Movie Review: Housefull 3

Thursday, 02 June 2016

Will the Housefull series complete a hattrick at the box office? As we await the verdict, here is City 1016's Lokesh Dharmani's review

A still from Housefull 3

DIRECTOR: Doubtful
STARRING: Hammers
RATING: Meh

I walked out of the movie. Trust me, I have watched worse. I have watched Gang of Ghosts, Jackpot. Wait Creature in 3 D. And all those films you didn't even know existed. So I have a decent tolerance for bad films. But I just couldn't sit through Housefull 3.

A story in films like these is a myth. It is sheer buffoonery that gets worse with every second, with every joke shamelessly copied from WhatsApp. Watching these films is like being added into those inane WhatsApp groups again and again that you have left multiple times.

The film starts with a beautiful aerial shot of Big Ben, London Eye and we know the setting. But that is not enough. The text rolls out on the screen- L.O.N.D.O.N. Thanks for telling. I would have never guessed. And if that was not enough, we see three men commit a major robbery wearing masks painted in English flag colours. Yes, dearest Sajid, Farhad, I have an IQ of a tortoise. Sorry. Can you please tell me which city your movie was shot in?

I couldn't quite decide what was more clever: the casting of three anglicised actresses in a movie based in London or their dialogues. Sample this: ''Kya aap table ke liye aaye hain?'' Is it their idea of a joke? I would let it pass if it was one odd joke. The film abounds with such gems.

Bahar latakte hain- Let's hang out.

Bandook ka beta- Son of a Gun.

Thandi dawai lo- Take a chill pill.

Every character has a strange way of humour. Riteish Deshmukh's character has a silly way with words too. ''Will you be my tawaiyaf...oops, I mean wife?'' Or "Aap mera nirodh karenge...matlab virodh karenge."

And then there was some solace as Jackie Shroff and his swag appeared on the big screen. Alas, solace hung itself to death as Jackie Shroff spoke. ATM- aaj tujhe marunga. BMC- bagal mein churi. No wait. How old is the writer of the film? 6? Sorry, my bad. I assumed the film has a writer.

Towards the end of Housefull 3, the girls confess in the church, feeling bad for a physically challenged young boy Simon being bullied by his friends. Wow. This is the mother of all ironies. Your entire film is nothing but a sad parody of unfunny, crass jokes about disabled people and here you are asking for forgiveness for being insensitive. That's the problem with this film. It wants to be everything. Funny and emotional as well. Don't try it, dude, when you don't feel a word of that apology.

Akshay Kumar is as comfortable playing the obnoxious Sandy, which also means he is at his loudest best. Riteish Deshmukh, who usually enjoys such roles (and does a good job), seems disinterested, almost wondering how long he will have to repeat this act. Abhishek Bachchan looks jaded. Those cool tattoos fail to hide his fatigue.

Jacqueline, Lisa and Nargis are your quintessential cookie-cutter dimwits, who wear similar clothes in different shades and similar lipsticks in similar shades.

And no. NO. Just NO. Don't, please don't try an arrey-it's-a-masala-film-calm-down-loosen-up' on me. I can't surgically detach my brains and leave them behind when I watch films.

If your idea of humour is red ants crawling over a disabled man's crotch or an old man farting as he mounts a bike or a blind man being asked to jump into a waterless pool, then I have two things for you.

1. You need help.

2. God bless you.

Film: Housefull 3

Director: Sajid and Farhad

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Boman Irani, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Lisa Hayden, Jackie Shroff and Nargis Fakhri

Stars: 3 out of 5

Housefull 3 should ideally come with a blanket announcement: If you are easily offended, Housefull 3 is not for you.

But for all else, the latest Bollywood ensemble comedy " featuring Akshay Kumar, Boman Irani, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Lisa Hayden and Nargis Fakhri " is a romp, an ode to harebrained antics.

It's about three greedy men who hope to strike it lucky in life by marrying wealthy women.

What aids them is that the leggy ladies in question aren't the brightest bulbs in London. Their stilettos and their designer clothes have more personality than they do. But Fernandez, Haydon and Fakhri, as the wily and cute Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati, do a fair job of playing beautiful Barbie-like bimbettes. Though a viewer may not be able to tell these three sisters from each other (characterisation didn't seem like a priority here) they manage to pull of their dim-witted, but dazzling, roles.

Their conservative Gujarati father, played ably by Irani, is under the mistaken impression that his three daughters are conservative Indian girls who will marry men of his choice. The stereotype that equates "good" Indian culture to what they wear (salwar-kameez) and their coy body language (namaste) is shamelessly peddled.

The key to enjoying this film is not to analyse it. If you over-think it, large parts of this film will be downright politically incorrect.

Nobody is spared.

People with handicaps, different races, the rights of domestic help and grim issues such as rape are thrown under the bus.

But Kumar and his boys manage to keep things light by not make it terribly distasteful. The pace isn't sluggish and events unfurl at a quick pace.

New characters are added at random intervals and it's difficult to keep up with them; you may reach a point where you don't care anymore.

While the first half has some laugh-out loud moments, the second half meanders. But the climax, which has some golden moments, wrap things up nicely.

Bachchan plays an aspiring rapper, who isn't particularly good at it. It was heartening to see a comedy that made its heroes indulge in some self-deprecating humour. Deshmukh isn't very convincing as a professional car racer, but fortunately their professions aren't dwelled upon in this film. The tale of three losers with some nifty get-rich-quick-scheme is one of those films that defies logic. As long as you don't look for sense in this one, you are safe.

Housefull 3 Has Decent Start

Housefull 3 had a decent opening 35% at both multiplexes and single screens. The film has probably taken the third best opening of the year in terms of occupancy after Fan and Baaghi with the former being released on a partial holiday. The initial is far better than Akshay Kumar's last release Airlift which took a low opening and progressed well through the day. The release is the widest of the year with it hitting 2500 sites which will be around 3600 plus screens. Fan hit 2350 sites and Baaghi 2000.
The opening is best in the multiplexes of Rajasthan but single screens but the single screens in Rajasthan should have opened better due to the following of Akshay Kumar but maybe the dull performance of Akshay Kumar starrers in these parts since Holiday are taking a toll on the initial. Infact single screens across the board should have opened better.
The film has big expectations and despite the opening being decent its going to be about what happens over the weekend with the key family audience as from this start its hard to see that 20 crore nett number so it has to get there either on Saturday or Sunday with growth.
