I would rather be ignorant and be safe than take my chances and get hurt. This is what most people feel when it comes to rapes in India. Yes it happens everywhere in the world but the possibility of it happening in India particularly in northern places like Delhi significantly increases and so are the odds. It is no different than flying a plane and knowing it could crash vs flying a plane in a war torn country knowing people can shoot RPG's at you.
Recently a woman in US in a dollar store was asked to remove her hijab. She protested but the lady at the counter told her its for safety reasons because she dont know who it is and it is a high crime area. Yes it is discriminatory but I completely agree and do not think it was a bad call to practice safety and be dilligent.
We can either act like its a global problem and be on our way or focus on it as a real problem and address the rapists not just through enforcement but education -- education at homes and equality between a girl and guy and not looking at his misdeeds. I would gladly vouch for a sex offender registry in India where people once are on cannot find jobs, live in good neighbourhoods.
Actions needs to have consquences.
