DevAkshi-ians!!! Here is Part Four of my OS. Happy reading!!

Divya (fanktlk) and for your input. (Especially in the Dev - Sona conversation) This part wouldn't have come out the way it did without you!!

Part Four

Dev leaning against the bonnet of his car was the first thing Sona saw when she stepped out of her office building that evening. He straightened when he saw her, the relief obvious in his eyes as he smiled and gave a small wave. She waved back and her smile was more open. She was happy to see him and couldn't hide it anymore.

"I thought we were meeting at the coffee place," she commented. He walked around to open the car door for her. "You thought I would change my mind," she stated.

With a rueful smile, he walked around to the driver's side and started the car, glancing at her to make sure her seatbelt was on. "You know me very well, don't you?"

"I thought I did."

Her sad tone reached and twisted his insides. He drove them to the restaurant. The same place they used to meet up at for their regular dose of coffee, coconut cookies and love. Awkward silence reigned after the waiter took their order and departed. Both waited for the other to break the silence. Both wanting to break it but lost for words. Where does one start? How do people deal in such situations, Sonakshi wondered. The high of falling in love, the heartbreak of knowing he would marry Natasha, the boundless joy of realizing he loved her too, the magical days, the rapturous nights filled with passionate phone conversations and dreams. His words had promised her the world. His words had crashed and crushed her to the ground. And now here they were. Once again. Searching for words.

"How is your job?" he asked finally.

"It's good," she smiled, determined to overcome her awkwardness. "It's a start-up company but finally got some funding so we're hiring more people now. Sir told me you'd signed the contract."

"Yeah. I have forwarded the details to my HR guys. They'll take care of everything." Sona nodded and left it at that. "Sonakshi?"

"Hmmm?"

"Are you still angry with me?"

"No." She paused. "I'm just very...I hurt," she said finally.

His eyes dulled. "I hurt too. I got no joy out of anything I said or did. the night I broke up with you will forever remain the worst night of my life."

"Then why do it?" she burst out. "Do you remember the promises you made? I remember them. Every single one of them. I remember them because you broke every single one of them in one shot that night. One hurdle and you dropped my hand like a hot potato. Like a useless piece of furniture."

"It had to be done that way or I would never have been able to do it. You were right when you said, yeh sirf aapka pyaar nahi hain. But it had to be done that way. In your medical language, like a band-aid being ripped out. If I had tried to sit and talk it out, I wouldn't have been able to do it. I wouldn't have been able to let you go. I didn't know...I still don't know why my mom couldn't accept you initially. Maybe because of the different cultures. Maybe because of the food habits. I don't know. But I always thought she did. She told me she did. But that night I realized she would rather end her life than live with my choice." His eyes filled up at the memory.

He swiped a rough, impatient hand across his face and tried to regroup. Sonakshi, sensing his struggle, remained silent, giving him time. "Sonakshi, if she had voiced her objections, I would have fought for us. I would have convinced her. No matter how long it took, I would have done that. I would have fought the world for you till the end of time. I would never have let go of your hand." His palm reached out to hers on the table instinctively before he fisted it and pulled back. "Never," he repeated. "But my mother was on her deathbed. To grab her and get her back, I needed both my hands and in that process I had to let go of your hand. I traded off my heart for her life. That was what I had to do at that time and that was what I did. And if I had to do it all over again, I don't know what I would do. What I should do. What would you do? What would you choose?" Inhaling deeply, he faced her squarely and looked into her eyes. "Your parent's life or your love?"

Sonakshi stirred her coffee almost absentmindedly, her thoughts in a whirl. Put it that way, did he have a choice? Would she have done anything different? "My parent's life," she answered. She tried to pick up her coffee mug but gave up trying to imbibe anything. Her throat felt so tight she'd probably choke on the hot brew. "I would have chosen my parent's life but I would have stood by that decision. I wouldn't have stalked you. I wouldn't have interfered in your professional or personal life. I wouldn't have cornered you into inviting me to your engagement, only to come there and create a scene," it was her turn to blink back her tears. "What I did that night was a crime too, I accept that. My parents didn't deserve that. Neither did Ritwik and his family. But what you did...!"

Dev nodded. "I know. I was beyond abominable. I said before too, you are strong Sonakshi. Far stronger than me. You would have stayed away. You would have collected the shattered pieces of your heart and tried to piece them back together again as best as you could. In fact, that's what you tried to do. But I couldn't do it." Pushing his coffee mug aside, he grabbed the water glass and emptied it. "You remember the night I'd called you? The night maa got discharged and I called to thank you? Remember?" Sona nodded. How could she forget!

