Saw a documentary in discovery channel about this devdasis.still practiced in south India.currently there life is miserable.but once upon in ancient India they were the bearer if all sorts if classical dances and music.they used to do this and there children use to carry on the legacy.in fact famous orisi and bharatnatyan dance are the dance if devdasis .they used to perform in temples. They used to be under kings and leaders but slowly the system changed than all sorts if exploitation overtook.I HV known about these from my grandmother .I don't know how she knew but she told me as I used to learn bharatnatyam.she told that dancing and singing not considered good because it used to be done by these devdasis who used to work as proustite s also.sorry if anybody find this offensives but reality is different and nobody wants to either accept or watch on tv.
