MNS' open ultimatum to Pakistani artistes like Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan to leave India faced flak from some Bollywood filmmakers who expressed their displeasure. In the wake of Uri terror attack, the Raj Thackeray-led MNS asked Pakistani actors to leave the country immediately, failing which the shooting of their movies will be stalled. MNS issued an open letter and questioned Bollywood producers and production houses over their decision to cast Pakistani actors in their films. Taking a jibe at MNS, director Hansal Mehta tweeted, "MNS for next central govt. In one master stroke they have solved the India Pakistan problem. After all it is artistes who provoke attacks."

Vikram Bhatt said India should push for declaring Pakistan as a terrorist state than involving actors into the situation because that will "trivialise" the issue.

"We should concentrate on making sure that Pakistan is declared a terrorist state. That should be our effort. This (asking Pak actors to leave) is like trivialising the issue, whether artists or cricket should be allowed nor not...How does that matter? What matters is that people are dying, we have been constantly suffering... And the only thing we do is ban artists!" he said.

When asked if he thinks Pakistani artistes, working here, should take a stand on the Uri attack, Bhatt said, "I expect them to take a stand but can they do that? They are actors, creative people, not activists. I don't think they can go back if they are going to talk against the terrorist outfits in Pakistan. They would surely fear for their lives, might as well become Indian citizens then. I think they would really fear for their safety."

Film critic Mayank Shekhar said culture is apolitical and when government of India has given permission to Pakistani actors to work here, any other political outfit should not "spread fear" among people.

"Something which is cultural is by nature apolitical. But if it does become political as in this particular case, then that is the political decision that the authorities need to take. It can't be any particular outfit deciding to issue a diktat and everyone living under the fear of what they would do or would not do," he told a news channel.

Good! No one must target a completed film. If you want a ban then get the government to ban them from working in the future.

Fakhr-e-Alam, former chairperson of the Sindh censor board, has condemned the 48-hour ultimatum given by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to all Pakistani cine and tele-artistes to quit India or face consequences.
He says artistes do not favour violence, and feels that war is not the solution to conflicts and disagreements between India and Pakistan.
MNS Chitrapat Sena chief Ameya Khopkar told the media that there was "an anti-Pakistan" wave across India after the September 18 terror attack that left 18 Indian soldiers dead at Uri in Jammu and Kashmir.
Responding to the MNS ultimatum, Fakhr-e-Alam told, "War is not a solution to conflicts and disagreements. War-mongering, aggressive posturing and jingoism, just to get electoral gains and sweeping the dirt underneath the carpet, is just not constructive or positive."
Fakhr-e-Alam said that both India and Pakistan must show "responsibility and restraint and be careful on what narrative they want to build".
He also urged media on both sides to be "careful and introspect on how they want to score ratings".
"Artistes are never in favour of violence. People on both sides of the border have far greater problems than by being consumed by this madness," Fakhr-e-Alam said.
"We need to build bridges and not construct uncontrollable hatred on either side. We must seek common ground and engage in progressive dialogue," he added.
Among the Pakistani actors and singers known to be based in Mumbai or frequenting the city are Fawad Khan, Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam, Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Salman Ahmad, Mahira Khan and Ali Azmat.
Speaking at the press conference, MNS Vice President Shalini Thackeray said that wherever films or TV shows were being shot with Pakistani actors, MNS activists would go and stop them after the 48-hour deadline lapses.
In the past, the MNS and Shiv Sena have often adopted an aggressive stance against Pakistani personalities visiting Maharashtra.

MNS cine wing president: What if Pakistani artistes do recce for attacks?

MNS cine wing president Amey Khopkar explains logic behind the call for ban of Pakistani artistes

Amey Khopkar, Chitrapat Karmachari Sena head

Why are you asking Pakistani artistes to leave India?
Pakistan has always created trouble in India. The Uri attacks crossed all limits and we have decided not to spare anyone. If the Pakistani artistes don't go back, we will take action in our style.

What do you mean by "our style"?
We will beat them and send them back to Pakistan. We will also take strict action against producers if they work with Pakistani artistes.

