The following post consists of my general observations:
I watch this show in middle whenever i get time and catch up with some interesting tracks but I have an observation( i don't know whether post on this topic is made earlier or not) but I just feel sometimes that Jetha's jokes on Bhide are somewhere targeting Maharashtrians.
I know its just a show but it gets repetitive always Jetha has to speak something or the other in against of Bhide its not being funny but its making fun of him.
Only Maharashtrian shown in the show are facing financial instability (usig dialogues like mujhe itneme hi jamega, budget mei rehna chahiye, itna hi parvadega etc..) are commonly used by bhide couple.
Plus it just doesn't stop over here they show bhide either getting beaten,or dreaming that bhide got black colour on his face -i guess khote classes track(showing that its funny which is not)
Even Taarak doesn't stop him on the contrary joins him ,when someone makes fun of Jetha Taarak always comes in front as a chamcha and if its bhide or iyer for that matter taarak joins the club.
Somewhere either writer,or producer or director is trying to show that Maharashtrians are less, always thinking about money(btw this thing applies to all caste people and its practical),husbands if they are helping their wife for bringing their saree so they are lady like
They drag Bhide unnecessarily in any sort of controversies atleast for once where he HAS to get insulted always most of the time by Jetha or by whoever is shown society members's enemy.
They show him like he lacks personality of a "MAN" .
I think somewhere its also same for Iyer after all he is also a Maharashtrian in real life.
Seems like Producer/Director/Writer has some special grudge against Maharashtrians where he have shown these two people as member of society with a respectable position but they are always made fun of on the name that something funny is happening.
P.S.- this is my general observation which go on in most of the tracks where Jetha is shown absolutely wrong but still just because he is the hero he is SHOWN right and funny.
I am not being biased to any particular caste but just tired of these monotonous gags which spoil the entertaining part. They should try something different now.😊

Hey guys. With all due respect, I don't think Asit or the TMKOC writers are biased against any one particular caste.

  • Bhide isn't financially unstable, he's "kangoos" or cheap. Often, Madhavi is shown to go shopping with the other ladies and even Sonu has a computer and stuff like the other kids.
  • As far as making fun of Bhide goes, Jetha does like to assert his authority and bully others. And of course, Tarak joins him. But, Jetha does that to all of his friends. Often times at the soda shop, jetha and bhide gang up on Popat and make fun of his bachelorhood. Jetha even cracks some jokes to Bhide exclusively in Marathi. Sometimes, Jetha's Marathi dialogues are pretty funny too.
  • As far Bhide's doing feminine things is concerned and the men dragging him into the conversation, I think it's the way the character is crafted.
  • Bhide is meant to be this nerdy, strict teacher who in his surge of self righteousness goes too far. His "siddhanth" don't allow him to do some of the stuff the other men do. On the other hand, Madhavi is shown as a very independent Maharastrian woman with her own business and she even helps her husband run the house.

Daya, on the other hand and even Bapuji, Jetha and Tapu, are shown as being stupid in terms of education. That's a negative label the writers have attached to Gujaratis, which is not necessarily true.

I think the writers originally picked certain characters to have certain traits and then exaggerated them so much over the years that it has now become overdone and may seem offensive. But, no, I respectfully disagree that TMKOC is offensive to Maharastrians.

Love,
blahblahs.

thanks for the reply.😊
i agree with your first point that yes he is shown kanjoos but he has the same facilities as other people have, also i feel Madhavi's business is shown of a little low level ,they could show her boutique or a catering business.
i partially agree with you that yes Jetha makes fun of his all friends too but rarely and also they show rarely jetha making fun of taarak ,even he says about karela juice to taarak its alone but when it comes to Bhide they show public humiliation where Bhide is unanswerable (since so many years).
For eg:When Jetha points about Bhide ironing Madhavi's saree ,Bhide can also say that how you are super scared of your Bapuji but he doesn't as then Jetha won't win in the samll argument.
Yes i agree sometimes his humare zamaane mei and siddhanth are too much but that is also stopped many times showing that its boring or time consuming but that doesn't happen when daya says" hey maa mataji" or bapuji's "babuchak" or Jetha's "non sense".
They show Bhide boring when he talks about sankaar but a person like bapuji is shown knowledgable where he actually scolds Jetha anytime, calls Taarak as mehta sahab and Professor Bhide as Bhindimaster ,and whole Gada family talks about sankaar where we all know tapu being a nuisance towards the society and Jetha flirting with Babita and these people call it sankaar.😆
This is the same bapuji who inspired tapu to collect money from the card game of people(initial episodes) for Ganesh Chaturthi chanda and he is shown adarshwadi.
About the last point i couldn't agree more they are exagerating the traits taken long time back time to update now.
P.S.-i like the way you have analysed every situation.😊

