Meher Khanna - Televisionpoint.com | Mangalore Acclaimed Sarod player and composer Ustad Amjad Ali Khan slammed the reality TV shows on music saying "they are highly unreal". Admitting that reality musical shows were entertaining, Khan said: "No doubt it does encourage youngsters and has created musical awareness. But as far as I am concerned, it's unreal. It demeans the relationship between guru and shishya." Khan said in the classical guru-shishya tradition, nobody sings in a standing position before a guru. "You have to be respectful to a guru. The channels are beaming a different kind of message. Are they creating actors, dancers or musicians?" he questioned. Acknowledging that classical music was passing through a difficult phase due to channels, he said it was a great challenge for people to leave their favourite serials and shows and attend a music concert. "Good news is that in spite of the cultural aggression, there are much more younger musicians now," he said, adding the future is bright. He thanked the corporate world for helping the cause of classical music, Indian tradition and culture. His advice to youngsters influenced by the West: "Balance westernization and tradition". Khan said this in the background of his statement that the country was losing its identity "day by day after Independence due to cultural attack and aggression, not from outside but within due to the electronic media". Talking about music, Khan appeared troubled by the thought of synthetic music taking over human touch. "Music with human touch is like healing touch," Khan said, adding he was afraid to visualize a future without musicians with machines producing musical notes. Khan advocated censorship on religious channels as "some channel may say something negative and foment trouble". He also appealed to politicians to leave religion and adopt some other system to garner votes. He also asked the people not to be guided by religious heads. "Go by your own conscience," he advised. http://www.televisionpoint.com/news2007/newsfullstory.php?id =1195565187 |