"You'd said, humaara break up hochuka hain Mr Dixit. Aap jab chaahe aise call nahi karsakte. That...that was when it hit me. That was when it hit me what break up actually is going to entail. I wouldn't get to see you. I wouldn't get to hear your voice. Your laughter. Your smile. Your anger. Your tumi tumi...you. I wouldn't have you in my life. And I couldn't breathe Sonakshi. I started to suffocate. Do you know what it's like to live when you can't breathe? And seeing you was the only time I could breathe. Who was I fooling? I cannot live without you. So I became that horrid stalker you'd accused me of being. And once Ritwik entered the picture, I got scared. Because I knew. I knew if you moved on with him, I wouldn't get to see even that little of you. You would've gone completely out of my reach. So I tried to push him out of your life." His smile had a fair amount of self-loathing in it. "I did everything I could to make it happen but he was a good guy. He stood by you. He refused to be pushed. So I had to accept defeat. I had to accept the fact that you had decided to move on even though your heart is left behind with me. And I had to respect your decision and step aside. Out of your way. Out of your life."

Dev signalled the waiter to refill his water glass and emptied it in one go. When he looked like he wanted more, Sona slid her glass towards him. He picked it up but put it back on the table with a soft bang. "Whatever happened on the night of your engagement hadn't been a deliberate plan on my part to ruin your and your family's reputation. All I can ask is to believe me. Say you trust me."

He waited for her to say something. Anything. But she seemed lost in thought. Thoughts he had no privy to. Signalling for the bill, he paid for the untouched coffee and cookies and drove her to her home and got down along with her. With a mumbled, bye Mr Dixit, she turned to go and suddenly something in him just snapped. With a tortured whisper of Sona, he grabbed her arm, pulled her back and hugged her. Hugged her so tight to himself. Like he wanted to glue himself to her. Sona stood rooted to the spot. Not pulling away but not wrapping her arms around him either. The incompleteness of the embrace registered in Dev's mind. His grip slackened before his arms slowly dropped to his sides. His eyes deep pools of misery as he stood gazing at her wide, unblinking eyes.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean..." Taking a step back and then another one, he whirled and strode back to his car, leaving her standing at her door, staring at the disappearing taillights of his car.

****

Bijoy strode into his daughter's room, wanting to discuss the political issue in Bengal. The tears in Sona's eyes wiped off everything from his mind. "Shona? What happened beta? Why the tears? Did something happen? Did someone say something?"

Sona sat up from her hunched position on the bed and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. "Nothing baba."

"Shona..." he showed his palm in a mock threat. "No lying."

Sona tried to smile but her eyes teared up again. She wiped them, crawling closer to her baba. "I met Dev baba."

Bijoy's frown deepened. Anger surged forth. "Did he misbehave with you Shona? Tell me the truth."

"No baba. Not at all. In fact, he was very nice. He talked. He explained and apologized. I'm just...I don't know what's happening baba. I don't know what to think anymore, what to feel anymore. I don't even know what you guys think. One day you look like you hate him through and through and next day I see him have dinner with us. And he...the way he talked today, explained...I don't know what to..."

"Wait here. I'll be back." Bijoy got up and went out of the room.

Yes, she was confused. She didn't know what she wanted anymore. She couldn't stay angry at Dev anymore. It had gone down the day he had come and apologized to her parents. It went down another step when he made amends to Ritwik. And today...when he'd talked to her, the way he'd laid bare his heart, the grudge, the disappointment, the pain...all melted like ice on a hot pan. And when he hugged her, why hadn't she pushed him away? Why did she feel like hugging him back and crying her heart out? Why did she feel like pleading with him to never let go? Why? She still couldn't trust him, could she? Would she? Was she ready to trust him again? Did she want her second chance with him? He was her only chance at love and true happiness. Was she ready to let go of her fear and grab it...him, with both her hands and trust him not to let her go again?

