Saawariya copied from Tamil film?

Rumours suggest Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus may not be original

So far most people believed Saawariya was an adaptation of a Dostoevsky's short story White Nights. But there is a possibility that the film has been directly copied from a Tamil film. Jananathan's directorial debut Iyarkai was critically acclaimed and even fetched him a National Award.

Considering the fact that his film was a huge success, Jananathan toyed with the idea of remaking the same film in Hindi. After all, this has become quite an acceptable trend today. A Hindi film producer approached him and said he wanted to watch the movie, with the intention of planning its Hindi remake. Jananathan it seems was only too happy to oblige.

Even before that person gave Jananathan his verdict, he got the news that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Diwali release Saawariya, has copied the basic storyline of Iyarkai. Sources insist Jananathan is quite upset that a director of such stature could have behaved in this fashion. Wonder if he is planning to press charges?

I read the same in rediff.com sometime back. Is it true? Has anyone seen this Tamil film?

It says that this also is based on White Nights so why is director upset with SLB? SLB credited the original source.

so if there was a tamil film like this...den that tamil film was also based on Whites Nights...? if thas the case, then that film isnt original either 😆

I think that may just be the case... We do get to see different adaptations of the same story so many times... 😊

only if the screenplay or plot is exactly the same, can the maker of iyarkai claim that saawariya has been liftend from his film... and since both are based on White NIGHTS there will obviously be so many similarities... oh wake up....

^^May be that director now wants to ride on SLB's success. 😆

"White Nights" is a Russian short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky, originally published in 1848, early in the writer's career. Film adaptations have been made by Italian director Luchino Visconti, by French director Robert Bresson (as Four Nights of a Dreamer) and by Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali (as the musical Saawariya).

the tamil director didnt got recognition here why?

I have watched the tamil movie, its a very beautiful and touching movie. It rightfully won a national award. The director made the movie at a very small budget, no pomp or splendour. I would recommend this movie any day.
