Gadas are Jains but I thought Jainism is different from Hinduism. So they are not hindus? Are they only regional wise Gujaratis and not caste wise? They even do not consume onions and ginger garlic.

And they are Kutchi too. Kutchi is also a caste I guess or is it also for only the people from Kutch?

Kutchis are people from Kutch.

Jainism remained a part of Hinduism until in 2006 when the Honourable Supreme court declared it as a complete separate religion. I guess Gadas practice both Jainism and Hinduism.There are handsome number of Jains in Gujarat. So, they are both Gujarati and Jains.

Jains in particular don't consume anything that grows below the soil.

Yes that is why I said they are not hindus. They always wanted to separate. So Gadas caste is not Gujju. They are primarily Jains. Asit Modi must be a Jain too.

NO, they are Gujaratis but Jains not Hindus. Like Sodhi is a Punjabi but Sikh and not a Hindu. I am Bengali and a Hindu while there are Bengalis who are Muslims.

One who belongs from Gujarat is a Gujarati. Religion doesn't play a role there because division of states was made on the basis of language and not religion. You will find Jains in Rajasthan or Tamil Nadu also. They accordingly speak their respective languages.

Jainism first of all is a religion of minority and secondly its only a recent development that it has got a separate identity. May be there are families like Gadas who are Jains but who are also very much attached to their Hindu values. I mean Jainism applies some strict rules to its followers. Like speaking truth or non - violence or not acquiring wealth or other materialistic things. Its a religion of purity no doubt there but some people didn't let go their old beliefs but accepted the new one in a better format I guess.

I had History as a subject during my degree exams. We had a whole chapter on ancient religions. I could have discussed more but last time I did it caused unnecessary fights. As I said already my points are not based on the recent developments. Its based on how it was born and how it flourished so far as per recorded in the historical texts. Obviously things change in every religion and Jainism is no different.

I know what you are saying but I thought Gujarati was a caste too. Anyway, thanks for the info. I know things can get really controversial on IF but I don't think there are many people here and I would like to read more.

Gujarati is not a caste, though in India, it is often made out to be for socio-political reasons. But, anybody from Gujarat state is a Gujarati. Usually, anyone who speaks the language Gujarati is considered to be a Gujarati. Jainism is a religion and many people of this religion live in Gujarat, especially the Kutch/Saurastra area.

As far as Asit Modi, to me it seems as if he's of Hindu religion and of Vaishnava caste as he took the whole team to Rajasthan Nathadwara upon completion of 1000 epiosodes or something (I think that was the occasion).

But, credit to TMKOC for respecting all religions and celebrating all the festivals on the show.

Jainism is a separate religion with some common things with Hinduism. I don't think Jains believe in the authority of the vedas or upanishads.

Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world and next oldest is Jainism I think.

But they have some common beliefs like belief in rebirth, cremation, vegetarianism etc although it's taken to the extreme where roots and even onions and garlic are considered tamasic.

There are lot of Jains in Gujarat because it is believed that the 22nd Tirthankara(Jain religion's practitioner & propagator) attained salvation there.

Jainism is a religion and Gujarati is a community.People belonging to Gujarat and speaking Gujarati language are called Gujaratis just like people belonging to West Bengal and speaking Bengali language are called Bengalis,etc.

What is the caste of Bengalis? People say bengali festival, marwari festival, Gujrati festival and gods etc but are not known by caste. That is why I felt Bengali, Gujrati are castes too apart from being regional groups.
