Sairat becomes highest grossing Marathi film

TNN | May 13, 2016, 10.53 AM ISTSairat becomes highest grossing Marathi film
The Marathi film 'Sairat' has continued its golden run into the third week and is breaking records on its way.

The film which collected Rs 25.50 cr in the first week of its release, went on to shatter Marathi BO records with a whopping collection of Rs 41.11 cr at the end of 11 days, according to the entertainment website Bollywood Hungama.

In doing this, the film has surpassed the earnings of 'Natsamrat', 'Lai Bhaari', 'Duniyadari' and 'Balak Palak'. An interesting aspect to note about this collection figure is that it is much more than many Bollywood big ticket releases this year including 'Rocky Handsome' and 'Jai Gangaajal'. Furthermore, this feat has been achieved by the film in much lesser number of screens. While the Bollywood releases were screened across India, 'Sairat' released across Maharashtra and at a few screens in neighbouring states.

The film directed by Nagraj Manjule and featuring Akash Thosar as Parshya andRinku Rajguru as Archi, has been earning rave reviews for its realistic portrayal of a love story and its BO collection has only added to its success. 'Sairat's run at the BO stands to continue for another week due to no Marathi releases. Next week will be a testing time for the film with the Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-Randeep Hooda starrer 'Sarbjit' scheduled to hit screens.

It's like a pattern. Every few years, comes a forbidden teenage love story that becomes a blockbuster and ends up as a rage and cult of sorts. I have observed this in different languages. 😆

Along with raking in the moolah, Nagraj Manjule's 'Sairat' has become the talk ofBollywood biggies. The film, a love story with a background of caste discrimination, has become the highest grossing Marathi film and everyone from Subhash Ghai toAamir Khan is raving about it. 'Sairat' has also earned good reviews from critics.

A few days ago, Aamir tweeted his feelings after watching the film and urged his followers to watch it too.

After Aamir, its the turn of Irrfan to praise the movie. In a recent tweet, the 'Madaari' actor congratulated Nagraj.

Hats off to new face of Indian cinema #Sairat #NagrajManjule. Thats the way to go !! https://t.co/ML0oRzeHn5

You know the power of #Sairat? In all those videos of people dancing in theatres on Zingat, am still looking at the screen showing the film.
