I wrote a long ass reply which I lost when the network got disconnected. 😭
Just want to say-everyone is stereotyped. Sodhi and especially Gogi is shown as a idiot. Now that there is a petition in the SC to ban sardar jokes, maybe Maha people can do something similar for the bai portrayal.

Personally I don't think one should lose sleep over it. Bolly and ad agencies and tv industry and all the writers are based in Mumbai. And I reckon this is how the bai think crept into the collective consciousness of all indians. Ramu kaka was a perpetual presence in old Hindi films. But I cannot remember any iconic Hindi movie that had a bai as a centrepiece. There was a Kanta Ben in KHNH in recent times.

I imagine the Bai phenomenon started with a bang with that cartoon of the fat fisherwoman in a Marathi saree saying "Itne paise mein itnaich milenga". Think it was one of those funny shorts in Channel V or something.

IMO it's a minor aberration. Maha is a great place to live I think except for the water woes which have culminated in a full fledged drought now. Mumbai has the lowest crime rate only because of the wonderful, cultured, moral, simple living high thinking Maha people. Just see the crime rate of Delhi.
