug (6), Ajay says they are a "typical middle-class family".

"That works for us. There are many times when Kajol and I don't approve of doing a particular thing for our children, but we are overruled by my mother (Veena Devgan). We live like a typical middle-class family, and I like those morals," says the actor.

From action to comedy, Ajay has explored different genres in films. When it comes to choosing roles, the actor reveals that he keeps in mind how his work will impact his family. "When I did Rascals (2011), my family members, friends and fans turned around and told me that they don't expect me to do such work. That time, I officially apologised in print, and said I will never do a film like that again. Such movies don't go with my image. But I'm not saying other actors shouldn't do such films," he says. Ajay adds that he won't take up a project that has a "vulgar script". "I go by my heart," he says.

The actor's most recent production venture is Parched starring Radhika Apte and Tannishtha Chatterjee. It revolves around the social injustices women in Rajasthan face even today. "I backed a film like that because at that time, nobody was ready to," says Ajay, adding, "People blame us for not making such films often. Why don't you (the audience) watch such movies more often, or why doesn't the media write about them?"

The actor adds that he is open to acting in women-centric films. "I acted in Lajja (2001). If there is a good character to play, of course we (the male actors) will do the film," he says.
