I don't know how Asit Modi feels about Maharashtrians but I've noticed that Maharashtrians get quite touchy about the way they're represented anywhere.
Bhide is shown as a law-abiding, righteous, idealistic character who looked down on the Gada family from the start of the show. Because he felt that these Gujarati Gadas are ill-educated to illiterate. I also feel Bhide felt that despite being better educated and better mannered than them, they're financially stronger than him. Perhaps he felt that they did not deserve this.

Jethalal is shown as a bully who always picks on Bhide because of this. Bhide is a bit of a pushover also if you notice. Popatlal is made fun of by all the society members and yet he's also able to bully Bhide.

So Bhide is just the way the character is written. It's in no way a statement on all Maharashtrians. So please don't take my opening line as offensive. It's just something I've noticed on social media.

If we really go into the nitty gritties of the show, it will give us a headache. Because in this show, the Gujaratis are shown as the best, richest, confident and most intelligent couple who might not be educated yet they somehow have some earth wisdom which wins over one and all (Sic).

IMO Jetha is a big bully but Popatlal is even worse. At least, Jetha does it for fun as Bhide gives a hard time to Tapu. Though Tapu really needs to be restrained.
Popatlal gives him a very difficult time even though Bhide never had anything against him. One of these days, I wish Bhide would stand up for himself and give Popu a tight slap when he's harrassing him.

I have not watched this show since the babita-iyer track started.Is popat bullying Bhide in any recent episode?I always feel that popat is bullied more than bhide.All the gents of the society including bhide make fun of Popat because all his attempts to get married are failing.Sometimes they become too insensitive and cross the line in 'pulling his leg'.They don't even realize that the poor guy has no family and is getting old so obviously he will be desperate.Popat does get angry and shouts at them but later he forgets everything.

@Subha
I like Popat and he's a good actor. Yes, of course poor guy. I really want to see him married now for reals.
But he does bully Bhide a lot and I hate bullies, period. Just yesterday, he wasn't letting Bhide leave the society w/o telling him where he was going when Bhide had to dleiver SOnu's stuff at the station. And he always blames Bhide for anything that goes wrong in the society which others don't so much.

the issue is monotony - they always show tappu and jetha first inviting trouble then when they want to take out their bhadaas they target bhide or iyer(popat is only taunted for being unmarried,negativity, and being kanjoos) but bhide is targeted overall.
Even Champak the so called adarshwadi doesn't stop jetha or tappu from insulting bhide on the contrary supports them or becomes quiet and bhide is usually a very centered character who likes to be educationally updated(only in terms of education) and likes to help madhavi and likes to be secretary,jetha and tappu get some sadistic pleasure and do some prank and laugh at him loud and this is happening since so many years!time for a change tmkoc

I am just referring to your first line. I really appreciate the manner in which you have put your thoughts and I hope I am able to explain my point of view well.

As you said Maharashtrians get touchy, don't you think it applies to everyone nowadays. Every community gets hurt if they feel some things are shown to degrade them. And especially nowadays everyone is too sensitive . Even in movies if they Show something, immediately protests starts. It has become so common now. Just other day I saw that nurses were offended by their portrayal in Kapil Sharma show. So you can't say only maharashtrians are touchy. But yes I do agree that the ' Marathi asmita' is huge.

I for one can't understand why mostly maids in shows are shown as 'bai' which has become the standard word for maids. Do the rest of India call their domestic helpers as bai ? Aren't there Ramu Kakas anymore ? There are definitely bai in Maharashtra but in a city like Mumbai people from all over India work as domestic help. So why just maharashtrians are shown as domestic help.

You can say I am being touchy about this and I do admit it bothers me. Because the bai role is for laughs and also ridicule. Aren't servants in rest of India same way as any bai here ? Are they more punctual and hard working ? Hence I guess it becomes a little insulting.

As far as Bhide is concerned I also feel he is a punching bag for everyone. He is blamed for every single thing that goes wrong in the society. But as you mentioned it's just a character and not because he is Marathi. In fact Madhavi is liked by everyone in the society and is shown as a sensible sweet lady.

@Aarti_16 i couldn't agree more
i guess more than being touchy ,i am talking logic over here.
Ok Jetha demeans Iyer(though its not right) but still one can understand its due to Babita angle but why Bhide?
Just because he points out Tappu's mistakes-WHICH IS RIGHT BTW -maybe according to producer tapu sena are still kids but then where is this kiddish behaviour when they organise festivals-they do have basic sense but they do not behave properly with Bhide .Even our parents talk nicely to our teachers no matter even if there had been issues in past its a matter of some grace/dignity(bapuji's adarsh which vanishes when he calls his grandson's teacher as bhindi master).Yes i agree his character is written that way so why teaching(supposed one of the most noble professions in India )is treated so badly.
Yes i know he bores people with his zamana talk but still that doesn't give Jetha (father of Bhide's student) to degrade him saying-yeh to ghar pe hi hai,eh bhide,or tappu tricking bhide into something.
The same Bapuji calls Mehta as mehta sahab,even iyer as iyer,sodhi as sodhi only then why Bhide as Bhindi master?

I agree with Ibnbattuta about the Bhide thing.I also agree with Aarti about being sensitive. Its nor restricted to one religion or caste. It is but applicable to all of us.

Bhide was not really noble or gentle as he is now. So, lets stop calling him a victim to begin with. He did had lot of prejudices against the Gadas. I agree Jetha is a bully .Bhide is probably the most educated one in the society and had an idealistic upbringing. Still he has the least income. On the contrary there is a family like Gadas having all the materialistic happiness in the world without proper education and lacking even the basic etiquette. As per the real writer's characterization Bhide was always very apprehensive about Tappu and SOnu's friendship.If we look closely we can see how his dialogues used to target the whole Gada family and not Jetha alone.

Yes, the GD wasis do blame him for everything and its really annoying but what does it has to do with his Maharastrian ethnicity ? Is it like they want a non-Maharastrian to become a secretary ? They will do the same for any other character. If its against a culture then I can say Jetha is also a victim.

1)Only because a truck had a registration number from Gujarat, Bhide had put all the blame on Jetha. Why ? Because he is a Gujarati.

2) Iyyer had not invited the whole Gada family during Babita Birthday party track. Why sideline a whole family because you don't like Jetha ?

3)Bhide accused Tappu of breaking his glasses without even knowing the truth. In fact Tappu is accused of almost everything because he is son of Jetha. Why it should be taht way when all the children except Gogi are of same age ? Each should take the blame .

4)Bhide accused Jetha of manipulating the price of the product during the computer track. He did it without even knowing the truth. What was the logic ? He is a Gujarati businessman. Since he is a businessman he has no ethics ?

For the sake of discussion, there had been one time characters in the show who were Maharastrian and were much more clever, well established and well settled than Bhide. FOr example : The female civil engineer.

@ Nuckts : Even the original Bapuji was also a problematic person. For this very nature Bapuji and Bhide had a very bad start. This ' Bhindi mastar' is the result of the initial characterisation of both Bapuji and Bhide. They retained it although unecessarily. You forgot that Bapuji calls Mehta has Mehtosh, Hathi has Hathida and Popat as Dibba.