Bijoy came back and gave her Dev's letter. "Read this. I think it will help you." He waited until she read it. Fresh tears glistered and slid down her cheeks. Tenderly her baba wiped them away. "We realized whatever he did, it wasn't intentional. That if he did hurt you, he hurt himself too. He broke your heart and his own. Then he faced us, accepted his mistakes and apologised. He respects you and your family. We saw how much he values the people around him. It doesn't matter whose family it is. Family is family. And he knows that. Believes that. He is not perfect. But he is not bad either." Sona rested her head on her baba's shoulder. He patted her shoulder. "We, your maa and I always gave you and Sourav the freedom to make your own decisions. Make mistakes, learn from your mistakes, pick yourselves up and move on. That has not changed, Sona. You still have the freedom to make your own decisions. If you think you should walk away, walk away. If you think he deserves a second chance with my daughter, I am with you in that decision too. Your maa and I will support you in whatever you decide. You don't worry about that. You just think about what you want. What you should be doing at this point of time. And that's it. Do it."

Sona wiped her eyes. Her lips tilted up in a beautiful smile that quickly reached her eyes, chasing away the sorrow. "You know what baba? I have the best baba in the whole world." Bijoy laughed and tweaked her nose. "Thank you baba."

The next day evening Dev glanced outside from the window of his office. It was a complete downpour torrent of rain that had started around lunch time and showed no signs of subsiding. He checked his watch and tapped his phone.

"Hello, Sonakshi, have you reached home?" he asked.

"No. The way it's raining here, the whole street is water-clogged. I called baba and he said he would come."

"In this rain? Are you kidding? Message me his number. I'll talk to him and then come and pick you up. You stay put until I get there, you hear me?"

"But..."

"No buts, Ms Bose!" Then as if realising he was probably throwing his weight around when he had no right to, he mellowed down. "I mean...please Ms Bose. It's not safe for him to come all the way. I am closer, right? I can help out."

The smile that had never been far away from her lips since that morning, widened. "OK," she agreed. "I'll message his number. But you don't come into this street. Your car will get stuck. I will wait at the junction."

Dev exhaled in relief. "OK but try to stay in the shade. I'll be there as soon as I can." With her drive safe echoing in his ears, he got Bijoy's number from her message and called him. "Sir? Dev here. Sona...I mean Dr Bose said you are going to pick her up. I am closer sir. I will pick her and drop her home. Aap ko woh raasta ulta padega aur ooper se yeh baarish. Please stay home. I will bring her back safe. Trust me."

Kharapa na, Bijoy thought to himself with a smile. Not bad. "Are you sure?" he asked, nevertheless.

"Yes sir, of course I'm sure. In fact, I'm just leaving my office," Dev said, picking up his jacket and grabbing his keys.

"Thank you Dev babu." Bijoy ended the call and removed his footwear. "Asha, chai!" He called out to his wife.

Dev drove as fast as the rain and the traffic allowed him to, the wipers on the windshield swishing continuously but the visibility was still low. He slowed down as he got closer to the junction where he was to pick up Sona and rolled his window down a little. He missed her the first time and had to circle back again and then he spotted her standing under a tree, holding the bag over her head but neither the tree nor the bag prevented her from getting completely drenched. Uncaring of the traffic, he braked the car as close as he could and honked, leaning sideways and opening the passenger door.

"Whoa, what a rain!" she exclaimed the minute she settled herself in.

"I told you to stay in the shade," he scolded, quickly removing his jacket to place it around her shoulders, turning on the heat in the car and passing on his hanky so that she could at least wipe her face.

"That was the only shade I could find!" she retorted without heat. "And now I'm ruining your car seat and your jacket!"

"To hell with..." he bit back the rest of the words and shifted the gears, merging the car once again into the rain-battered traffic. "You stop worrying about my car seat and jacket and focus on warming up. The heat is fine or shall I increase it?"

"No. This is fine. Thanks," she added after a small pause, resting her palms on the vents. The rest of the journey was mostly silent, Sona realizing he needed his complete focus on navigating the traffic in that rain, didn't try to make any small talk. And both heaved a sigh of relief when the car stopped in front of her house. Ignoring her protests, he got down and came around to help her out. Both of them, hunched down against the rain as they ran to the shade right outside her house. Even that didn't help much as the wind was blowing in all directions but at least they were out of direct impact.

"Now see, even you got wet," she grumbled, removing his jacket and returning it to him.

"What if you had slipped and fallen? The ground here is uneven," he retorted. "Now go inside and get dry."

Dev took one step back into the rain when his arm was held and pulled. He turned and found Sonakshi in his arms. His Sona. In his arms. Hugging him. Arms wrapped tight around his waist, cheek resting on his chest. Hugging him. Stunned, he could do nothing but stand there. Like a man turned into stone. Her arms tightened around his waist some more before she took a step back, releasing him. "Thank you Dev," she said.

