I guess that a country would truly be independent when there are no rapes in it?

So is it some political statement against the ruling government? A patriotic statement for the upcoming Independence day or is it about some rape survivor?

Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan said that he wanted to see an India free of rapes at the launch of the trailer of his new film Pink in Mumbai on Tuesday. According to Indian Express, when asked about the significance of freedom today ahead of India's Independence Day, Bachchan expressed his desire that,"Bharat varsh rape se free ho".

Pink produced by Shoojit Sircar, will see Bachchan donning the role of a curt senior lawyer and is seen crudely cross examining a rape survivor in the trailer. But at the event, the senior actor said that violence against women especially sexual crimes needs to be dealt with severely in accordance to the law.

Lots of people say put the rapists out in the market and we will deal with him. But that doesn't go according to the law of the land. There is a law and you have to follow it. Sometimes you feel disillusioned by the outcome, sometimes you feel that the due procedure has been followed and this will continue but what is the base of all this. The base is somewhere we are losing respect for the female gender. And that can be remedied through education, and through films like Pink to give them the respect and honour and their right place in the society. That's what we are all working towards. It will take time but it will happen.

Education does not provide a remedy to the disrespect that women are given to be honest

He means that India will be truly independant when its pathetic and disgusting rape statistics go down or become Nil.
A country, or for that matter any country cannot be called independant if its women dont feel safe or independant, when they walk in fear of rape and molestation.

Maybe hes not the best person to say this given his own dubious history with industry women, but it needed to be said!
