Veteran actress Smita Jayekar, last seen in Star Plus' Kashmeer (2003), marks her return to the small screen with Ek Thi Rajkumari on Zee Next in which she will be playing a vamp.
Smita, who feels that it has been 12 years since she did good work on tv, reveals, "I'm playing Rani Sanyukta, the mother of Rajkumari. I have kept my daughter in the palace for 18 years because long back this royal family had got a curse which will affect her and her mahal."
The actress is playing a negative character for the first time. About it, she says, "Years ago, I acted in a show called Adhikar – a Muslim based show wherein my character did have grey shades but it's for the first time that I'm playing a completely negative character. Though, I'm comfortable playing emotional roles, versatility is key for a good actor."
So what brings her back to the small screen? "Honestly speaking, television today is on par with films. A few years ago, I was busy doing films, thus I could never get time for television. I guess now is the right time to do one. I wasn't doing much work for a while thus it gave an impression that I've called it quits. For an actor, it's important that you're seen on the screen. Having said that I am not keen on doing saaas-bahu kind of roles as I myself never watch them," she declares."
Television apart, the actress will also be soon in Sooraj Barjatya's upcoming film Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi.