He was scared to blink. Scared to breathe. Was he dreaming? Hallucinating? His eyes saw her walking towards her house. She was going to disappear! Panicked, he shouted, "Sonakshi!"

Sona stopped and turned. Neither seemed to care about the rain beating down over them. She waited for him to say something. When he didn't, she took a step closer. Another. Another. Until she was once again standing in front of him. The rain gave their eyes the perfect cover to hide their tears.

"Did you just...why did you...are you..." he gave up. "Don't go. Please," he finally whispered.

Dropping her bag on the wet ground, she stepped closer. Closer still. "Don't let me go. Please," she said just as softly.

When a rough exclamation, he dragged her back into his arms. "Never again Sona. Never again." He pulled back, cupped her face, scattering kisses all over her face. Forehead, eyes, cheeks, chin, lips. "Never Sona," he repeated with every desperate kiss. "Never again," he asserted.

The wild tempest of need for reassurance slowly subsided. Leaving behind a tranquil glow of contentment. Two broken pieces once again forming a whole. "Thank you Sonakshi," he whispered.

"I love you Dev," she whispered back. "I love you so much!"

****

As if amused by the havoc created by the rain the previous night and wanting to take a peek, the first rays of dawn fell over the city of Delhi. Clouds nowhere to be seen as the Sun rose from his deep slumber to brighten the skies. But the gleam paled in comparison to the sheer elation radiating from Dev's face. Did he dream all that, he wondered for a second. No. He didn't. He could still feel his Sona in his arms. All he needed to do was close his eyes and he could feel her. Fresh out of shower, clean shaved, hair-trimmed and neatly brushed, every inch the savvy entrepreneur ready to start his day and take on the world. With the love of his life right beside him, he thought with a grin. Pulling on a dark blue shirt but leaving it unbuttoned, he took his phone. Now he could call her whenever he wanted.

"Hello?" Elina answered the call before it completed one ring.

Dev frowned. "Hello? Uh, Elina?"

"Yes Dev. Sona has high fever and chills since late last night. She is still sleeping. Do you want me to..."

"Sonakshi has fever?" He swore silently. She had been standing in the rain for so long. First when he'd gone to pick her up and then again later! Damn! "I'm on my way. If she is sleeping, let her sleep. Don't wake her up," he said, quickly buttoning up his shirt, not bothering to tuck it.

"Actually..."

"Do you need me to get any medicines on my way?" he asked, grabbing the wallet and keys.

"Dev, Dev. Relax. She is fine. It's just a fever. She just woke up and..."

"Tell her I'm on my way and she can forget about going to work," he got down the stairs, making a beeline for the main door and his car.

"Arre Dev beta, breakfast is ready," Ishwari called out from the dining area.

He quickly walked up to his maa and bent down to take her blessings. "Not now maa. I'm off to Sonakshi's house. I'll eat something there."

Ishwari stood there, stunned, staring at her son's departing figure. Sonakshi's house? Without having the breakfast cooked by your maa?

****

Asha opened the door. "Arre Dev Babu, aap?"

He looked awkward for a second but plunged ahead. "Ji. Elina said Sonakshi has been running temperature. I just thought..."

Asha smiled and stepped aside in welcome. "Please come inside. Sona is upstairs in her room. This way," she gestured him towards the stairs. She smiled affectionately.

Shedding the last of his hesitancy, he grinned back at Asha and took the stairs that would take him to his Sona's room. To Sona's own little world. To his Sona. He found her reclining on the bed making faces at the mug in her hand. Grinning, he knocked on the open door once. "Good morning my Jungli Billi!" he greeted.

That's it for now. Hope you liked it. Do let me know. Awaiting your comments,

Love,

Suvika.

I had a lump in my throat while reading both the Dev-Sona convos, the one in the restaurant and the one in the rain. OMG, this so so amazing!!
WHY CANT THEY SHOW THIS ON THE SHOW😡😡😡
This makes so much more sense than the crapfest going on currently. Each and every character is behaving exactly the way they should in your story.
Dev scattering her face with kisses is the reaction Dev should rationally have when they get back together , considering all they've been through.
Arghh I'm so mad at the makers now!!
Can't wait for the next part
Thank you for writing this suvi, it's the only thing keeping me sane right now.