Not really
Actually, most of the team members are Gujarati and the makers always try to uphold the culture of Gujarat as the best culture in the world. In the process other cultures are by default a little less than the Gujarati culture, be it Maharastrian or any other culture. As a matter of fact no other culture has been discussed much in the show.

Personally, I find the Bhide couple as the most realistic couple of the society. THeir problems, financial issues and their way to enjoy the little things of life is very realistic unlike the other couples of the society.

I agree with blahblahs about the Gujaratis. The way the Gujaratis have been show is unbelievably stupid. The idea is to revolve the show around the Gadas and therefore Bhide cannot earn more than Jetha because Bhide is an adarshwadi teacher. Jetha has to be the richest man around. Although they have killed the orginal concept but Bhide was always the person who had prejudices against the Gada family. He took pride on being an educated man unlike Jetha .Jetha was a person who liked bullying people whom he didn't like because he could not do the same at his own home.

About ironing clothes or doing other household chores its a matter of choice. We have discussed about the show being regressive in these matters. We have also discussed how the Gada family will expect Daya to hand them a glass of water and how evidently the women take it as their duty to do so. Jetha will need Daya to get him his towel. Every man in fact should at least do the basic things in the house like Bhide which the show fails to portray properly.

He doesn't and cannot humiliate Tarak because Tarak is his fire brigade. Jetha needs him and also Mehta is friendly with everyone. You do not tease someone who cannot be teased. Apparently, Jetha doesn't bully Sodhi or Hathi for the same reason.

We have from time to time discussed the hypocrisy of the characters and the show makers. Bapuji's character is an epitome of hypocrisy.

I don't think so.In fact,I feel that after Gujarati culture, the only culture they value is the Maharashtrian culture. They has made quite a few tracks on Gudi padva. They celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in somewhat Maharashtrian style with all the gents and ladies wearing Maharashtrian clothes.
Regarding Bhide,it's a part of his character. I don't think they are trying to show that all Maharashtrian men are kanjoos, etc.,etc.,etc.He is shown to be earning less than other GD wasis even though he's highly qualified. They could have showed him working in a school and earning well but God knows why they didn't do it.Ulta they made him the society's secretary because 'he doesn't do much work like others '.But than also that doesn't mean all maharashtrians are like that. Bhide spends less on his family because he is middle class but he spends lavishly on parties and functions in the society.

Madhavi is financially independent but she is still dependent on bhide for everything. She only gives her views and opinions but at the end of the day,Bhide makes all the decisions of their family and Madhavi has to accept them even if she doesn't like them.

Bhide is not kanjoos, but he is spends money cautiously. Still he is not as impossible as Popatlal. He has been shown to spend money on buying outside food like Sunday misal or having good time with Family.

There are always perceptions about certain communities like Gujaratis are good at business but are less interested in higher education and vice versa with Maharashtrians. Punjabis are loud and South Indians excel in education. How relevant is all this in today's times ? But all this is shown on Tv shows.

Don't look for any deep research in this show. According to them Bengalis eat rasgollas day in and out and tamilians are all about aiyayyo and idli dosa. All subjiwalis in a city like Mumbai are nine yard saree wearing Marathi women who will wear nath every day. Sardars is have to act OTT. All the characters here are caricature.

However I do feel Bhide is given more prominence because of actor Mandar. He is one of the best actors and his comic timing with Dilip Joshi is outstanding. His expressions are awesome and even after all these years still has something new to offer in expressions. Hence he obviously gets more variety in scenes. We have already seen what a bad actor Tanuj M is and even other actors like Hathi or Sodhi are limited actors.
But sometimes they do go overboard in criticizing and insulting and I cringe too at times.

Since we are on this topic, has anyone noticed one thing in those swatchh bharat awards which are given once in a while in tmkoc? All these awards are given to people/workers/associations from Gujarat state only. Once I did see someone from Mumbai but again the people involved were Gujaratis.

Interesting, isn't it ? Does it mean that rest of India is not interested in swatchhta?