What about Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (featuring Fawad) and Raees (with Mahira Khan) that've already been shot?
We won't allow them to release in Maharashtra under any circumstances. We don't need the services of Pakistanis.

Why target producers and production houses?
We have enough talent in our country, but they (producers) work with Pakistani actors to instigate us. Pakistani kalakaar toh maar khaayenge hi, hum yeh producer/ director ko bhi peetenge.

What do Pak artistes have to do with terrorism?
What if any of these Pakistani artistes does a recce and passes on information to terrorists for attacks?

Pak actor Sara Loren fears for her life after MNS threats

Murder 3 siren Sara Loren reacts after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) asks actors and artistes from Pakistan to leave India within 48 hours or be prepared to be "pushed out"

Sara Loren and Fawad Khan

Murder 3 siren Sara Loren was in the city when she heard of the Uri attacks. Little did she know it would affect her directly a few days later. Yesterday, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) asked actors and artistes from Pakistan to leave India within 48 hours or be prepared to be "pushed out".

The actress, who was in the city to fulfill her professional commitments, is alarmed by the party's stand against her and her fellow countrymen. "Art is the only field where the lines of nationalities blur. There are more fans of Fawad in India than in Pakistan; Pakistanis watch Bollywood more than home films and there are more Muslims here than in Pakistan. I understand, as artistes, we become the face of our country. Aggression against an attack of terror is legitimate. But, I feel equally bad about men who died in Uri.

I have lost my father and I know what the death of a loved one feels. Men in the Army, protecting us no matter which side of the border they stand on, command equal respect. But, why ban artistes? We too are with India in their time of sorrow. We earn our livelihood here and what a certain group of extremists does, doesn't change our sense of loyalty towards India," she says.

The actress who grew up in Kuwait shuttles between Dubai and Mumbai. The unwelcome vibe has taken her by shock, but she is trying to stay calm. "If things get bad, I will go to Dubai. I have a home there. When matters settle, I will come back. I fear for my life now, but I have full faith in cops. We need to fight terrorism, not each other. I pray and hope that an incident doesn't affect the friendly relations that we had formed with this industry," she tells us.

Murder 3 producer Mukesh Bhatt says, "We are entertainers, not politicians. Our job is to stay honest to our art. If the Centre gives us in writing that we cannot hire Pakistani talent here on, we would refrain from it. Bollywood is not running a social recruitment service. Only good actors are signed for our films. But, no matter what the stand of the State is on this, Indian producers should not be victimised. I propose that any Pakistani talent, whose film is nearing completing or up for release, should be spared. "

Notes of unity

Sukhwinder Singh performed before Indian and Pak jawans at the Wagah border two weeks ago as part of Shivaay promotions. He sang his popular tracks, including Chak De India and Jai Ho, and a couple of Punjabi numbers. "We should do everything we can to support those who protect us. Even the soldiers from the other side of the border were cheering and clapping. It was amazing," says Sukhi.

Art knows no nationality, says Shailja Kejriwal

Says Shailja Kejriwal, who introduced Fawad to Indian television

Shailja Kejriwal

At A time when Indian television was all about saas bahu sagas, Shailja Kejriwal, creative head of Zee, introduced Pakistani artistes Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan and Imran Abbas to the small screen audience with a string of popular soaps from across the border. Soon after, the trio broke into Bollywood's big league.

Three days ago, when an anti-Fawad blogpost went viral on social media, hitlist caught up with Shailja, who strives to bring the two countries closer culturally while the political air remains tense. She had said, "I don't think people look at art as Indian or Pakistani. There is no politics involved in appreciating stories that touch you on a personal level."

She says Fawad became an instant sensation and Karan Johar's mother, Hiroo Johar, was hooked to his shows. "I am sure she likes him as much as Ranbir Kapoor. I don't think anyone thinks about them as Pakistani or Indian. Today, it is gratifying to see both artistes in the same film (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil). This is the mainstream acceptance I sought.

In the hit Indian film Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Salman risks his life to take a little girl home to Pakistan. I am elated that Karan, Shah Rukh Khan (co-producer of Raees) and Salman are fearlessly taking on actors and subjects like these. They are leading the way. People on both sides of the border are applauding this. We should put our brains to good use and stop bloodshed."
