'Reality shows are highly unreal' - Ustad Amjad Ali Khan

Tuesday - Nov 20, 2007
Meher Khanna - Televisionpoint.com | Mangalore

Acclaimed Sarod player and composer Ustad Amjad Ali Khan slammed the reality TV shows on music saying "they are highly unreal".

Admitting that reality musical shows were entertaining, Khan said: "No doubt it does encourage youngsters and has created musical awareness. But as far as I am concerned, it's unreal. It demeans the relationship between guru and shishya."

Khan said in the classical guru-shishya tradition, nobody sings in a standing position before a guru. "You have to be respectful to a guru. The channels are beaming a different kind of message. Are they creating actors, dancers or musicians?" he questioned.

Acknowledging that classical music was passing through a difficult phase due to channels, he said it was a great challenge for people to leave their favourite serials and shows and attend a music concert. "Good news is that in spite of the cultural aggression, there are much more younger musicians now," he said, adding the future is bright.

He thanked the corporate world for helping the cause of classical music, Indian tradition and culture. His advice to youngsters influenced by the West: "Balance westernization and tradition". Khan said this in the background of his statement that the country was losing its identity "day by day after Independence due to cultural attack and aggression, not from outside but within due to the electronic media".

Talking about music, Khan appeared troubled by the thought of synthetic music taking over human touch. "Music with human touch is like healing touch," Khan said, adding he was afraid to visualize a future without musicians with machines producing musical notes.

Khan advocated censorship on religious channels as "some channel may say something negative and foment trouble". He also appealed to politicians to leave religion and adopt some other system to garner votes. He also asked the people not to be guided by religious heads. "Go by your own conscience," he advised.

Great article 👏 , I think he is totally right when he says "Are they creating actors, dancers or musicians?" ...that is the thought that is running at the back of my mind too ....most of these ppl participating in these shows will grow up to be so called performers...there are very few who will be good singers and stand the test of time.
And i too feel that classical music is passing thru a tough time due to the non stop aggressive marketing of hindi film songs by channels.I love classical music. Is there a single channel,a single show which airs good classical music(either competitions/concerts).....I think they are really few and far between...and most of them are aired late night(as if it was an adults show or something 😆 ) which is ridiculous.Sonu alos mentioned that classical music needs o be marketed and he was so right.Otherwise the next generation will not know wht classical music is and the best form of music produced by India will die by giving way to its poor cousin(bollywood music) 😊

Abhijeet Sawant is now making his acting debut in a film and he will do the playback for it with Sunidhi and Shreya.
Just make you wonder what these reality shows are trying to dicover...singers or actors?

But also do note few like Nihira and Hemchandra too who hope all remember came from these very reality shows. They are into singing and still doing so really good. Hemchandra's new album is out and next would be soon too. Yes the percentage of success as singers is less but to say zero would be unfair too.

So if he does playback too then logically he will be a singer too. Just few days back he launched his album too.

I think the unreal atmosphere comes from the eliminations. An atmosphere is created that the loser will have to pack up his bags and leave, and some sad music is played when the loser is crying and giving his thank you speech. At times even an impression of death is created! Like when Adi said "Ab inki awaaz humaare beech nahin hogi" or some such nonsense.

All manufactured emotions!

Ustadji is right, but then without reality shows there is no Saregamapa or SVOI and other programmes. These have been providing a platform to launch new careers too.
Agreed this is all commercialisation and profiteering which does detract serious music.

All I am asking for is to cut the crap and make the shows more relevant to an intelligent audience. We don't want the stupid sounds of artificial thunder when two characters in the show disagree with each other or wailing background music when a contestant is eliminated.

Thanx for the article Kumar...true these shows hv turned more commercial. But while they form a really good platform for many to show case their talents, they can at the most make sure to keep the drama part away from it. At times as Sahana said it becomes very artificial and does not somehow go well with the show....the music part gets overshadowed due to these gimmicks.
